In order for the charger to work from a generator or an EV on board outlet, you need a neutral ground bonding plug. The charger is faulting because it's not detecting the ground and neutral being connected.

Just to tag on a little extra: some generators have a jumper wire that you can bond or unbound neutral to ground. And another side note: ordinary wall plugs have their neutral bonded to ground at the breaker box.

@@jimi272 idk where you live but in north america, UK, and Germany that I know of for sure, neutral and ground are usualy bonded in the main service panel. How do you think RCD's and GFCI fault interupting systems function. They are bonded so that current has a place to flow ONLY in the case of a fault, they flow to ground instead of through YOU. The RCD or GFCI detects the current mismatch after that main bonding point and trips if it detects current flow. Of course there are a few diffirent grounding configurations depending on the age of instalation and if it is residental or industrial. But that is usualy how residential installs work. That's also how appliances and things like EV chargers can detect a ground fault and trip out because the ground neutral bond is the only place it has to refrence that the ground is actually connected.

I had the same situation with no tow hook on our BMW X5 i40e. The tow truck had to use the same approach to pull it up onto the carrier. It also was a 2.5 hour wait for our tow truck to show up. Well, lesson learned: If you are being told by the EV that you need to charge and are near a charging station, go to the charging station, even if you only need a few miles. Don't put yourself in a bad situation unnecessarily. One additional reason to do that is, unfortunately, because of the unreliability of some charging stations. @jelloMohnny Жыл бұрын
Depends on how your EV calculates range. If it's algorithmic there should be no surprises. If you don't see much difference in your calculated range in summer vs winter, be extra careful. My EV is very conservative and I end up with more range than the estimate. Other EVs are the exact opposite - so you really need to understand how your car is calculating range for you.

Depends if your EV has a heat pump if so range loss is negligible
@erebostd
@erebostd Жыл бұрын
@@chidorirasenganz that’s just…well, not correct. Most heatpumps will work better than glowing wire when it’s not too cold outside, around 3-8 C. If it gets really cold, they fall back to traditional heating. The best thing to do is to preheat your car when it’s still plugged in. We have two EVs, one eith a heatpump, one without. With preheating at home or at the charger the difference is quite slim. But if you live in a spot where the temperature hovers a bit about freezing for longer periods, and you can’t preheati would invest in a heatpump if you need th3 range 👍
@chidorirasenganz
@chidorirasenganz Жыл бұрын
@@erebostd most of what you said doesn’t contradict what I said. I just stated that range loss isn’t very noticeable with a heat pump. Id still recommend preheating regardless if a EV has a resistive heater or a heat pump
@erebostd
@erebostd Жыл бұрын
@@chidorirasenganz I just wanted to lower expectations for people not into EVs. I too often see people recommending heat pumps as the solution for winter if you buy an EV, and that's not the case. In fact there were cases i recommend not getting one. Like one case where the owner drives basically no more than 60-70 miles a day all year round, and the heat pump would have costed 1200 bucks more. For that money he can charge for years, and the range he loses in winter are negligible, especially if he preheats in the morning. Heat pumps are great and shouldn't come as standard, no question. But since we are not there people should think if they need one, and they especially need to manage their expectations, they are no magical energy savers... that's all i wanted to say 😉👍

So many gas powered car drivers have gone through the same thing. You walk to the gas station to get gas in a can or have someone bring you some, and refill. Can’t do that with an EV but let’s not pretend only EV’s are subject to being drained. It’s ultimately up to the driver to plan accordingly. I’m sure it’s a learning curve when you change over to EV. @@samjam6989 no it wouldn't fluctuate, it would just burn up faster in cold weather. Same technology that tells you how much percentage your phone has left is simply what's in EV cars just on a bigger scale. There is no bad reading. EVs don't like cold weather, they'll just discharge faster while in their resting state. That's it. Please stop with your logic. It doesn't work. You'd park your EV outside, expecting that it'd discharge by 2 to 3%, and you come back and it discharged by 5%, that's user error because users are taught that the rate of discharge is increased as the temperature lowers and to always take preemptive measures, so if you don't take any measures, it isn't the car giving you a bad reading, it's you not taking precautions to prevent the discharge. The rate of discharge is even accelerated once the consumption begins and the vehicle is in motion, so if you don't have a home charger and you parked home with 15%, you may be arriving at the charging station with less than 5% if it's within 20 minutes of your starting destination.

Stuck at a Chademo for 3 hours because we couldn't get the plug to release. New to EVs and thought it was the 12v. Ran that battery across the street to a auto parts store, but it checked out just fine. It was well over 110* F outside, let me tell you that was physically challenging. The charge station people were sending someone out and they showed up 2 or 3 hours later. But we had gotten the plug to release by running in and buying 2 metal nail files and were able to pry the button into the release position. Can't allow the chademo cable to pull on the plug at all or it doesn't release correctly. Been trapped 3 or 4 times. I spent an hour at a charge station examining it's operation and playing with tools to aid in releasing that button. Nail files, small screwdrivers, would work but we now keep an IC puller in the glove box.

