The maker of Sakuma’s Drops, a popular Japanese confection featured in the 1988 Studio Ghibli film Grave of the Fireflies, will go out of business in January 2023. Sakumaseika said on November 9, 2022, that the company was forced to fold because of the pressure of inflation and rising energy prices. The candy has been Sakumaseika’s flagship product since the company was established in 1908.

As a Japanese-American, hearing this news hurts as this was my grandfathers favorite candy ever since he was a kid. He would always have about 10 cans in his pantry and everytime I visit him as a kid, he'd give me a couple to keep without my mom looking. He died 6 years ago and I still miss him...now I'm sad to see his favorite candy and the epitome of my childhood memories are going to die off too

Sad (but also fun) fact! If you compare the label on the tin as seen in _Grave of the Fireflies_ to a modern tin, you'll notice that the name is written backwards from right to left instead of left to right. This is because as you probably know, Japanese was traditionally written from top to bottom, right to left. As Japan was modernizing it's writing system, they started righting horizontally, but didn't start writing from left to right until quite a while later. Sakuma Drops were made during this period, hence why the name isn't written vertically, but is written from right to left!

My grandma had one last can of these she saved, she gave me a few every now and them. She passed away about 6 years ago, and Hotaru no Haka really solidified this candy in my mind. It's sad news that they're discontinuing such a popular candy.
@lenc99
@lenc99 Жыл бұрын
Actually one of the biggest reason of the discontinuation is because its not as popular as it used to be. It actually quite rare to see people buy this candy nowadays. Their recent peak sale was during the hype of firefly anime and even then most sales come from overseas but outside from that this candy is getting less and less sales. Younger people prefer others brands of candy that definitely more modern while most older people that used to enjoy this candy usually unable to eat it anymore due to health complications.

Japan really has a knack at holding on to retro stuff like this, a nostalgic product for the Japanese and for some in the rest of Asia, it has an old style candy flavor that's simple, cheap and readily available back in the days before and when Japan was recovering after the war. In my nation the analog would be Vanda pastilles and hawthorn Haw flakes.

Ikr like with Nintendo and the Famicom (Japanese version of the NES) cuz they kept on supporting it and making it up until 2003 and the system came out in 1983 so for 20 years they supported that console which in and of itself is kind of impressive if you think about it while the NES in North America was discontinued in 1995 which was 10 years after it came out in 1985.

As already said production costs (factory maintainance, logistics, inflation of other commodities,etc) and demand. You won’t see the big industrial hold of big competitors like Hershey’s, nor nestle factories (KitKats, toblerone, bubblegums) yet hard candies that is sold such as in japan may be tricky for myself to understand is their brand popular but small manufacturing? Do they need reorganization? Is the establishment rental and upkeep so costly?

@@brexitgreens Yes, I used the term "westerner" because generally today, the Americas, Europe, Australia and Africa are generally considered "west," while most of Asia is considered "east." And, being that the article is Chinese and discusses a Japanese candy, I am pretty sure Horlicks was not distributed to the "east" back in the 60's when they were most popular, but I could be wrong. In all my travels to Asia, I have never seen them. As far as the iron curtain is concerned (i.e., EAST Germany), I believe the direction term was used only to refer to the individual countries at the time. Germany, however, has always been considered "west." But anyway, have you ever had Horlicks candy?

@@spang9782 Maybe once. Or never at all. And certainly not malted milk ones. I guess it would be something vaguely similar to Germany's Werther's Original.
