The backseat gaming stuff is mad frustrating because people are *mean* about it. They treat it as though you're doing something morally reprehensible by not playing optimally. It took me a while to get over people doing that, and when people get too snide about it on livestreams I have a tendency to block them lol. Anyway, totally on your side on that front, it's mad frustrating to deal with. Like it's just a game, y'all, chill out.

Yeah mean is the right word. Some people just can’t handle other people making their own fun or just not caring about being the best (at something that doesn’t matter! That’s the best thing about games!). I just don’t get the anger..!

@@icklenellierose I remember Matt Mercer sumarising that mentality very well one time (with regards to fears of how people would receive Critical Role): "Your fun is wrong". If you NEED to do anything for money, you will come to dislike it. The fantasy of "Find something that you love, take it as a job, and you will never work a day in your life" is long gone. And just to be clear, that means you should find a job you love and enjoy. But unless you have some 50k stored away and your main source of income is what you love, the stress of having to perfectly micromanage that in the current market will very like cause a lot of stress, cause burnout, and give you a lot of headache. The social pressure of doing a hobby as your job and having people tell you "perhaps it's not worth doing then" or "maybe you are bad at it" for no goddanm reason other than them believing the only way to make money is to have a 9-5 office job certainly isn't helping. So follow those dreams, but expect a rocky road, and try to have a backup if possible. When your livelihood depends on it, it will suck. At least with this you know what to expect, and have a chance at planning accordingly.
@Martyn_Wolf Жыл бұрын
@@TheRandomYoYo I find it amusing the 4 sentences I wrote, essentially condense the 4 paragraphs you wrote 😂 That's mainly due to people focusing on the money as the end objective to working, rather than the work itself being the reward and the money being a by product instead of the main aim.

As a very small gaming channel who has been posting a video at least every other day since early 2020 you are so correct with your list. I've so often felt that it takes so much time to record, edit and post videos for gaming. I even stream on Twitch and will take those VODs, edit them and post them for additional gaming content and it's so much work. I do it because I enjoy sharing my play through of games, and I have to warn people that I only got into gaming as an adult once I started having enough money to buy consoles, games, gaming subscriptions, etc. Sometimes I get lucky and am able to play a game soon after it's been released (like Stray thanks to having a PlayStation Plus account), but other games I often have to wait for there to be a good sale or it's available through PS+, which means some of these games I'm just getting into, even though others may have grown up with the series, like Kingdom Hearts, Little Nightmares, Resident Evil, etc. and to please be kind while I learn, make mistakes and struggle through the game in my own way unless I ask for help. Thank you for making this video. It shows I'm not alone in feeling the way I have, and I fully respect your decision.

I don't get backseat gaming. For me it's super fun to see someone find out stuff on their own, missing stuff and making mistakes. As that is at least half the fun, learning the game. It reminds me of all the mistakes I make or used to make. And then that moment that might come later when they realise they misse something. We all have been there, we can all have a laugh. I think the outsidextra let's play series simply fits better as there is a lot of banter between for example yourself and Luke. It's what kind of put me off pursuing games journalism as a job. My journalism tutor at college recommended I follow it and I thought as gaming culture was a hobby, it would be the perfect way to blend those skills along with film production. The ideal career, right? Yes but bye-bye to enjoying a game the same way. Ask any journalist "have you played this?" or "did you finish that?" and the answer will probably be no. They don't have time. You don't get to play at your own pace or take it all in because you're dissecting something critically or writing, editing, recording, rushing to meet deadlines, worrying what viewers think etc. I'd hate for my first time with a game I was looking forward to to be for work. Don't get me wrong, it's still a cool job and you get to work with awesome people like the oxtra and oxbox team (I'd love to be part of something like that) but I know from doing book reviews, you can't just kick back and read. You have to keep stopping to proof read and take notes and rush to finish it in time to write up and edit a review. Then when you're asked "what did you think?" you can only think of the work you had to do.

I feel your pain. Being the FF/JRPG fanboy that I am I've always loved HCBaily's legendary walkthrough style LPs. I once tried to post a little LP project myself. At least twice. Every time it fell flat. It is so challenging to skate around potential technical issues, play acceptably while still attempting to provide engaging and productive commentary and simply committing to something that is honestly more work than it seems. This was all without high production value or a camera feed so respect for even getting through one. Respect for those who have consistently put out quality LPs, especially walkthrough style ones. The aforementioned HCBaily in particular who's been at it for years and allways does test runs first and keeps notes at hand without skipping a beat while recording. If it's not work you do it for you and no one else. Your enjoyment is what matters most and if others are also entertained that's a bonus. I hope it doesn't come across patronising to be corny and say "You go girl!" Apologies. I'm extremely tired and posting this before I hopefully pass out for the night.

At least a few of the issues in this video is part of why my first attempt at starting streaming ended after a few months. Dealing with the tech and the viewers and needing to be "on" even when I wasn't feeling it was sucking the fun out of the thing I would do to recover from everything else in life that day. Finally decided that I was going to lose my mind if I kept it up. Might circle back around some day if I can find a different/better way to approach it for myself, but it wasn't worth the effort or what I was putting myself through to do it.

Lucy Liu is great in it, and I loved the new approach of not making characters like Marcus and Capt. Gregson idiots just to make Holmes appear smarter by comparison.

I think you're right about it not being algorithm friendly. I wanted to watch, but after the first episode, KZbin stopped giving me notifications, and then I forgot. Might go back and watch the rest now.

