Vertical Welding Repair.

Hey guys, Here is a repair that definitely gave me a quick refresher on vertical welding. This crane suffered from the columns cracking the welds because of the uneven terrain they have to go through on a daily basis. Kick back for a few moments and see if you pick up any pointers. There's few real masters of their trade that work, make the time to video, edit, explain, and isn't afraid to show their mistakes like IC Weld does for all of us. I'm a retired sheet metal worker. 30 years. I had my master's license for the last 20 years. I could never find the time to do everything it takes to make really good videos like IC Weld. My father was a rig welder,he was taught by my grandad in the Texas oil fields.(Grandpa had a shop in George West ) . I was his helper on pipelines in the 70s -80s as that is what we did follow those pipelines .Dad taught me a lesson about welding magnetic pipe.That was to wrap the ground around the pipe when you strike an arc it will neutralize the field ,depending on which direction and which joint was magnetic . Stick rod is All you use on a pipeline. 6010,7010,8010 ALL DOWN HILL AS PRODUCTION IS THE NAME OF THE GAME ...7DAYS A WEEK 12+ HRS A DAY.. NOW ON LAY BARGES THEY WOULD USE SUB ARC . THAT IS A TOTALLY DIFFERENT THING ... HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY NEW YEAR GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES

“It ain’t gonna get done by lookin at it!” Love that Isaac! 30’ of Flux core for Heavy Industrial use should shut up all the KZbin welding “experts” that constantly dismiss Flux Core as only for hobbyists or non-structural welding applications.

your getting confused with self shielding wire, flux cored just refers to a centre fill, theres rutile, basic limestone flux or pure metal core variety also. most these still need gas. self shield uses mostly lot zinc, hence strong white fume. gas shieled are still the premium but you just cant use them reliably outside, hence self shield is better then.

this looks like a rutile sand based self shield, got the slight kind purple slag and nice smooth ripples

Yep, he's using Hobart Fabshield 21B, flux core, no shielding gas. Said so right in the video.

Well i think it would not matter if it was 5ft or 50 ft watching a man with your skills do this job is more a pleasure than a chore you may find it surprising but im gonna hazard a guess more people have learnt how you do things by watching rather than being told or class room taught . That looks like a Texas sized batch plant off in the distance by the looks of all the cement silos. A lot of gouging. But on the bright side, if for some reason your vertical up practice was lagging behind, you're up to speed now brother! You get all the good jobs, plus you have a needle gun man....I am so jealous 🤣👍👌💪🔥🔥 Those cranes are probably at least 30 years old. At least any I have encountered were and they were beat up too. They live a hard life. Well done my friend

Very good repair to keep this iron producing. Looks like the original fabrication was wanting and, yeah, it's in rough work. Ideal conditions seldom exist in the real world. That's why you have a business. You keep them going. When is Junior going to start welding on the job? Once I started flux-core, everything else went by the wayside. It's expensive wire but it works so well outside and on old iron. Last summer, a wildfire claimed my beloved Bobcat, so I think my heavy welding days are over. Still have my wire feeds and plasma but torches and welder are all gone. Happy New Year to all with hopes of a healthy and prosperous new year. dave

I'm surprised there's no struts or bracing. Absolutely wild. This machine works great, in the perfectly flat world it was designed for. The kind of world with no friction, no air resistance and spherical cows. 😅

man, this takes me back to my days welding structural, minus the MIG. We always ran stick off the old Lincoln diesels. they took a second to spool up, unlike the Bobcat! I miss welding every day

At least it was all in a wide open area to get at though 😎👍 self shielding wire is by far faster than using SMAW, made the right choice there. Too bad you couldnt have this in a shop to use dual shield FCAW. Oh well! You made it happen as per usual, thanks for sharing and letting us be apart of it. Happy New Year to you and your family. Hey! Love watching this channel. I’m a little surprised that you did not preheat or maintain heat on this. I feel like it would have been a benefit using a weed burner to get started. Maybe I’m wrong. Great work and love the videos!

The material was thin enough to not need preheat. I usually dont preheat anything under 1/2". That plus welding vertically is usually a slower process. It's slow enough to build up heat as it goes.

Mi-jack travel lift. Have a few where I work and have been driving them for 24 years. Caused by the carne crab walking and twisting the crane do to poor yard maintenance especially when maxed out on lifting capacity

I had a very similar job recently and the piece was magnetized and maybe energized a bit. Couldn’t figure it out. It was spitting the puddle back out at me like blowing out a candle. Bad day in welding history.
