Idea Gear Indicator- A $35 Miracle for Honda CB300F

I wanted a gear indicator but didn't want to pay the high price for a GI Pro DS-series indicator $200+ canadian dollars. I found the following IDEA brand gear indicator for about 18% of the cost of a GI Pro!

Have a look at the displays and you will see that there is no different between the cheaper units and others. Same indicator box, same electronics and very likely all made in the same place with the same parts. Some get there company wording etc added but in the end they are all the same. Search and choose wisely.

This is the reason I didn't purchase the gear indicator from eBay, being afraid of not damaging my ECU but I think you are right, it is the same product, only cheaper. I watched onecolektiv's video on the more expensive gear indicator and it works really well, like a factory gear indicator that this bike should have included. It's much faster, very bright, and shows the gear number constantly without that "thinking" dash line on the cheaper one. Definitely not worth $200, maybe 80 at the most is what I would pay for it. I'm going for the cheaper one you have on AliExpress when my CB250R arrives.

I found out how to program this but start this on atleast 3 blocks of straight road to ride without stopping: Put the bike first in neutral- once you have it plugged into the ecu turn on the over- Hit the kill switch of your bike to on- The indicator should say L- Start your bike and from a stop shift into 1st- Let go of the clutch and ride in 1st gear while its flashing the number 1- It will then flash into a small letter N- When it does that IMMEDIATELY SHIFT into 2ND GEAR- ride in 2nd gear until its done flashing and turns from a number 2 to a small letter N- Then shift into 3rd and ride in 3rd gear until its done flashing and turns to a small letter N- Keep doing this all the way through until 6th gear these same steps and once you get to 6th gear ride out the gear till its a solid 6 and its not flashin a number 6. Then it will be program and done :) if you mess up while trying to do this and you get stuck at a stop sign or red light. Pull over and turn off the bike. Turn the key over and hit the kill switch on and then off about 6-7 times until it starts with the letter L. Then you can try to program the gears again. The programming must be done without stopping from 1st-6th gear :)

I bought the cheaper one and installed it with your video in mind. It was only 20 bucks and works great like you said. I believe the Idea brand uses the same module as all the other Chinese sellers of this product. For those getting the metal bracket mount, keep in mind the cutout for the wire is not low enough to keep the unit flush with the front of the bracket. I had to grind it down manually with a file (going to buy a Dremel after that experience) and put some padding on the back of it to push it flush with the front of the bracket. Anyways, if you don't care about the extra features of the Healtech version, definitely get this cheaper indicator. I wish it did show the gear change when you change it and not after you release the clutch (a "ー" appears whenever you hold down the clutch). However, I believe the Healtech is not able to do this as well.

If I understand you right, yes it needs to be above idle, More importantly I believe you have to be moving in order for it to show what gear you are in.

My question is does it detect when you are stopping and if for some reason you drop like 2 or 3 gears while still holding the clutch will it go to the correct gear?

Yes it will detect the stop and dropping gears with the clutch depressed. It won't actually show the gear until the clutch is pulled out and the gear is engaged. At a stop it simply shows a dash line -

I need some help. i connected mine on my cbr 600 F3 from 98. It does blink L slowly but not fast when i start the engine. when i have the wheel off the ground and engage first gear the indicator circles and thats it. any help? Green wire is not connected cant find where to get my neutral from could this be the issue?

G Francis Not really. Remember its one big panel. The clips and velcro make it feel really stuck. Just double check all bolts are out before you pull. I started pulling from the front section and finished removing toward to rear. Pay attention to how the rear area inserts as it overlaps with a panel and when putting it back in you need to do the reverse for a proper fit.

My dad’s Honda cb300f goes 77-83 mph max in the way it came from the store and I see some cb300f’s hitting 90+ on KZbin. Do you think it’s cause I got to upgrade some aspects or do you think my dad asked them to restrict the motorcycles speed through the electronics if that’s possible? (When he got it, he knew we were going to ride it)

Mine can also go 80 plus miles per hour. I think to go faster some people change the sprocket sizes. In your case this is what somebody might have done if this was a used CB300F. If for example, you decreased the rear sprocket you would lower your top end speed. There may be some other electronic wizardry that someone else could do but I don't know about that.

I got one for my crf250l and it has different plugs than yours and also an individual wire that looks like it would need to be spliced in somewhere. Not comfortable with cuting up wires in my bike so I'll probably just return it.

Does anyone have a 2017 honda Grom ? I don't know if my indicator is faulty or I'm missing something. First of all, as soon as I turn it on, it goes through the 6,5,4,3,2,1 like in the video, but doesn't flash slowly, instead it flashes fast as if I've started the bike.. And even when the bike is still not started, it'll ask for the first gear, and get stuck there flashing in first gear learning mode. Now I thought that if I turn the bike on and try putting it in first gear, it would work, but it doesn't. It stays stuck in first gear forever, no matter how much I rev it, drive it, etc...

It's a nice gadget but in my opinion electronics on bikes make people stupid, uneducated and lazy. I always know in what gear I'm in, it's like a brain exercise for example I'm in the 6th gear and I down shift 2 gears so I know. And also I know by the sound of the engine compared to the speed of the bike.

Definitely not a necessity to have a gear indicator. I agree that going by the sound is also a valid method to know your gearing.
