There are some women, of her same social standing, who for the sake of appearances, wouldn't have done so.

Carrie felt like she was entitled to others, their lifestyle and wealth. Idk why people are acting as if Carrie grew up in the hood because she didn’t lmao she’s a middle class vvh!te woman who has privilege over those who weren’t, the same way we had to make a way and grind, she could do so too. @@Princessdollamanda I never said that wealth automatically means someone has zero insecurity. Especially in this system, insecurity is built into the American life, no matter what class. Moments of insecurity is a part of the human experience, and this nation intentionally triggers it to create consumerism and means of control. And I agree, I do think Carrie's character was entitled, lacked self-awareness despite being a writer, and had A LOT privilege. Idk the characters background growing up, but the character in SATC lived comfortably in Manhattan on a columnist salary, one that afforded her a wardrobe of designer items. But I do think that the proximity to wealth, without being able to access it was apart of her addiction to Big, who had wealth and power, and quite frankly seemed unimpressive and obviously dysfunctional to me. Carrie isn't a real person, and some of her behavior was dramatized for the sake of creating storylines, just as Natasha's character was intentionally created to be a stark contrasts of Carrie's. But I DO think that class was an intentionally written component to how stark that contrast was.
@Princessdollamanda2 ай бұрын
@@ariesmry Well as someone born and raised in NYC, in order for Carrie to be living in a rent stabilized apartment it’s because it’s where she was born and raised all of her life, that part of Manhattan has been one of the wealthiest neighborhoods for decades. Carrie’s issue was that she wanted to keep up with the Joneses, and wanted to so badly be apart of high class society. While Carrie isn’t a real person (which is the obvious I’m pretty sure we all know that) I’ve met plenty of people who carry on in the same exact way Carrie does and sometimes worse. No one is responsible for your insecurities and issues, as an adult you have to work on that and fix it yourself. No one wants to constantly hear someone moping and complaining all day about this and that, either do something to improve and change it or sh u t up about it. Being upset about what someone else has is not going to change anything, like the saying goes “what I eat, don’t make you sh* t” and that’s what people need to remember.

I also like to think the neutrals Natasha wore were a way to show that she was being projected onto by Carrie and Big. Carrie saw her as perfect and hated her for that. Both Carrie and Big alluded to her being simple, dull, and beige as a person. We didn't get to see Natasha as a real person because she wasn't treated like one. I remember back then lots of young ladies wanted to be just like Carrie or be just like Samantha not realizing that later on in life it's going to come and bite you in the ass and you're gonna wind up lonely cat lady, look at all these years in her 50s she's alone and she has a cat! This is all true, but I don't see Natasha as some Paragon of Ideal Womanhood who had life all figured out in her 20s. Natasha is blameless, but she is also a product of her place in Old Money society. She had no experience in having to prove herself, because she was born on top with the keys to every door. Confidence comes a lot easier when privilege sends you the message from birth that you are valued and you automatically have a secure position. She also would have been given an exclusive education, taught impeccable manners, taught appropriate dressing, and what is required socially. Natasha was just swimming in her natural element while Carrie was trying to scale a mountain with no instructions. They come from such vastly different starting points that I can't really compare them. In the end, Big was bad for both of them.
@ariesmry2 ай бұрын
I appreciate this viewpoint-- while it's easy to demonize Carrie and place Natasha on a pedestal, I think it's less about the dynamics of two individuals and more about the dynamics of class playing out here. Big and Natasha ended up together, not because she was the "better" woman per se, but because she was in the same class as him, and people tend to marry within their own class. Men like Big are socially rewarded for marrying and he was very much so going along with class expectations. Natasha's character was written to be a stark contrast to Carrie. I think she showed a level of maturity in how she interacted with Carrie after finding out about the affair, which I appreciated about the character, but much of how she presents is due to her being born into wealth.

