So excited!!! Just pulled the trigger on an IC-705 on gigaparts bundled with several extras. Have been itching to buy it and this video sealed the deal with that case! I applied the coupon and was happy to learn there were still some of the free gifts to be had. So thank you for being there for us!!! This will be my first radio other than my few HT’s and I can’t wait. I’m a relatively new Tech licensed Ham and am taking the General test in two weeks.

I got an IC 705 and made contacts in Canada and Cuba on 20m running 5w with an End Fed half wave 80-10m antenna. It's a awesome radio for sure. One problem that I have found is that I cannot use an HT 2m/70cm antenna with an BNC L connector. SWR is too high to use, unless I'm grabbing the middle of the antenna. It took a while to figure out out to program local repeaters into the radio, but got it figured out. The preamp comes in handy when scanning through the (2m) band. Helps find repeaters far off. Even done simplex with a couple of near by Hams on 2m SSB. 73, W4ISB

What a fantastic radio. I felt the same excitement when out of the box, made contacts with Norway and Belgium on battery power from near London UK into a wire antenna on 20m. Bought the back pack too, not quite as nice as the LC156 for the 703, does the job though, plenty of room for battery packs and antennas, resonant antennas all the way - thanks for your great video!

Can you recommend a radio that will serve through a SHTF situation? I'm on my own in this purchase and brand new to Ham radio. I have many questions and welcome any suggestions. I need to be mobile as my home doesn't even receive cell phone signals (I'm situated in the mountains between two hills, so I'll need a mobile unit and in an emergency, I'd definitely want to be mobile (can a Ham be operated while driving such as a CB is used?). I want it powerful enough that I'm not struggling to be heard, and I'd like multiple options for keeping it powered (solar/battery/USB). This unit Eric is showing looks very nice (I haven't looked at the price tag yet). But is 5w enough to meet a person's needs in the worst of situations? What makes the radio powerful - just the watts, or some other factor I need to consider? Even though I'm new, I definitely do not want to buy some "beginner's set" with a plan to upgrade later, I want to purchase one good, reliable radio and be done with it. I'm capable of learning the equipment, that's not an issue, but I don't want unnecessary features, just an excellent emergency communications device. And the ability to send an email from the radio, as Eric said the radio in this video can do, sounds like an excellent emergency resource to have, but as the sender of the email, does it require that I have the radio cabled to a computer or wirelessly connected to an internet account? I've got more digging to do on these features - so much to learn. Eric also references a "tuner" and I'm wondering what that means and if it is a necessary to purchase a tuner in addition to the radio itself. I don't want to spend a fortune as this is not a passion or a hobby for me and funds are limited, but I don't want to save money only to regret my purchase in an emergency. I have family around the US and would like to know that I can find out what's going on near them, or participate in relaying messages if I needed to reach them. Thank you for any suggestions.

I'm sold and my next radio will be the Icom IC-705. Until the 705 came along, I was saving for the Yaesu FT-991A. My one minor disappointment with the 705 is that the company put a Micro USB connector on it instead of the more modern USB-C connector.

Since I am brand new to HAM, is that combo going to work??? (75Watt Antenna and a100Watt radio). I don't want to burn the unit or something like that. One tiny note I have about the word antenna: Antenna is singular and plural of the word is antennae (there is no such thing as antennas). I notice that a lot of people make that mistake. @skyscratcher88253 жыл бұрын
Weight! This radio and similar types FT818/G90 are built for remote-off grid use, SOTA operations etc. involving hiking, sometimes significant distances. Lookup up the power draw of a FT991 even at 25W verse the 705 at 10W. You will quickly find out in order to operate the FT991 for more than a couple of hours you need 30-50lbs of batteries. The 705 requires 5-6 lbs. QRP is also a challenge based on efficiency and out of the box thinking. People still enjoy fishing even though every supermarket in the world has fish.
@jeepNtreetop3 жыл бұрын
I would say that most people who have a 100w radio will turn up max power 95% of the time. Working QRP can be challenging and frustrating if coupled with an inefficient antenna. Instead of fine tuning the antenna, most just turn up the power in hopes that it will make up for the shortcomings.
