I absolutely feel that we should not comment on other’s weight or appearance. I have lost weight recently mainly due to a health condition, I am constantly told I look so well when I am in fact sick with a progressive illness. Saying things like “wow, you look great, how much weight have you lost?” can make a person feel they must have looked awful with the weight on. We are all more than our weight and our appearance. Just because a person earns their living online does not, I feel, entitle people to publicly comment negative views. Think them, yes, we all have our opinions but you don’t always have to share those opinions. Just my thoughts.

I don’t usually comment, but just wanted to come on and say thank you for your honesty and vulnerability. It’s refreshing to hear a digital creator speak so candidly on topics that most of us can relate to. And just to say there’s no shame in your game, you look as beautiful and as stylish as ever. And I agree, no one has the right to body shame you or anyone else for that matter. I always look forward to and get inspired by your vlogs and content. It’s good to have you back. Hx

What people write online never ceases to shock me. The fact that someone would take the time to screenshot and send you photos comparing you actually blows my mind. Truly hideous, I’m so sorry you received such an unkind hurtful message. You look fabulous, and you always have, regardless of any little changes. More importantly you are clearly very happy these days and it’s a joy to behold. x

You are one of my favorite youtubers because of your thoughtfulness and your intelligence and your eye for design/fashion and your soothing content and your honesty/vulnerability, and if someone feels the need to comment on your appearance, that means they prioritize the extremely shallow things in life, which is very sad. Keep being you, girl, the rest of us are cheering you on!

The BEST advice that I ever heard about commenting on appearance is this: if you're commenting on something that a person did not do to their appearance that morning, do NOT comment on it. Examples, "Wow I love that shirt!" "I like how you styled your hair today!" are both fantastic comments because you're giving someone kudos for a simple choice. Never say things like "Wow, you're so tall!" (that person could feel self conscious on their height), "I love your freckles" (they could hate them or have a history of skin cancer in the family they're scared of). The special rule for commenting on weight is: never say anything about weight loss UNLESS you know that someone has been actively trying to lose weight and they're doing it in a healthy way (if it's being done in an unhealthy way, or because they're sick, or grieving a loved one, this comment can be triggering), and NEVER ever comment on weight gain unless a person brings it up themselves and are signaling that it would be helpful for them to talk about it with you. It's good to remember that things we intend to be positive, may not be seen that way, and if it's not something that you'd say to your best friend, don't say it to a stranger.

The part at the beginning is exactly what I needed. I've been feeling crap recently about my body because quarantine has meant I can't get the daily activity I used to get from my commute or just day to day life. Even though I work out almost 5 days a week my body has changed a lot. Thank you for your honesty. We will all be ok!!!!

Those first 8ish minutes are why I love watching your videos so much. Like you, I was also at more or less my lowest point when I looked “healthy” and slim to the outside world and everyone was complementing me. And now these past months you see so many people talking about doing a lot of workouts during lockdown, or afterwards getting their “pre lockdown bodies” back. It’s all just so toxic and you don’t know what’s going on in someone’s life by looking at their size and how much space they take up in the world.

Thank you for this vulnerable discussion! About 2 years ago, I dropped down to what I called "my ideal weight". How did I do it? I essentially starved myself for 9 months. I was tried. I was having horrible headaches. Body aches. You name it. But I liked the way I looked for the first time since I was QUITE young. Once I realized what I was doing (and yes, you don't always realize it) and I started to improve my relationship with food, I gained the weight back quite quickly. People had a lot to say to me about it (and I'm not a public figure by any means). But what they didn't understand that for the first time in years, I had ENERGY. I was taking care of myself. I could workout without feeling like I was going to pass out. I was HEALTHIER than I had been in the years previous. That we live in a society that equates weight and health is so infuriating. Also, in light of recent world events, I have read some really interesting articles about how thinness and fatphobia are very closely related to white supremacy and the dehumanization of black bodies. Something I never knew before! Thanks for sharing.

Really needed to hear that, Alix. I have gained almost a stone in a year and my body confidence is low. We put a lot of pressure on ourselves to be our ‘best’.The reality is I prefer myself thinner, and in the past that’s been after a breakup when I’ve been unhappy. We should all challenge this thought process. Health and happiness should be the goal. You look beautiful, and more importantly you seem really kind! 💕

Why someone would spend time taking screenshots of previous pictures of you, like you aren’t aware of yourself, under the guise that they’re doing you a favor is absolutely insane to me. Self-esteem is such a treacherous game and social media has made it so much worse. I’m grateful to you for putting out great content and exchanging with us when insane and mean people think they should tell you their unsolicited opinion. I’m very happy to hear you’re in such a great place.

