What i really love about Ichigo's power is that his strength comes from the state of his heart and soul. People not paying much attention would've called "Ichigo suddenly stopping Grimmjow's hand without even looking" as an asspull but if you really think about it, Ichigo was always stronger than Grimmjow in this fight. In the beginning when Ichigo saw that Orihime was afraid of him, he subconsciously held back and so the fight was kinda evenly matched. Then when Grimmjow taunted him about not wanting a boring fight, Ichigo got riled up for a brief moment to the point where he overpowered Grimmjow a little bit and even slashed his chest. Then the fight got even again as Ichigo tried to subconsciously hold himself back once more out of fear. And lastly when Ichigo took those hits for them, Orihime got a good look at his mask and was visibly frightened by it. This further held back Ichigo which is why he was getting his ass whooped immediately after that. So now when Orihime called out for him, that's when all shackles broke and he wasn't holding back anymore since she basically reassured him that she just don't wanna see him get hurt, which explains why he suddenly got that burst of power to stop Grimmjow. It wasn't an asspull, he always had that strength in him this entire fight, he was just holding back a lot for Orihime's sake. And also partly because he's also afraid of what he'll potentially become if he succumbs to his hollow instincts. It's such a beautifully written fight that speaks about how true strength comes from the heart.

IMO i also think he holds back coz he's scared that what he thinks Orihime's thinking could be true, that he's just a monster inside and he's bound to become one. I guess with great power does come with great responsibilities

That soundtrack when Grimmjow release his zanpakuto, Power to strive, is honestly one of the best in all of Bleach !! It's so glorious...Also his ressurection is top 3 really, both in transformation and design !!

I love this fight so much and it's my 2nd favorite, because of Orihime's involvement. She wasn't for a single moment a distraction, but a "boost" for Ichigo the moment she said something to him which gave him a sense of "peace of mind" and calmed him down and his emotions for his power to level out slightly, which you almost NEVER see anybody do with a heroine and Kubo did it BEAUTIFULLY. It also speaks VOLUMES about their relationship as well, and what Orihime means to Ichigo :)

If someone said ichigo won bcoz of plot armor literally havent seen the show Ichigo was holding back the entire fight because of orihime He even said at the beginning of fight to orihime " are u afraid its hard not to be afraid when I look like this " ichigo knew orihime was having flashbacks of her dead brother who became hollow after his death and tried to kill her afterwards and basically killed her removed her soul from her body after seeing ichigo hollowfication and orihime have such a traumatic past And ichigo was on defense because grimmjow triggered orihime 2 times in the fight once he fired a gran rey cero at her and second he shot 6 gaja de pantera at her and ichigo have to take the shots and gran rey cero head on The words of orihime made ichigo snap out When she said dont get hurt And remember ichigo performance in battle heavily depends on his mental State...

I don't think Ichigo was really "holding back", i just think that because of what Orihime said he got kind of a burst of adrenaline/power to surpass his limits and win the fight. From what i saw from this fight, Ichigo with the mask was always basically one step behind Grimmjow's release form, even if he didn't have to protect Orihime.

You can tell the difference in Ichigo’s physical state by his mask. It started to crack on its own, but he was able to restore it, showing that his power was more stable than before. He started taking a beating by Grimmjow and the mask took damage, but remained because it wasn’t breaking due to a limit. He didn’t get a power boost because Orihime cheered him on, but he got nerfed when he saw Orihime afraid of him. He broke free of that when she showed she wasn’t afraid anymore.

Orihime reaction to Ichigo is because of how strong and dark the spiritual pressure is as how Halibel described of being that of an Espada And her experience with her brother being a Hollow and unable to keep his sanity and became someone different And that Ichigo simply just wanted to fight these strong people which honestly isn't wrong. Ichigo does want to fight them All of these is what made her felt fear

[Tidbits & Clarifications] - You may have forgotten but early in Bleach we learned that coming close to death increases a characters strength, and Ichigo got VERY close to death here - Ichigo's reaction to Orihime being afraid of him is very important, Ichigo at his core fights to protect, and a shinigami's state of mind affects their Zanpaktou, It's not good if Ichigo is fighting in a state where he feels he's affecting his loved ones in a negative way. That's why when Orihime chooses to cheer him on it's so important, in the moment he not only stops feeling as if he's burderning his precious friend but he also reaffirms his main purpose, which would put his mind and soul at ease (which again is very important for Shinigami because it affects their Zanpaktou) - The cool part about Arrancars Releasing is that it gives extra context about what they symbolize, that's why grimmjow acts in the way he does because his characteristics are symbolic of a panther on the hunt. This is done with all the Espada by the way. - The line is a very important Line for this arc: "It's almost as if I'm watching a battle between Espada" This line is supposed to pair perfectly with the line grimmjow said: "you came to fight" Ichigo began the arc being afraid of and in opposition to everything about his hollow parts...but he continually relies on it to improve and advance forward, he even accidentally admits to wanting to fight Grimmjow at full power, this means that Ichigo fights for more than just protecting. - Another aspect that is often forgotten by this part is that when Ulquiorra 1st met Ichigo he told us that Ichigo Spiritual Pressure when at it's highest is higher than his but it fluctuates. This means Ichigo already has the potential energy needed to defeat #4, he just doesn't have the skill or experience, but since he's been fighting he's getting closer.

If you remember when Ichigo first gained control of his mask, his hollow lectured him about instinct. I think it's just implied that his mask starts to stay on because Grimmjow is his proper rival. It's not a battle of saving Orihime, it's a battle of pure instinct.

One detail that it seems you guys didn't know or forgot is that Soul reapers are like Saiyans so, when they're close to death they get a boost. In Ulquiorra's encounter Ichigo nearly died so that's why he leveled up. plus another cool thing that will be explain in up-coming episodes. Can't wait for you guys to catch up with current season.. the animation? Demon slayer quality for a slight reference. Brian you were right in the last part of the vid, ichigo's power are heavily based on his emotions, Remember the 'I hate the rain' talk with Old man Zangetsu.
