19:45 The E36's S50 engine was bespoke and not a run of the mill engine 'turned up to 11'. Seems strange to me that the E36 gets so much criticism when it laid the foundations for the E46 which everyone raves about, they're basically the same car underneath. The main complaint about the E36 at the time was the slow steering rack which can be easily swapped out for a faster one.

SMG was first available in the e36 not the e46. And the e36 saloon is lighter and stiffer than the coupe. And Dan should try and get a drive in a e36 318is motorsport 2. What a cool car they are.

I'd love one on the Civic Type R. It's been through loads of changes, good and bad but overall it's one of the all time great hot hatch legends.

Someone needs to lend Andrew their E90/92 M3 as I’m sure his views would change now and both of them need to drive a manual F80 M3. Would love to hear Dan’s thoughts on the manual G80 and why he thinks it’s much better than the new M2. Really enjoyed this episode!

I've never understood the idea of celebrating turbocharged engines that don't feel turbocharged. That bit of lag, the feeling of the boost building, isn't that part of what makes them so thrilling? I love a good normally aspirated engine too, but for very different reasons. Both are great but, when you try to make a turbo motor feel normally aspirated, it will inevitably have loads of mid-range torque that the normally aspirated unit wouldn't have, so it ends up feeling a bit false to me. It feels like the worst of both worlds somehow.
@s87-d7dКүн бұрын
finally someone said this I agree with you
@FenderUsaКүн бұрын
I agree, but in an M car you want natural aspiration so I think them trying to replicate that experience makes sense

They are a pain in the arse to skid if they aren’t linear
@maximumattackrallying5 сағат бұрын
@E12m535i isn't that part of the fun though? Like I said, both normally-aspirated and turbocharged engines can be brilliant, I just think you end up in a weird, compromised place when you try to make one feel like the other

E30 over rated, I'm afraid. Engine is wheezy and sounds coarse. Steering isn't that great. Car is bloody slow. Etc. It's ultimately all about the looks. It's a great looking little box. If it didn't look so good, nobody would really care. Not that it's terrible to drive, it's just not that great to drive.

Every other M3 : It’s man and machine working in harmony. F80 M3: It’s Man vs Machine fighting to see who is the master! Just like how 80s supercars used to be! Hairy chested!!

I remember having a test drive in an E92 M3 Coupe Manual back in about 2012 and thought it was a real let down. Sounded great but just didn't seem that quick at all. It was also very twitchy at the limit and very hard riding...I ended up buying a 996.2 Carrera 4 Manual instead...

the very first SMG gearbox was in E36 M3 gen2, and i think current gen g80 M3 comp is very underappreciated one, its way better car to drive great all around car the best since e30 and e46

E30 M3, the real M3. The OG, Homologated. End of story
@M-PASTA20 сағат бұрын
He wishes the E 36 didn’t come next, didn’t like it because it wasn’t a homologation car (which would’ve meant it had a four-cylinder and no one would’ve bought it just like almost no one bought the E30 M3) he says it didn’t have a special engine and then says the E 46 had the best engine…when it was nearly identical to the one out of the E 36 M3 🤦♂️ proper bell end. E 46 was a slightly heavier/stiffer E 36 with a 2000s body kit and worse front wheel hubs.

I’m a manual guy, but…I have an M2 CS pdk 2020, excellent cat but I don’t daily drive it (i have just 24,000 km) I drove recently a manual G80 m3 with the track pack and I immediately fell in love with this car. I live in Poland and here I can order the manual M3. What do you think that I should change the M2 CS for the M3 manual? In terms of residuals I think both car are special …

Fact check: So they did actually make an SMG E36 M3. The engine that you think is so marvellous in the E46 was literally a development of the E36’s. Still baffles me how the impression and talk about the E36 is so poor when it came out (and the bandwagon continues!) yet it was voted best handling car, and had over 100bhp per litre. So many attributes that are apparently lost on you! A few subtle tweaks to a standard E36 M3 and it’s one of the best cars ever made. Boo to the both of you! 🤨 And, yes of course this is the passionate writing of someone who’s had one for 13 years! 😅
