I just love that clip at 1:57 It's really well done effects wise, and is a great example of the power of hand phasers.

The Federation universe is a pretty hostile place even up to the time of NG. I think even in UPF society especially in the early days public opinion would strongly support a unified army.

I feel obliged to point out another weapons list as well as a pre Federation army that was a part of Starfleet and existed till at least Kirk's time. "7 metric tons of ultritium explosives, 8 tetryon pulse launchers, 7 isomagnetic disintegrators" Then there's the MACOs. Which it's been suggested Colonel West was part of a Starfleet marine corps which was an evolved form of the MACO
@richardched60856 жыл бұрын
+bemasaberwyn55 Correct! The MACOs were equipped with Phased Plasma Rifles (Since they are referred to as both Plasma and Phase Weapons) and can Fire Shots powerful enough to Dig a Clean Burned Hole around 5 Inches in Diameter through the Augment Body and cause Phase Pulse Infections that are particularly lethal to Andorians.

I have been exploring this concept for a while, and the problem is one of practicality. Its a political as well a question of the security of the federation. Think about when the founding members of the federation sat down and discussed matters of security. Knowing what who their neighbors are, one who view war as a sport ( Klingons) how could the UPF not come to the conclusion that they don’t need a standing army.
@andrewworley44017 жыл бұрын
You forgot Phaser Rifles used in First Contact and throughout the Dominion War.
@mdurwin Жыл бұрын
You don’t have a standing army if you have to ask to raise one. Perhaps they’ve evolved to the point that explorers are trained in military tactics so they can be called upon to defend the planet. Just because they can fight, doesn’t mean they’re a fighting force.
@Idazmi7 Жыл бұрын
Context: The Federation has armies. *Earth* doesn't. Thanks to the Prime Directive, the Federation's military command needed to ask Earth's permission to allow armies on the planet. This is made clear in the episode, explicitly.
@jeffreybischoff67725 жыл бұрын
Starfleet would be more like an interstellar Navy/Coast hybrid force for the Federation of Planets. MACO would be more like an interstellar Army/Marine Corp/National Guard hybrid force for the Federation of Planets.

Obviously, phasers aren't "harmless" to the target being shot. When I said "Harmlessly disperse" I meant harmless to everything else. Chekov wasn't harmed by Terrell killing himself right next to him.

I always wondered what Weapons the Gorn used to obliterate the Cestus III Colony. The leader said they used "Phasers only worse." Yet managed to transmit pleas for mercy and survive what should have been more than enough to wipe the Colony off the map instantaneously. Yet the Gorn saw fit to deploy forces armed with Disruptors and Mortar Launchers (Powerful enough to make Spock's ear ring for the rest of his life). Maybe that was to test Starfleet's ground Force capabilities as the Gorn did fake a message and set up the Battle with Kirk and party. But what did they destroy the colony with? Ground equipment or Starship Bombardment?
@Idazmi72 жыл бұрын
Probably a bit of both. I'm sure the colony was shielded, and in that case they used an initial bombardment to deplete the shield, then landed troops to wipe out the colonists on the ground and fake the message to Enterprise. "Like phasers, only worse" was probably referening whatever the Gorn used for handguns - likely a phaser designed with less ethical concern.

You left out Phaser Rifles like Kirk used in The Second Pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before". They are more powerful than hand phasers. The Old Phaser one was fitted onto the handle of the Phaser two and acted like a power pack when fitted. Phaser ones don't look like guns so they are carried inconspicuously, even though they have less power and effect that way. In "The Omega Glory", the rogue Captain says he and the Cohms killed thousands of Yangs and drained several power packs doing it. Trelayne said a hand phaser could kill Millions.

***** I actually really enjoy Voyager and Enterprise. I can really tell it wasn't as well thought out as everything else but i'm equally capable of marathoning each series just for the hell of it. I did also enjoy the TNG movies as well. I would rank them at 1. First Contact. 2. Nemesis .3. Insurrection. 4. Generations. The JJ movies aren't too bad either. I cringe at the horrible representation of Star Trek Technology, but since i'm a fan of Michael Bay's Transformers, this is to be expected (i'm easily impressed). As for the original movie series, Some I like some I don't. I'd rank them at. 1. Undiscovered Country. 2 Wrath of Khan. 3. The Motion Picture. 4. The Search for Spock. 5. The Voyage Home. 6. The Final Frontier. I really hate The Final Frontier. Out of all of the movies and television shows, it's the only one I truly hate.

gotcha so in that old Star Wars VS Star Trek comparison. That's probably where Star Wars would give the Federation Serious issues since they got a huge array of ground weapons and types and maybe I just haven't noticed but it seems like Star Trek has yet to come up with an answer to the Force user's Lightsaber. Something only the most elite Star Wars non Jedi or Sith is good at beating. Ever think of the outcome if the 2 sides were to join forces. Like maybe Starfleet helping the Republic take on the Yugon Vaghn (I'm sure I probably butchered that sorry) or maybe a contingent of Jedi and an elite group of Republic Commandos helping beat back the Borg?? That'd be an interesting alternate timeline inter franchise crossover.
