Today I met up with a couple good local ham club members and I brought along the new Icom IC-705 so they can get a chance to play with it and tell us what they think about it. We made a couple contacts with it but there was more discussing and exploring than operating :)

I have been watching HRC for the last few months as I am trying to get active as an operator again after 20+ years of inactivity. I placed an order last night for an IC-705, and looking forward to getting on HF. My focus getting active again is EMCOMM with capability to operate fixed/mobile/portable and off-grid. Eric does an outstanding job of presenting materials and making these videos fun to watch. Kudos!!! MikeG NK8B (OH)

I have had mine for a week or so and it's an awesome little unit. I did a SOTA on G/SP-010 at weekend and the 2m reports were pretty much all "59 nice audio" out to 100mi or so off the battery pack's 5W until the battery was exhausted in about 90mins. I know people have been saying about the lack of a tuner but I'm a resonant antenna kind of guy, so overall I'm pretty happy with the unit.

I am glad the speaker is loud and of good sound, you also finally answered my question about wether you could through WiFi connect directly to a Reflector (sort of like a hotspot but without actually needing one), also glad to see the radio performing for a descent period of time on the internal Li-ion battery 🔋!! Will it be possible to use IC-705 with a liner amplifier, e.g IC-PW1 for HF? I.e is the 5w / 10w output from 705 sufficient to be used with a linear amp? If that's possible you could use it like 7300 when at home, and take it with you when on a trip?

The 705 is causing me problems. I own a 9700, will be buying a 7300 shortly. Am looking for a portable HF rig; was considering the Yaesu 891 but wonder if I shouldn't go for the 705 instead and stay 'in brand'. Ease of use, familiarity with menus etc. Cost is in favour of the 891; the £400 could buy a nice battery and the ancillaries, or a Super Antenna. The 891 also has 100W and very good DSP. Thoughts please? 73s, John M7JHA

For you QRP fans out there I see they have released the new icom 705 for about $1,300 dollars. But for about $450 dollars you can get a small lightweight QRP size Xiegu G90 transciever with internal antenna tuner that is so good it could probably tune up a head of lettuce, an antenna analyzer, a water fall, and up to 20 watts. However if you save up all your hard earned money, for and extra $850 more dollars you can actually get an icom 705 with no antenna tuner. ??? uh what did you say $850 dollars more of my hard earned money and NO ANTENNA TUNER. ??

Hello, Glen K4KV here. My take was very positive on the 705 until I learned that all bands above 26Mhz were DOWNCONVERTED, not DDS. As the owner of an Anan 7000, Hermes SDR, and a IC-9700, which are TRUE DDR, DDS, radios, this was disappointing and will cause me to bypass this model. Such a shame, for maybe a little more effort on Icom's part, this could have been a great radio.

K. R. Ellis They wouldn’t be able to operate it if it was not FCC approved.

@@RobPetty622 that's why I asked. I haven't found the FCC certification yet and I was told by a retailer that they couldn't give me an MSRP because the certification was still pending.

That LCD screen is not really readable in the sun, dealbreaker for a portable radio. ICOM fans put down your rose colored glasses.

So so sad it does not have an internal antenna tuner on this 705. Look at the xiegu g90 if you want a good qrp radio. The xiegu g90 has an internal antenna tuner so good it could probably tune up a head of lettuce and water fall and much cheaper and better. This 705 cost so much that when you get it and find out you do not have an internal antenna tuner and you want to sell it. You will be stuck with it. Save yourself a heart ache. Wait for the next upgrade with the internal antenna tuner. Did you noticed they only used one band for hf and did not change the bands. I wonder why duhhhhhhhh they knew the antenna was only resonant on one band and did not dare try the others on this video. Ha Ha Ha Ha

@@redman840 OH I guess they don't eat rice in Japan. For the $1,300 you have to pay for that dummed down 705 where they just took the 7300 and removed the antenna tuner and reduced the power and raised the price for, you could get a garbage truck load of rice. Chuckle Chuckle. Are we having fun yet.?
