When we heard that Chevrolet was going to build a naturally aspirated V8 that pumped out 670 HP... we thought they were joking.
Well, the joke is on us, because the LT6 V8 in the Z06 Corvette is dominating the supercar space.

One thing's for sure... the ZR1 will need forced induction, and a different engine, to top those numbers. Like the 7.0L that debuted in 2003... this engine simply won't tolerate much in the way of power adders. The fatigue life of titanium connecting rods, simply won't stand it for 100,000 miles. If they drop the rods, that means they'll have to revert to a crossplane crank, because the flat plane crack can't swing that much mass and survive. That also means less RPM, and more displacement, just to hit the LT's baseline. So it will definitely need forced induction for anything more. I'm more curious about the Z06. Traditionally, Z06 was basically just a road-legal lightening package... where they took the light body variant, ditched any unnecessary fluff, and gave it the best performing powerplant with a hotter cam. I doubt there's any headroom for a cam upgrade to the LT... and short of ditching the infotainment center and floormats... I don't think there's much they can do to make it lighter, and still pass safety requirements. So is this really a Z06 at all... or another fake play on an old nameplate?

I say this as someone who isn't a GM fanboy. This car is amazing in every way, including the styling. I wouldn't feel short changed owning one of these versus any other super car out there. I do like the Ferrari styling the most out of any of the mid-engine cars, but they're notoriously unreliable. With this you get the performance, you get the cheaper price and you get the GM reliability and parts support. I say this understanding that an engine replacement would be catastrophically expensive, but then again it wouldn't be such a special car otherwise. Similar equation with the GT350 from Ford. That VooDoo engine and the sound it makes, makes it worth every penny they charged for that car and then some.

I was a project engineer at GM when they started developing the LT6 (wasn't on the project itself, was working on a truck engine). It was great seeing the block and heads working through the prototype machine shop. And yes, in the competitive analysis lab, there was a Ferrari 458 engine torn down. But this is nothing to get excited about. Every engine manufacturer buys their competitors engines to study. And yet I doubt that Ferrari has felt the need to buy one of GM's pushrod truck engines. After all, they're not in that market.

nonsense...is like saying that using a turbo today means copying from who invented the turbo before 1900. Do you think there is much in common between early Cadillac flat planes and a 458 engine? There is definitely way more which GM learnt from opening up a 458 engine bought in Poland than the resemblance between a modern flat plane engine and GM's early designs. I dont think you want to start talking about patents from Otto, Benz and Daimer right? If today a z06 is using ESC do you say it copied Mercedes Benz from the 80s?

The C8 actually rides on the same platform as three of its predecessors (C5, C6, and C7), just the engine layout changed. It's not an all-new design, nor is the Z06's 5.5L engine a clean-sheet like the video says. Push rod engines can rev high proof nascar there small block based V8s can rev to 10,000 rpm , it comes down to what kind of camshaft lifters and rocker arms like an flattop camshaft can rev to 7,000 rpm but struggles on the other hand hydraulic roller camshafts can rev higher with ease it also comes down to other stuff like the weight of the valve train ,rotating assembly and flywheel. There’s some dohc engines that can’t rev higher then 6,400 rpm and can’t go higher then 6,900 and 7,000 and they have dohc 👀

They can rev high but you lose power down low. What’s the highest revving production pushrod? The DOHC with cam phasers on each and variable lift on the cams can make an engine that makes power at a much wider rev range. I’d totally rock an LS7 or LS3 so I’m no hater.

A pushrod engine with the same deck height of the 5.5L LT6 V8 is basically a big block. To be fair, a big block of the same height would be a tad longer. Shortly after the LT6, Chevy released an aftermarket 10L (610? ci) big block that does 1100 HP on E85 or perhaps 750+ HP with a milder tune. Given the same deck height, the OVH engine offers greater displacement and max power at lower RPM, the OHC engine is smaller & revs higher.

Agreed and many other intakes used similar designs I think they old hilborn could be included and the butterflys date back to the late 80s and early 90s too. In fact one of them was the 1989 Ford SHO had a 220 horse 3 liter six with 12 "tuned" intake runners. Six longer narrow set of primaries for low end torque and at about 4k rpm the butterflies opened up a second set of short fat tubes for high rpm volume. You could literally bury the 8k tach but the cable shifter was atrocious. Just saying there new tech has been around for awhile but pump it up for the buyers the drivers know what's what. Meh

There's not any "old Ford technology" in the LT6...thank God! The Modular/Coyote/Voodoo engine designs are terrible from a performance standpoint, they have to use superchargers to get any HP. The basic design flaw is they kept the bore spacing of the OHV small block Ford engine. Once they made that decision in the '80s, all future engines were handicapped for performance applications. The Voodoo engine is horrible because the stroke is too long, a dimension driven by the decision to use the narrow bore centers of the old small block Ford OHV engine. They should have made the bore as large as possible within the bore center constraints and let the displacement be determined by the use of a stroke no longer than 3.1".

I have a weird feeling that it destroys the competition, because there simply is no modern competition. The age of such engines was late 2000s to early 2010s, nowadays, there's just no way these would even get homologated (and sold) in anywhere else than northern us, which is a really small market all things considered and thus there are no profits to be made if any competition starts arising.

90 degree cranks do not fire at quicker intervals. There's no torque difference because of crank degree. The difference is which bank fires every 90 degrees. In a 90 degree crank, the firing order resembles this side-to-side LRLLRLRR -- each interval happening at 90 degrees. In a 180 degree cranks, the firing order side-to-side is like this: LRLRLRLR -- each interval still firing every 90 degrees because each 90 degrees your flat plane rotates, it puts two pistons at TDC in the other cylinder bank (because that bank is at 90 degrees from the other). The main difference in torque lies with the fact that, without the inherent imbalance of the flat plane crank, most 90 degree cranks have a longer stroke. Longer stroke means the cranking force produced by the cylinder pressure is further away from the crank's center, thus using that leverage to increase torque at the crank.

Do short runs. Let it warm up good and keep the rpms on the move. Be gentle until the oil is hot. The idea is to build cylinder pressure that will seat the piston rings. Hills are great. Don't be afraid to work it out and run it through the gears. Don't be too gentle when it's warmed up and avoid sitting in traffic. Avoid continuous engine speed and idling. Work it progressively harder until youre at 600mi, then give it a full send to the redline in as many gears as you can. Change the oil after this run then you're good. I've done this with many new vehicles and none have burned oil or had any problems.

While we always say it’s half the price of an exotic car, a lot of that is because they can get that money. $120k is a boatload of money for a Corvette, especially when few people can tell, or know, the difference between a $60k Corvette and this one. That’s always been an issue with the true badass Corvettes. Doesn’t matter with a Ferrari or Lamborghini. The Shelby Gt350 engine is more impressive, one for being first and two for putting a badass 1 off engine in a low production $55k car. I like that they did a flat plane crank tho. Hi revs just sound cool. This one doesn’t sound anything like the Shelby, hell, it doesn’t sound much like an Italian car either. Im glad it has its own sound.

I had a C5 Z06 and a C6 Z06 in the past, phenomenal cars and loads of fun for the $ 👍🏻 The C8 Z06 is a a great performer but unfortunately out of my price range today. Zora always wanted a mid engined corvette, and they definitely made a great platform 👍🏻