She is going to run it out of juice again if she doesn't find some way to do Level 2 charging at home, especially if the garage is cold. It just takes too much power to heat up the batteries enough and power all the computers for them to accept a charge below 0C. When the tow driver finally came, he explained that AAA doesn't actually pay attention to your location and uses your membership address' zip code as reference. If you go down within your county, you're good. But if you go down outside the county, AAA takes your location and applies your membership zip code to it, rather than the actual zip code you're in. This ends up sending tows out to places that don't exist or obviously aren't where you are. This is a common problem with AAA and apparently they simply won't fix it or acknowledge it.

hi I found a owner manual for the 2023 ID4 online and it states that if the car has no rear tow hitch it has a fixed tow eye on the left side under the bumper cover but if it has the factory installed hitch you have to use the tow hitch with the ball receiver that is not provided with the car I think but it shows the screw tow eye included in the emergency kit but not 100 % sure that it's there is the hitch is installed and I did not see in the owner book if there is a cover on the front bumper to install the tow eye if its not there it's not very smart move from Volkswagen to remove this item from the car.

Kyle, On my R1T, if I plug in my Zero Motorcycle charger into the Rivian plugs, I get the same Red indicator (even when not plugged into the Zero on the other side). I notice that the plug circuit on the R1T reports as an open ground (not sure if that is the issue). I would love to know more about using the R1T's 110 plugs for emergency EV v2v charging.

Wow! I'm a new ID.4 owner (day 9) and I got down to 5% earlier today heading home after my first road trip. Thank God I made it. Nevertheless, because my level 2 home charger has not been installed, I'm at a ChargePoint DC fast charger after my bedtime to make sure that I'm ready to roll in the morning. This is the part of EV ownership that I don't like and hopefully my level 2 will help with this and maybe moving to a larger market. Thanks for sharing a scary, yet happy ending story 🤓😇

Bjorn Nyland did similar tests... When u deplete your battery deep into reserve... so far, that it doesnt move anymore, you need at least 2-3 kwh charge before it starts to moves again... your 1.5 hours at 0.8 kW charging is not enough for that.... he had mobile extra battery pack with 4 kWh capacity with him for this test.... and this pack was quite empty before the VW did move again..... --> you probably needed another 1.5 hours charging from the rivian to revive the id.4

Pro tip: vehicle manufacturer roadside assistance use the same local towing contractors that AAA does. If she hit the SOS button, she’d likely have waited just as long. I used to work for a towing company. Most of our calls were AAA, but we also got a bunch from insurance companies and vehicle manufacturers roadside assistance. Sometimes you’re actually better off calling a towing company directly and asking if they take AAA rather than calling the AAA dispatch. That said, after midnight, you’re not likely to get a quick service call from anyone unless you’re in a big city. The only time I’ve run out of electricity was in a similar situation. I was on the way back from a road trip. Went through a section where it was insanely windy, dropped about 0.5mi/kWh on that stretch and ran out of electricity about half a mile from the fast charger. I made it off the freeway and up the off-ramp, but it was uphill through a very busy intersection to get to the charger and I was by myself. Had to wait about 2 hours for a tow truck to make it 0.5 miles to the charger. It would be ironic if a German car has no way for a tow truck to hook up to it, since that is kind of a critical feature for them. I’m assuming you looked at the owners manual?

How far are you? I have definitely gotten out of some of my cars and pushed them at times when I had similar issues. Couldn't you have tied the tow strap to the lower control arm on the ID4 before the tow truck came? You only needed to go 5 mph down to Ed Carroll VW. You were fortunate that you didn't loose the 12V. I've rescued dead EV's where the hazard lights had run down the 12V. It really helps to have one of the portable 12V jumpstarting lithium batteries, just so you can turn it on and start charging after it's been towed to a charger.

I have driven pickups my whole life and only ran out of gas once or twice and that was on an 82 GMC with a broken fuel gauge. When I first moved here to the East coast, I was driving a lifted RAM 1500, never had any issues with that truck. I came across an older woman with a gas powered car that had run out of fuel, she was only half a mile from the nearest gas station, so I picked up her up and brought her to the gas station. I had a gas can in my truck from the recent trip I took myself. After getting fuel I brought her back to her car, I filled it for her, and then she drove off to the gas station to fill up. This happens to everyone at least once in your life, you just have to be mindful of the capabilities of your vehicle. The car I drive now, I've driven so low to the point where the instrument cluster was only showing 9 miles of range left. I was on my way to the gas station that was 3 miles away and I wasn't even remotely worried that I wouldn't make it. I don't push that hard all of the time, but I know my car's capabilities, I know the range, and I know when I need fuel. Still, I find it extremely concerning that there is no recovery point on this ID.4, if it did have a tow point and towing eye, you could have pulled it to the charger and you guys would have been done in less than an hour and a half.
