History and Release. In March 1975 the single became Newton-John's second consecutive number one hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, although it stayed in the top chart position for just one week. The record also received a Grammy nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. The song also topped the Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Singles chart and - in her continued success as a crossover artist - peaked at No. 3 on the Hot Country Singles chart.
In the United States, it was Newton-John's fourth straight single to be certified gold for sales of one million copies. "Have You Never Been Mellow" also reached number one in Canada and peaked at number 10 in Australia and number 26 in Japan, but was not much of a success elsewhere in the world, failing to chart altogether in the United Kingdom.
Cover Versions.
The song is being performed as part of the 2007 Broadway musical Xanadu. Along with her later single Xanadu, a remixed version by "The Olivia Project" appears in the Dance Dance Revolution series of video games. The Dutch band Party Animals sampled the song in 1996 on their hit "Have You Ever Been Mellow". The song reached No. 1 on the Netherlands singles chart.

I'm heartbroken. R.I.P. Olivia Newton John. I haven't felt this sad since my father passed. Anyone my age or a bit older will understand. Olivia Newton John was one of a kind. Tonight I'll say a prayer for you, and thank god for blessing us all with your lovelyness and unforgettable talent.

@@007ndc She definitely was every young guy’s dream lady of our age. And note how classy she always was. She didn’t exploit sexuality like Madonna did (and still tries to do). And unlike Madonna, ONJ had genuine musical talent.

***** the problem is that many of these "sexual" women are not particularly talented. (The same applies to the male singers.) A little subtlety is a very sexy thing. It's a sign of intelligence as well which makes it all the more appealing. The overtly sexual nature of a lot of these people is just tiresome and pathetic.

This video is a real treasure. ONJ, the real deal, live, no lip-sync, pure vocal live and the way it should be. Listen for the little 'imperfections' which make it authentic and genuine as she works the vocal, the mic, the breath control, there's no hiding behind auto tuning, multi-tracked composite vocals, overdubs, etc.

I saw her in concert in Niagara Falls in 2006 and the guy I paid $100 to for the ticket went up to her after the completion of one of her songs during the show and told her that he was donating the money, on behalf of me, towards her breast cancer research fund. Upon receiving the money, she felt compelled to point me out in the audience to thank me. That is something I will never forget and just speaks to the kind of character she possesses to be so gracious!

I have to agree, though I was born in '81. I have steadily fallen more and more in love with the typical vibe of 70s movies, TV and songs as I've gotten older and - critically - been able to hear more of them on KZbin. The instrumentals and singing on this song are the epitome of that. Wonderfully mellow and tugs at the heart strings.

Some of the most gloriously soaring and sonorous high notes ever hit in any performance full of bittersweet tenderness and emotional resonance that simultaneously stings and soothes the heart strings with a dreamy transcendent beauty that seems unearthly, like a lovely song bird taking flight so high it leaves our sight with a sigh that makes us cry, as the glimpse of ideal beauty disappears into the distance.

Olivia is great and I'm gonna find my Olivia CDs and play them in tribute of a great artiste! I use the word IS and not WAS since I believe the spirit of her and her music is still very much alive. Timeless, to use THAT word!

Kids today need to see this. She actually sang this. No auto-tune, no background vocals. She doesn't need a dozen backup dancers, and she keeps her clothes on. And everyone is memorized by her beauty.......Don't believe me? ask any male over the age of 20...............That is talent. Not like the artists of today.

I'd always listen to ANY programme on 70s pop music (the best music decade ever), on TV or Radio. The 60s and 80s were really good & nostalgic too, but the 70s were brilliant.

Absolutely from a completely different time indeed. Her singing was simply effortless. She opened her mouth and the melody just flowed out of her. She is so very beautiful and an amazing vocalist. I just don't understand most music these days. People did this during a time when they didn't have the tools they have today. Incredible!
