I love how you are teaching your daughter all these COOL things, and letting her actually do some of the work. Tremendously valuable lessons she won’t get in school.👍

Thank you so much! Both kids are super capable little people so we try and get our hands dirty as much as possible. Fortunately their school is quite new and has some really excellent, engaged teachers who support this kind of learning and making, so it's all reinforced at school as well as at home. :)

I am a maker too and I remember my dad teaching me how to make things when I was your daughters age. I recently renovated an old farmhouse using the skills my dad taught me... awesome to see dads still doing this!!! Happy to join the Love Make Share fam. I'm planning on making a lightbox of my own.. will link your video in the description of mine!

This was a great start, because most people would’ve been afraid to even experiment out of fear of failure not realizing that failure is the greatest teacher ever in existence. We have to fall in order to learn how to get back up. However, through the eyes of someone else’s attempts we could all stand to learn something from those who’ve failed enough to be successful in areas that other may still be stuck. Here’s some tips: 1- You should’ve used Frosted Glass Spray as your defuser (sold at Ace Hardware, Home Depot, or any other hardware store). 2- Keep in mind the deeper your platform the more visible the light will be when traveling through. 3- You can actually purchase foam board from any local dollar store in your area, they keep a crazy load of it in the craft area. 4- Wal-Mart actually sells huge picture frame sets for very low budget prices. I truly appreciate your guts in trying new things, because we unfortunately exist within a society that divides us as individuals preventing most of us from learning anything outside the box by manipulating our own choices as a whole; however that’s no excuse for us to give in. Everyone was born with their own mind, free will, and ability to possibly use critical thinking. Thank you so much, and I look forward to more of your videos in the future.

Hey, thanks for your great feedback and kind comment! I agree that it's important to experiment and to put pieces together, to approach situations with an attitude of looking for solutions. My goal though all this is to show that experimenting and making stuff is low-stakes and fun. Things don't have to be perfect, just purposeful - even if that purpose is (as is the case here) can we make something of value out of trash! Same idea with my more recent diorama video... Often junk plus effort can be very rewarding. Keep on spreading that positive attitude, friend, and hope you find success in all you do!

The thing I absolutely loved most about this video was seeing you encircle your daughter as she so intently worked with you on this project. It was also obvious that there was a calm and a 'no pressure' feeling for you or her. So many adults get impatient when a child is helping or trying to learn or experience something new. I also have a feeling that you probably discussed, together, how you could improve it, another learning experience and great life skill. What a wonderful parent you are. I taught high school art and your daughter will be the kind of student that every teacher would want in any class. Also about the actual DYI great for working with what you had (also a great teachable moment). I like the frame idea, I have a bunch kicking around, but mine are wood. Also with a wood one I think I'll add triangular sides so it slants slightly. Ideally it would be nice if I can think of a way to make itadjustable to any angle from flat to about 20 degrees. P.S. You've made me curious about your Polar Knowledge Canada poster in the background. I kept wanting to see the whole poster.

Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm very proud of my littlest, who appears in this video. Thus far her teachers seem to agree as well! I'd be lying if there weren't times that I'm working on something with the kids and someone loses patience - we're still human - but so much of what we do is rooted in play that it's hard to get (or stay) upset. The poster was gifted to me - I have a manuscript of a novel set in the high Arctic that's currently in its second draft, and it was a source of inspiration while I was really in the weeds with research and writing. When I stepped back from that project for a bit of a break, the poster migrated to the shop!

First. Thanks for showing the process of making a lightbox and giving your "I wish I had" tips at the end. Every project is a learning experience. And two big thumbs up for letting your daughter get her hands dirty and help with the scary parts like soldering. I must be part Frankenstein monster b/c to this day I am too scared to use a soldering iron. Fire bad!

Great channel and super well explained, thank you. Off to build a lightbox, thinking of using white Christmas lights that I found lying around???

Thank you so much! Sure, why not use Christmas lights? My thought there is to make sure you've got good diffusion, otherwise the light will be spotty and uneven. Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

Good luck! A good diffusion layer will be key for little lights like that. Would love to hear how it goes!

Are the LED lights bright enough to trace onto watercolor paper? I’d love one of these for my painting projects.

Hmmm... Probably! I'm afraid this particular tool has been retired so I'm unable to check, but it likely could!

Can i use white fairy lights instead cause already have one ??????????
@LoveMakeShareTV
@LoveMakeShareTV 5 жыл бұрын
Can't hurt to try! My only thought about fairy lights is that they're often relatively dim, quite warm in their colour, and are - by design - small points of light. If they're just white then no problem! But they'll definitely need diffusion to make their light more even. If you try it let me know, I'd love to hear how it goes!

Another P.S. I got so curious about your poster that I searched google and found the site and checked out the awesome looking Canadian High Arctic Research Station. I read the POLAR UPdate, Summer 2019 field season at the Canadian High Arctic Research Station campus and what is all being done including dealing with the housing crisis for the Inuit. What a fabulous use of our tax dollars. It certainly is way up north!
