I was about to ask tourists who were by the volcano yesterday to check their photo's for a lost person since the police was asking for every possible bit of information in tonight's new, but as I was finishing my points for the video, the man was found. So we can all learn from this, hopefully.
Some of the volcano footage is from RUV TV News June 26th

We traveled through Iceland by 4x4 and tent ten times, beginning 1984. It changed a lot, becoming more civilized and comfortable. Fortunately we never needed any assistance, but it was always a good feeling, that there was help at hand if needed. Thanks a lot and the best for all of you from Germany.

Two hundred people searching for the man, no resources spared. Thinking about that gives me a great joy how the community joins together seeking the well being of a stranger. Im specially sensitive to this kind of stories because in my personal life I have been wronged and mistreated, so I love to know that there is good people out there and I hope one day the good people help me.

Maybe he was trying to get HER lost and it backfired! Wonder if he took out a generous insurance policy for her before going to Iceland. I'm not going to be cynical though and I'm sure this was the worst 28 hours for both of them that must have been a stark reminder of how precious their love for one another is, and an absolute relief to be reunited after those harrowing hours. Thats a gift that you cant buy, thanks to the wonderful efforts of the rescue teams.

I'm sure his wife was pretty pissed at him for being a dumb ass, and unnecessarily putting her through all that worry and anguish. "Honey, I know you want to go to the volcano, and try to make a YT video of you walking on lava, but that's something only idiots with shit for brains do." "Next time you try a stunt like that, let me know ahead of time, so I can divorce your dumb ass, and not have to worry if you fall in the lava."

And maybe there was no more phone coverage where they found him - or the battery of his phone was empty. So maybe he could not even phone someone to tell the rescue people his location. A good power bank in the backpack with a charging cable for his phone would be a great idea, so he could try different options and try to find his way back (with GPS and Google Maps if he knew where he started his tour - if GPS is good enough, you mentioned it, that it might not be good in these higher latitudes far from the equator). When the sun never sets, it might really be confusing to find out where north is... (Well, when it's close to the horizon, this might be north... Oh yes - and there was thick fog... Some navigation options just got lost in the fog...)

Good to know! There were all kinds of stories running rampant all conflicting each other. Some said it was a hoax, others did not know. So good to know that someone actually did get lost and that he was found. Those videos of people walking on the lava this past week certainly lends itself to someone falling into lava and being lost. I knew in time we would get the real story and certainly find anyone who was lost. There are too many people there to be lost but in that fog and poor weather yesterday, it would have been so simple to happen considering the number of people and opportunities for someone to become separated quite easily.

Thank you for the news - and a very informative video. I always say “hi” to rescue volunteers - not because they might save my life one day, but because they risk their lives every time they are in a rescue. If they are not risking their lives, their work can involve lots of waiting - so say “hi” next time you see them out & about.

People with no experiece of hillwalking don't realise, that when you go into wild country, you need proper preparation . Even if there are plenty of people around, it is easy to get lost, particularly if the weather changes. There are always unthinking people around the place, who cost rescuers time and money. Anyway it is good to see there was a happy end to the story!

@@Rep0007 I don't know all the detail, but fog is very disorientating. I have done a fair bit of hill walking,in fog and even though your head thinks you are going one direction, the compass will tell you a very different direction. If the lava flow was a straight line, I don't think there would be a problem but looking at the videos, it spreads all over the place.

Found is the best outcome when searching for someone lost... I always enjoy your videos. You are friendly and welcoming. You are also very straightforward in getting an important fact expressed. Sometimes important related to Iceland. Other times just simple logic paired with common courtesy 🙄 (which to me is funny) because people SHOULD know this stuff, worldwide. But you break it down so politely leaving nothing to question. It makes me think you've been confronted with these very people, more than once even. LOL you manage to get important points shared in an ambassadors fashion. I loved your video of things not to do if I ever visit Iceland. Great work, my hubby watched with me & we cracked up at some of the things you mentioned. Thanx for bringing a bit of Iceland to NCalifornia.