Carrie was obsessed with all the aspects of Natasha that Big chose to leave her for. The obsession comes from the fact that she will never be that way, and can't come to terms. I think the disfunction from Carrie came because it really messed with her self confidence and ego. Carrie often struggled with matters of the ego, and codependency. This is just my observation, but she often dismissed what her friends would say if it did not align with her "fantasy" of the moment. Carrie is a creative, emotional, and a free spirit - the trouble with that is that people like us don't seem to "grow up" with the rest around us. The fact that Natasha handled the situation so well, the entire time, messed with Carrie too. She could not stand that the more she fought against Natasha and Big being together, the more embarrassing it made her look. Carrie probably also really respected Natasha's archetype, seeing that Big fell so hard for her, AND the fact Big couldn't articulate his real emotions, I can see how it confused Carrie all the more. Carrie sees Big with Natasha and thinks, "this is the life Big was searching for, that's what he meant when he said he couldn't commit to me", and she says that part aloud. What she's thinking and not telling everyone, but you see in her actions, "I need to see what the big difference between her and me is, seeing that she is acting so opposite than me in this situation, I know I am in the wrong. I can't stand the thought of Big with someone else, but I know he can't be happy with me, however, if I can show him that I am better by disregarding my self worth and being wherever he needs me for an affair, perhaps I will win him over and show them BOTH that I am better and worthy of this." Of course this messes with Carries perception of herself and that becomes obvious when we see she just can't face Natasha. She knew she f*ed up, and she knew deep down she was way better than that behavior. We can tell Natasha's inner monologue is probably a bit calmer, but we KNOW she's at least thinking "man, I really hope I am wrong about all this," you can tell she really doesn't want the beef with Carrie, to be fighting over a man. Carrie couldn't get over the ego wound Big gave her when he cheated and left, and instead of aligning herself more with her own words from her column and with herself and her friends, she actively chose to pursue the favor of a Red Flag Man. Big also probably would have grown and had a happy life with Natasha if Carrie hadn't been so receptive of his stupidity. At the end of the day, I still blame the man. Big was a POS, never deserved Carrie OR Natasha imo with his manspreading all over the world, if that dude just knew what he wanted and acted like a good person, neither of those good women would have had to deal with any of this- I just wish there was a deleted scene somewhere of Samantha kicking him in the b@lls because I know she'd have been the one just waaaaaiting to do it for years.

To recap: 1) Carrie harassed and stalked Natasha to a restaurant. 2) Immediately intruded, took Natasha’s glass and DRANK from it! 3) Had the gall to look like she was waiting for an apology with that “You are?…” 4) Wore that fabulous Dior newspaper dress as her husband’s mistress UNHINGED!

Idk how Natasha didn’t press charges. Carrie stalked and harassed her twice.

That was so unhinged! I never understood what she was hoping to achieve by meeting Natasha at that time -- that woman divorced that cheater and moved on, there is nothing for her to say to Carrie at that point in her life. The time to talk was when Natasha caught her in her home. Instead of running down the stairs like a thief, that was the time for Carrie to face the music and have a conversation with her.

@@annaguobadia4587 if Natasha was a pick me she would’ve forgiven Bigs bad behavior over and over again like Carrie did. Carrie is the greatest example of a “pick me, love me” kind of girl.

Natasha was an ego thing for Big. A young beautiful, elegant poised, dignified woman. But Big is arrogant so he ultimately chose Carrie because she was a fan.

Love this video. I always disliked Carrie's character. She was immature, and a social climber. She was definitely not a "girls girl". And Big always made a fool of her. He knew she would put up with anything from him. I always liked Charlotte and Samantha. Out of all the characters they seemed grounded in their identities, even though they were on opposite ends of the spectrum, with Samantha prefer non-exclusivity and Charlotte wanting a traditional marriage and family.

@@FayeBeSimmin I liked Amanda the most: she was the one who had the realest problems: boss doesnt like her, gets cat called on the street, wonders about her style, .... she wasnt really charming, or good in bed, or anything, just a normal woman going through normal stuff in life.