I totally agree that people should just not comment on other people’s bodies ever. Even if they think it’s a compliment. My husband has Thyroid cancer and after surgery, he lost a lot of weight really fast due to the thyroid replacement medication, which was absolute hell on his body. Any time someone would compliment him, he’d just say that it’s because of cancer and watch them cringe internally. No one can ever know why someone gains or loses weight and frankly, it’s no one else’s business!

Thanks for your honesty about body image/body shaming. ❤️ 1) Our bodies change as we age. We shouldn’t be shamed for looking different from our early twenties to mid/late twenties and beyond! That is completely normal and expected! 2) yes, the pandemic has vastly impacted things in terms of gym classes and even being outside. And like you said, that’s okay. It is what it is. We need to give ourselves and each other grace during this time. There’s so much to be stressed about nowadays-if we come out of this just having gained a few pounds here or there, we are so very lucky! Easier said than done, I know, but we should all aim to try it! Anyways, thank you for bringing up this topic and speaking to it in such a rational and articulate way! You’re a babe, inside and out 😍

Alix, I feel like this is so relatable. I totally nodded through most of your body content because I've been there. People have no right to comment on your body just because you're in the public eye and even in my life - friends, family members, strangers have no right to comment on mine. It's super hard to be a woman on a good day with our own insecurities and it is not helpful or healthy to hear criticism from others. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said when you had a more "pleasing" body years ago you were making everyone happy in a sense but internally you were not treating yourself well and were dealing with depression. I think this is so important to bring up because so many times it's celebrated when people see perhaps a slimmer body and it creates this idea that you could be dying inside but at least people are happy even if its at your expense. Very toxic indeed.

I hope you get better. Struggling with food myself and hating for myself for not being able to enjoy it has shown taught me that being skinny is not all that it's chalked up to be and that as long as people are eating healthily and exercising, it doesn't matter what they look like. All the best to you.

I have always admired your work as a blogger because you focus on taking action to make yourself comfortable, to take good care of yourself and to express yourself through fashion and home decor choices (no matter what your weight may be at any given time). I got a lot of praise when I lost a lot of weight, people would stare, and I liked it, at first. I had body-dysmorphia, and anorexia, but people told me I looked great, so I kept going, being very unwell. It took over a year before I suddenly realised I was not okay, at all, and I hated the attention I got. I have put weight back on, but I am very happy, doing really well, and frankly couldn't care less if people think I am pretty or not. I think you are beautiful as you are, Alix. As long as you are very, and when you say you are, you look it, radiate it. If you are happy in yourself, that is what matters. :)

Yep. The photo where my ribs are visible due to being a dancer and choosing to give up sweets and chocolate for a summer has the most 'wow' comments and likes. Makes you feel like everyone thinks you don't look good when you then go back to your usual dress size. Not sure how you cope with comments like this on the regular ♥️♥️

I never comment but was so hurt on your behalf when you talked about the comments you have received on your weight. I follow you in part for your style content even though we have very different body types, we all fluctuate so how it’s an issue to some I’ll never know. Your content is so thoughtful and well curated it’s so calming! Thank you for continuing to put yourself out there despite the negativity sent your way. A real example to those who would comment negatively 😘

Those commenters must not be seeing what I'm seeing because I feel like every time I see a picture of you on Instagram, my initial thought is almost always "man, she looks happy." Quickly followed up by, "what is she wearing and where can I buy one?" xx

I only just started following you recently but curiously I did it because I really liked your style and I liked that you look so happy sharing things with us. I wanted to learn and share this with you. I don’t know how you were, but who you are today is super cool. 👍

I think you look amazing, your style is on point as always. That linen shirt is 😍😍😍. Can relate to you - lost 10 kg due to stomach health issues and everyone praised me - but I was the most miserable I had been in my life. I wish people would choose to praise/compliment in ways that don't relate to the body - you are so brave/strong/interesting/cool/funny etc. Sending you lots of love 💕

This is so refreshing to hear. We have been so shamed during this lockdown. I felt bad each day for not following an online exercise programme. We were facing a pandemic yet what was in everyone's mind was "women are going to put on weight and this is not acceptable".

I’ve been thinking of trying clothes from Arket. These all look beautiful and great for summer. I think you’ve convinced me. Also, I’ve always considered you one of the most beautiful women I’ve seen, no matter what size you are. That doesn’t even matter. You’re gorgeous inside but also, you are a natural beauty on the outside. If I looked half as stunning as you without makeup on I’d be pretty high on life. Lol

I’ve gained weight during lockdown but I have to address some health issues (I couldn’t work for a month). Luckily I’m feeling better but I’m ok with my body. I am eating healthier but I’m not crazy to lose weight. The most important thing is how you feel, to take care of yourself and work with your inner self to be a better person. How you look doesn’t tell you the person you are ❤️
