Icom IC 718. The Saga Continues

My grandfather who passed a few years ago was such an electronic guru like you are and an excellent ham radio operator! I was luckily blessed with some of his electronic skills but nothing like you or him! I would kill to be able to understand electricity like you! Great video!

Good work, I 've got 3 of them that I scored for free, one just had a bad VFO, easy fix, one was cooked worse than yours, the other had a fault with the front key panel, all the repair components came from the cooked unit, I love them such a simple transceiver to work on, Cheers

Thanks for watching and commenting. I do like the radio. It fits in my car much better than my FT-757GX and is so much easier to work while on the road. My radio has the digital DSP which helps a lot but the noise blanking in this thing is the best. You are right, they are easy to wok on but I still wonder what takes out the PA in such a violent manner.

I sold my Yaesu FT-840 because I really like this Icom. It also has the optional digital analog filter in it so it makes a good mobile.

Hey Man - I'm glad it worked out for you. Dang it though, I was going to offer you the PA board out of my 718. I just sent it into a repair shop and got the verdict - FUBAR. My main board is toast, and iCOM does not have any spares. My PA board is probably OK. Do you know of anyone else looking for one? That begs the question ... why is iCOM offering the IC-718 for sale NEW - when they know they don't have spare parts? What would they do with a warranty claim - just give you a whole new radio? Knowing what I know now - I wouldn't buy one.

Timing is everything. LOL. That is a good question though. Where did you see a 718 for sale? I never believed Icom anyway. I am sure there are spares around somewhere they just don't want to let go of them.

Hello, I'm an entry level radio operator and I have been looking hard at this radio for it's simplicity but good range of basic functions and bands. In your opinion is this a good radio, quality and build wise?

It is a very nice radio. The controls are easy to use and the audio quality is pretty good. I do recommend that you find one with the optional DSP filter in it. It makes all the difference.

Weren't you supposed to adjust the power at 30mv? Your generator was showing .08mv. Maybe that's why the rig power meter is off.

It calls for 30mV RMS which would be 84mV P-P. Very confusing. If I cut it down to 30mV it doesn't drive it hard enough. I wish they would have put it in DB.