Terrific video analysis. Here's my problem with Carrie, she never grows from this. I dont mind the cheating plot line, because in the end we are all human. We are flawed and make mistakes. At 18 years old, I was in love with my boyfriend who didnt love me the same way and instead of moving on, i thought if i show him i love him, he'll come around. He cheated on me and got married to his new girlfriend that he cheated on me with. When I was 19 years old, I had an affair with a married man who later said he wanted to be with me because he was unhappy in his marriage. It was then in my revolution that there was something wrong with me. I was seeking approval from men. I was insecure and ashamed because if the married man I was with could so easily betray his wife, I'm no better than my ex. Im 39 years old now. I'm happily married to man who loves and respects me. It took me a few years and therapy to realize my worth and others worth as well. You can't bring happiness to yourself by bringing misery to others. If the writers could have had Carrie just at least have one scene if not a story line just about realizing how wrong she was about Big and her affair with him, I would have given her a little more respect. But no, she continues to use and hurt others. She's not a bad person in the sense that she INTENTIONALLY hurts others, but she's a bad person that she doesn't take or own responsibility for when she does. She's supposed to be an adult but still acts like she's in junior high. She never grows as a character at all in the series. That's what is so frustrating. All the girls grew into women at the end of the show except Carrie. Charlotte learns that love isn't home and gardens, it's the one you least suspect that will change your life for the better. Miranda learns to compromise and what selfless love is instead of always putting her career first above other. Samantha opens her heart to a man who loves and adores her and lets herself love and be loved. What does Carrie do? She ends up with walking red flag Big. He doesn't respect her or truly love her, she just wouldn't stop kissing his butt. The minute Carrie told him to forget her name, he freaked out because he had no control over her. That's why he wanted her more than ever.

Carrie always spoke of Natasha with hatred and tried to depreciate her at the time she was the person who tried to ruin her relationships with Big. Charlotte was right about her, she deserved to feel bad

This is such a great break down of Natasha, Big and Carrie. Looking at this through more mature eyes, I'm team Natasha. She deserved a better man then Big.

Her read in that restaurant was iconic. She took responsibility for not wanting to acknowledge Big's sketchiness while letting Carrie know she had no time for either of them any more and wouldn't make the same mistake again.

Natasha had so much grace. I bet she knew from the beginning that Carrie was in love with her husband, but felt sympathy and pity for her. Empathy can make you look like an easy fool, easy to betray

The fact that Carrie continuously gets her happy ever after is the biggest joke. She cheats on Aiden and he takes her back, she breaks up someone elses marriage and gets to be married to the guy she cheated with, is super whiny and annoying and her friends always accommodates it, she kisses Aiden whilst married to Big and Big forgives her immediately and even buys her a diamond, gets back with Aiden as soon as Big dies.... in the real world someone like Carrie would be a broken mess with nothing to show for it. But in the show someone like her is completely desirable??

I remember when I was a teen, that scene in restaurant where Natasha speaks “I’m sorry…” was like a cold shower to me. I should have recall this scene much earlier when I had similar situation irl. She’s a guide on how to be a wholesome woman.

The way I would've gotten an order of protection against Carrie, because why are you popping up at my job, requesting me on SM, knowing where I live??? etc. that's scary behavior. Natasha was a sweetheart because even after that she sat down with her because she felt bad for her, very classy woman. Glad she moved onto bigger and better things. Imagine your ex-husbands wife who he cheated on you with is st a lking you years later because she wants answers about why he left you a million dollars 🤦🏾♀ Carrie was shameless lmao

The real sad part is that the person who wrote the articles on which the series is based on never married her "Mr. Big". She's wildly successful but recently admitted to regretting having chosen a career over having children because as she is now in her 60s, she's "truly alone." Which isn't to say that childless women aren't happy, rather that she's finally starting to realize that chasing after men, money, and material things, isn't the flex she thought it was, and completely wasted her youth. Perhaps if she had been more like Charlotte and Natasha, as "boring" as that was compared to club hopping well into your 30s and 40s, she would've at least had the option. If she were smart she would've use her connection to Charlotte to network and elevate her life. Instead she makes snarky comments about her money and continues to act like a teenager with her first credit card. In real life, Charlotte would've distanced herself away from Carrie as it became clear that she's too immature to be sitting at the same table. As a married woman, especially in high society, the last thing you want around is some regular chickenhead who is perfectly comfortable sleeping with married men.

I haven’t watched the new series but there should be an episode where Carrie thinks if she did make right choice with her abortion now that she is widowed and distanced from Samantha (I doubt she is coming back) and apparently Miranda was moving too? And Charlotte has her family and her own issues (and she can Carrie weren’t that close to rely on when she becomes 80), and Standford’s actor has died so I assume the character has too? I haven’t seen the new show but just heard things of it. Even if by episodes end Carrie decides she doesn’t need kids (and she apparently has some new friends) it’s should be something she thinks right now in her life.
