Yorktown was the star of the class in the early days of the war. The feat of getting patched up after Coral Sea and sent to Midway in less than a month was an amazing feat for the repair teams onboard and at Pearl Harbor. But Midway ended her bright service. Enterprise goes on to be the USN's most decorated ship. A spectacular wartime service and at one point, the Americans' only CV in the war. Unless there's a major war on the scale of a world war, which I pray to God never happens, this isn't going to be topped by any ship in the USN. "Enterprise vs Japan" wasn't a boast lol

I love how different naval histories go back and forth on the U.S. carriers and how they placed there Armor/Strength deck below the hanger deck rather then above. While this arrangement created problem, it also created two major advantages. First the ship had a lower center of gravity, make then far more stable then the carriers of other nations. Two, the wood deck of the flight deck was easier and faster to repair. At the battle of Midway, after being hit two two bombs, the Yorktown was able to have it flight deck repair and was again operating planes when the 2nd wave of Japanese fighters came in. Because of this the Japanese though seh was Enterprise and attack her again. The fact that is took five Strikes (counting, Battle of the Coral Sea, 2 at Midway, one from a sub the next day, and finally a series of accidental depth charges) to sink her, says a lot about the design.

It's cool how after WW2 the 3 sister ships were either scrapped or sunk that today those same 3 ships have been reborn and modernize

A little tidbit for you about the battle of Midway. Prior to the battle the American code breakers were intercepting messages about the up coming attack but were not sure of the target of that attack. They thought it might be Midway, but to find out for sure, had a message sent from Midway that the Island was low on fresh water. Soon after they intercepted a coded message between the Japanese military that the target of the attack was low on fresh water, thus verifying Midway as the target and the Japanese code name for the Island.

Yeah the Japanese used the code AF for Midway. The code breakers used the water problem message to draw the Japanese to send AF has water problem. Amazing bit of intelligence deception :P

arguably the greatest fighting ship in history, almost single-handedly held off the japanese in the pacific at one point, and at the end of the war all they could do was scrap her. i almost cried when i read that. if any ship deserved to be maintained forever alongside the USS Constitution, it should've been Enterprise.

***** I totally agree, I would much rather see the Enterprise than ships like the Intrepid...

But at least the name of Enterprise carries on and it still shows the might of the US Navy. Usually, when the ship is scrapped or destroyed, the name hardly passed on to the next class of ships. Also, any ships that still exist, either in active/inactive service or as a museum, the name cannot be carried to the next class of ships. To me, either the ship is preserved as a museum or it is passed on to preserved the name, both is a good thing.