Same be ause I don't typically watch let's plays KZbin just stopped pushing me Ellen's videos. For such a smart algorithm, it's pretty fucking stupid. Lol

I can appreciate that, the editing time alone must be bonkers! Considering the fact that I generally say absolutely nothing I would want anyone to hear (I swear A LOT when things go pear shaped) while playing a game that portion of it alone would break me. I've seen folks do it with game footage and then a voiceover afterward but that means you have to edit the video, add the voice parts, listen and watch, re-edit everything before uploading and do your day job? No thank you and I appreciate your decision. Live streaming would be easier and even that's a lot more work than most folks appreciate.

Also, when you edit your videos, it means you have to hear your own voice in a recording. I hate hearing my own voice in a recording! Its so weird!

I love Johnny's way of dealing with backseating. They will ask for no backseating but then if they genuinely want help from the audience they'll ask in a French accent. Granted this is during streams so harder to do to filter KZbin comments
@ButMadNNW626 Жыл бұрын
I also love that and how it almost bit them on the bum playing _Frog Detective_ because they wanted to read Frog’s lines in a French accent until someone in chat pointed out the house rule. So we got Benoit Blanc Frog instead. 😂

Yeah, as Ellen was talking in this video I was thinking about how Johnny deals with this. But each to their own, Ellen's dislike of Let's Plays seems a bit wider than just what Johnny doesn't like about them. I also think about what Luke does on his channel which is basically just Lego dinosaurs (I know it's more than this but lol) and if my "day job" was Let's Play, I wouldn't want to do that in my free time either.
@snorpenbass4196 Жыл бұрын
@@johnnyt7067 I mean, women tend to get a lot more nasty feedback than men (or NB's like Johnny), so while they may have gotten backseat gamers I doubt they got the sheer volume of noise Ellen got. Not saying it wasn't exhausting for them, but I think Ellen got it a bit worse.

I just wish you had the time to do more regular videos here, but I'm happy we can get anything at all. Loved the BioShock playthrough, have never played that game nor seen anyone play it before, but was very glad my first experience with that game was with your funny commentary and hilarious cries of anguish whenever some jump scare happened! Love you, Ellen!

10 years ago I worked on a Dark Souls lets play with my partner, She played, recorded and edited while I had to watch it over to write a funny script, then record that script in character, which included long stupid stories that I got annoyed if I messed up halfway through. It was a lot of work for how basic the videos came out. So you have a lot of respect from me for actually knowing what you're doing and finishing the whole thing.

For what it’s worth, I really really enjoyed your Bioshock playthrough. I had loads of fun watching you play it your way, and I looked forward to each upload. All your little Ellen-isms are exactly what made it fun to watch in the first place, so I dunno why anyone would complain. Thanks for that series, and I totally get why you wouldn’t want to do another one. I appreciate all you do here and over on OX 💜

I found your channel through Tom Scott, and I subscribed. I like this channel, it makes me a happy. My hands are really useless, unless I'm playing an instrument. Using a keyboard? Nope! I can't play any games, and I have tried... Watching you play Bioshock was epic (or is it "fire" now?)... I love to hear you talk about other things as well, of course, I'm not an animal (to quote Mr Rotten). I'm staying, and I'll watch and listen to your videos. The tiny minds barking at the trees of their own inability to crate things can't stop shoving the abuse they feel in their tiny souls, Sorry about that. You are honest, as far as I can tell, and I want to see more of the things you love. Keep on making videos, please. Lots of love and an even bigger "Thank you!" from Sweden. Before any of the arses who can't help themselves start in the comments: English isn't my first language, Swedish is.

Honestly props to finishing a project that you have left unfinished for years, not a lot of people can say they finished some long time unfinished projects. Takes a lot of work like you mentioned and some losses but I had heaps of fun with the series so thank you for the bioshock series! Hope to see more from your personal channel!

Honestly, if I recall correctly, I forgot about the camera for most of the game during my first playthrough too. As someone who loves replaying the series, I know to use the camera now, but using the mechanic does take me away from the action itself. An equivalent in another game I also love, is using the Psychoscope in Prey. Sure, you can still do attacks while using the Psychoscope, remembering to use it while freaking out about a mimic that's trying to eat your face (even if you have the Mimic Detection chipset equipped) is another thing to keep in mind while trying to scream and kill things, especially when the game is new to you and you're still bracing for an unexpected attack.

As someone who used to stream on twitch for a hot minute your set up list gave me flashbacks. 🤣 And I didn't have to do any editing!

The 1st reason is why one of my MUST HAVES when searching for my house was being able to have my own office. I don't have to take an hour or more to set up anymore. 2nd reason is valid as heck. I do enjoy editing but it takes SOO LONG especially when you're still learning. I still work a full time job, so it's hard to make the time for editing. But that's why Let's Plays are my preferred style. I would never be able to keep a consistent Streaming schedule.

Hey Ellen. I have been recording Let's Plays on KZbin for about 1.5 years now (so still pretty new) but seeing all the stuff you had to deal with recording your Bioshock Let's Play makes me happy I chose to record and upload the way I do, which is very rudimentary and unedited, so thanks for unintentionally justifying my choices so far. Also, hearing you talk about backseat gamers helped me to realize that a former subscriber of mine was not just being an engaging viewer but rather a backseat gamer. I wasn't really sure how to handle the situation, but I knew it was upsetting me for some reason. Now I know! So thanks!

My equiptment and situation may be quite different from youra but it atill stuxk with me. The editing thr decision do either long episodes or cut up, mashed and highly edited videos were always on the back of my mind. Its quite a thing to be able to pull off lets plays and have be successful enough now, comaperd to when KZbin was still in its infancy. LOVED this video so much Ellen. Thank you!