Thank God and your fine people the man was rescued alive. You have lots of tourists and I hope there won't be an upswing of the COVID variant in your country. I also hope this volcano will come to an end. How it changed the landscape! Amazing...and in or lifetime. It started so innocently a few weeks ago and now it changed part of Iceland forever and it may keep on doing that and change part of the shoreline. People are very kind and many were looking for the man. Everyone was glad nothing happened to him. You are right when you wrote "...the man was found. So we can learn from this," I will be totally honest with you concerning this and I will not sugar coat it! Yes, some of us can learn a very important lesson: Not to be stupid in a landscape we are not familiar with and especially where a volcano spews forth fire and lava . I... knew that already, therefor I would not get lost! I guess I could be a bit kinder also and call this poor man "adventurous" instead ... :)

Let this be a good lesson to us all: Wear bright- colored jacket and hat. Bright colors are easier to see from the air. Do not ever go out for a day hike without emergency gear for an unexpected overnight and very severe weather with extra food and water. Take serious shelter for high winds, pouring rain, and possible snow. You never know when you might need it, and if you don't, well, you were prepared to rescue yourself or another.

I'm wondering if search drones wouldn't have made short work of locating the missing tourist? Drones work best when visibility is good and this wasn't the case. At least, a suggestion to wear bright yellow vest or other easily-spotted colored piece of apparel would have shortened the search. Those with cell phones can call for help. I've been an outdoor photographer for over 50 years and usually am alone on the mountain or in the forest or desert and yet haven't needed a phone, but my luck may run out someday. Iceland folks are friendly and resourceful, fortunately. My late wife, Kari, and my son have that strong Viking blood, too.

So happy this ended well. We have Search and Rescue teams in our mountains too. In the summer, lost (usually) tourists are often not prepared for cold or even snowy nights on the mountains. Hyperthermia is the biggest danger.

One of the few tourists without a mobile phone...
@earthalydelights

I think that no matter where they're from in the world, large numbers of the urban middle classes who can afford to indulge themselves in overseas tourism on a whim have no clue what sort of hazards they face when they get to their destinations. I'm living in Australia and there are so many incidents of near drownings, getting lost in remote areas, swimming near crocodiles or in shark infested waters on unpatrolled beaches, being unprepared for the climate and the arid conditions. They happen repeatedly every year from just the same sort of tourists. Apparently the concept of learning something about a place before you get there is anathema to some people and there is no sense of responsibility about how much you might cost the emergency services in the places you visit should it all go tits up.
@vk2ig
@vk2ig 3 жыл бұрын
I hear you! It's sad the number of accidents (some tragic) that visitors to Australia are involved in. And in some cases this is despite signage, warnings from locals, etc. A similar thing happens to Australians in NZ - every year at least one of them needs to be rescued from the mountains on the South Island.
@earthalydelights
@earthalydelights 3 жыл бұрын
@@vk2ig And I know from speaking to Canadian friends that the rescue people there save about half a dozen Aussies a week from hypothermia between November and March every year. The British can get themselves killed in a picturesque natural setting in just about any country they set foot in. Actually a young Scots bloke literally bumped into me in a pub doorway in Bondi many years ago and I had to escort him to a local medical centre. He failed to recognise the clear signs of sunstroke he was displaying. He'd got off the plane 8 hours earlier, dropped his bags at the backpackers' hostel he was staying in and hit the beach. No sunscreen, no hat, no thought of seeking shade. Fell asleep on the sand. He was the colour of a ripe persimmon and his eyes were beginning to roll back in his head. He'd come in the pub after waking up on the beach thinking he was a bit hot and bothered. He assumed a beer might make him feel better ffs!!

I glad they found him. I was imagining a situation that presumed he had ventured out on the lava field and disappeared in to a lava tube, never to be seen again. I'm sure that was a scenario that rescuers considered too. That would have been tragic as his family would never have known for sure! Massive kudos to Icelandic rescue teams who didnt give up. Happy out come. Just be aware, when people stray off the path in fog here in the uk, they can turn in to werewolves.
