I flew into Johnson creek in the end of August 1992, woke up the next morning and Salmon had come up Johnson Creek, it was amazing. Thinking that they were 700 miles from the ocean and at almost 5000 foot elevation. Insane

I grew up in Redding, took my first flying lessons at Benton. Sure don't miss the fires every summer lol. Great video man!

I want to go to Johnson’s Creek. I learned to fly at Benton and KRDD. There was still a dump on the south end of Benton when I was there. My dad still lives in Redding but he sold his plane long ago but I just bought one that was on the line with my dads old plane, numbers are similar. We now live in Ohio and my family would want to take their horses, the logistics of getting truck trailer with water, heat and ac (talk about glamping) there and the plane are daunting. I think my daughter will figure it out. It will involve me driving and flying 24/7 she will not mind. The kids want to ride in the mountains and I want to land on those nice grass runways, I can’t do much back country, I have a 2 bladed Arrow. It was good seeing Benton and Redding and your trip looked real fun.

Was good to see this trip of yours, really miss flying there on summer vacations back in the 80's. Trying to convince a coworker to fly out there for a day trip.

Johnson Creek, a great place to camp (Actually Backcountry Glamping). Has all the essentials, hot showers, electricity for recharging electronics, coffee, chopped firewood, long runway. Great last stop before heading home after camping in Moose Creek or Schaefer Meadows (my fav). These are primitive camping but wonderful and less crowded. Flying B and Sulfur Creek have awesome fly-in breakfast. Have not been back to the newly built Big Creek for breakfast since it burned down so couldn’t comment. Idaho is no doubt the best backcountry fly-in camping in the US. Love the annual trips.

No doubt an incredible area to explore! I've been to Sulphur Creek several times, but this was my first trip to Flying B.

How comfortable was Johnson Creek in the PA28-180? Would love to see a video on how you have the plane set up. I have a 140 that I am putting Hoerner tips, VGs, gap seals and PowerFlow exhaust on. Will be fun to see what ID strips are within reach!
@bhendo443 жыл бұрын
The 180 does great in Idaho! I'm able to load it up with camping gear and still be well below max gross. I do like to keep my fuel below half tanks typically, though. The DA can get pretty high in the summer.
@Captndarty Жыл бұрын
I was there in late June and saw a 235 likely fully loaded take up half the runway. Not what I would’ve expected. DA and tail wind takeoffs are a thing. The one good thing bay least at JC is once you clear the trees you can follow the stream and climb at 100fpm if you have to.

Awesome, but i would be afraid of an engine failure out there.... wouldnt a lighter plane with a chute help in those situations?

We are gonna fly there in about 2 months? If the weather will be good, when do you recommend? When the temp is fine and the weather is clear and the grass is green! Flying there in a cessna 140! Also, we live at the sunrise skypark! Where your friend lives!
@bhendo442 жыл бұрын
Oh that’s cool that you live so close to the Idaho back country! We just got back from another trip to Johnson Creek this week, end of July, and it was great as always, but next time I might go earlier or later in the summer. It was quite warm during the day, and there were more bugs than we normally see. One plus was that it didn’t get as cold at night. Let me know how your trip goes!

Saw you you had wheel pants on the the nose wheel - did you take off the ones for the mains? I have a 235 and this is on my bucket list - but I'm just a new PPL, so may wait a little bit :)
@bhendo442 жыл бұрын
One of the other Cherokee’s in our group had the nose wheel pant on, and I had all 3 off. I decided to put them back on for my trip this year, though, to prevent any rocks from getting kicked into the bottom of my flaps. Hope you try the back country some time!
