This 64 year old man in Oita prefecture only sleeps around 3 hours so that he can setup and open his ramen yatai stall for his customers. He enjoys having his regulars come to eat his ramen and visit him. He doesn't even have a cellphone, but enjoys his work. If you have a chance, why don't you go visit his yatai stall?

There is nothing to praise about overworking. This man looks tired, he is limping and yet he just gets 3 hrs of sleep. He's not gonna last long if he goes on like this. That being said, I appreciate the love he puts into his product. It's simple, filling, most likely cheap and I bet, delicious.

Live in Japan. Met tons of older people who continue to work because they are afraid if they stop, their health will decline. So they want to move their bodies and use their brains. However this is overkill and really gives insight to how brutal Japanese work culture is. I really hope he gets rest. Reminds me of my husband’s mother. Close to 80 and still working. Part time, so there’s that but still. Makes me worry. Edit: should note that I’m not against the elderly working or anything if that’s what they like to do! I think it’s good but moderation is key with anything. I hope this man gets some rest when he can or at least get more hours of sleep.

He’s stupid for not taking advantage of his skills. People would willingly pay more for his product. Is he kind and humble? Sure, but he’s dumb for not seeing that his food has a higher value for the amount of work and effort he puts into it. Lowering yourself for others happiness is not always a good thing, sometimes people deserve to earn more but choose not to out of humility

I mean in reality, this is what ideal society would look like. Someone opens up their share of value to society, their friends, peers and some strangers come to enjoy the value. They enjoy each other's company every day or every couple of days, talk a bit, help each other out when needed - and the work becomes quite rewarding. I highly doubt the man wants to retire, simply because of the meaning serving his community and familiar faces gives him. Hearing that birthday story really warms the heart, all aside from the lack of sleep; but some people can go off less sleep I guess. At least this man seemed to not complain about 3 hours of sleep saying "I'll rest when I'm tired". Work that you like to do is what gives your life extra meaning, especially when it's serving other people in some kind of way and having a connection with them. The Japanese especially understand the value of this, as they are very isolated people in their daily lives. God bless this man and his community.
