This song brings tears to my eyes. Me and my husband danced to this song back in 1972 when we were 18. He proposed a year later. We spent 31 years together. He was the light of my light, the fire that kept me living. He fathered my children. They were best 31 years of my life I could ever have asked for. Cancer took him early. He only had 50 years...I look back on this song and smile, it represents the life we shared and the years we cherished together. You will forever be in my heart David

So I learned English words from Karen, just like a baby learns words from his or her mother. Most Japanese study English so hard, not because they are interested in English, but because they just want to go to a named university to earn fame and money. So I regret that we Japanese stop learning English after entrance exams. But I keep listening to Western music, singing along with Karen, and learning English. I have to be grateful to Western Music. The first Carpenters song I heard of was “For All We Know”, in 1970, as I followed the weekly newspaper Top 20 hits. One of the number one hits was “Knock Three Times” by Dawn. “For All We Know” was released after “Close to You” and “We’ve only just Begun”. So I wasn’t too far behind from the time The Carpenters became famous. The Beatles were way ahead of my time with their number one hits in 1964. Somehow I followed songs into the 1980s and 1990s. I got disengaged from rock and roll after the turn of the century. So Taylor Swift doesn’t mean much to me.

One New Years Day, many decades ago I went to Forrest Lawn In Cypress Gardens. I visited Ms. Carpenter`s Tomb. " A star on earth a star in heaven" was engraved into the marble. I went out to leave just as a lone car pulls up. Out stepped who I thought looked like Richard Carpenter right away because of the build, jeans and white T shirt he often favored. But I was not sure. He went around to open the passenger door and two old people got out of the car. The old man was wearing a blue windbreaker. When he turned his back to me, it read The Carpenters. Then I knew. Mom, Dad and brother came on New Year`s Day, for Karen. I will never forget that moment. I was the only other person there and just left Ms. Carpenter. I wanted to say something nice to them, but I kept silent. Because it was so moving to just witness. Her rare talent is, A Star Forever. Thank you Carpenter`s.

Matt, that is the original recording, at that time on TV it was all lip synced. Unless you thought those guitars worked without cords, or the boom mounted mikes of the era had blue tooth?

That is definitely not pre-recorded as some people suggested here. Come on, just judge by your instincts. The way her lips moved, how the voice sounded. And the genuine reaction she gave at 0:05 mark when her partner played the wrong note.

If Only... I think Karen realized how much she was loved & revered in the Industry. There was no shortage of proof there, ever! What mattered was her mother's opinion of & how she regarded Karen. Always putting Rich high on pedestal, NEVER showing love or appreciation for her daughher & treating her like a so-so band member, rather than a daughter.

She's one of the very few female artists who don't need to spend millions on clothing, equipment or dozen dancers moving around, not to mention showing more skin than needed (this is common in nowadays singers)-all she needed to do is just to sing to impress the audiences. And It's amazingly entertaining. Even love songs don't come out too cheesy out of her, rather pure and emotionall, soft, gentle with that smooth velvety voice. Ah,I might add her to my favorite list even though I hardly listen to female singers.

Me in 2022, I have all their albums and CD’s now from the cloud. Funny story, way back when in the 70’s my grandmother wanted to go to the mall. She said since you took me I will buy you an album. When we got home she said I want to hear the music. The Carpenters album Close to you is what I picked. When she hear the first song. She wanted to hear the total album as all her other grand children were rock and roll. I was blessed.
