I've been reading a book called The 5 Stages of Collapse, by Dmitry Orlov. Over the last decade I have read several books in this niche and this is one of the most dense but entertaining reads on the subject. While the topic is tough to think about for most people, it is a subject that is worth investing a little bit of time into, in my opinion, because no civilization has ever lasted forever. While I do not believe that collapse can be predicted or forecast, reading a book like this can help you to understand the fragility that is baked into our western world and then translate that into a probabilistic map that will allow you to properly insure yourself. By insure, I don't mean through a large insurance company, I mean approaches like I have detailed out in the Land As Insurance series.
vergepermacult...
There is a problem with engaging this topic. It can lead to paralysis, obsessivness and inaction because it is scary. If you are prone to this then you may want to broach this subject carefully. As an engineer we are constantly assessing the risk of systems and then creating designed responses to those risks. This is just one more risk to think about and permaculture gives us an approach to manage this risk so that we can move on with our lives in a positive way.

I have an autographed copy of Dmitry's "The Five Stages of Collapse..." It's an outstanding read. When the book arrived in the mail, I was unable to put it down (unless practically forced). It is THAT informative and interesting. What Dmitry discusses in the book is super-useful-he offers ideas on what one might expect to observe and experience as the U.S. continues its accelerating downward spiral... Believe it or not, I didn't find the book depressing at all! Reading it actually gave me a boost-reducing some of the uncertainty I had about preparing my family-and building resilience. The book is definitely a gift... Anyway, love Dmitry Orlov's work! Thank you for having him on your show!! Always a treat to hear his thoughts.... Orlov is brain candy (for the "End Times!")

If I had to describe the Soviet and post-Soviet conditions in one word, it would be "unfinished". That is, no landscaping, streets and alleys and parking would be not paved or in decent condition, blocks of flats would be, well, ratty-looking, in need of tuckpointing, and so on. But the trams and trolleybuses ran, were clean and reliable, the metro was excellent. Once you got in your flat, it was a different world. You had what you needed, your small fridge was full and like a "gastronom" (sort of a delicatessen).

@@VergePermaculture Off the top of my head I guess something like tackling common misunderstandings and tropes around the author's field; more examples or scenarios... "here people did this and that happened"; introducing more structure, announcing key concepts. More educational I guess. Not all of these at once, it would get too dense then, just trying to come up with some suggestions. On the topic of concepts check out github.com/akaleeroy/collapse-lingo Right now it's a terrible rough draft but if the word gets out interested contributors can help make it better!

His point about women being 'liberated' by having to work in employments was shockingly simplistic. He seems to think that the old system of having women in the home/caring for kids/elderly was preferable. In fact women always worked outside the home to help the economic stability of the household. Women will never be liberated until the men are liberated - from the idea that home/caring/income is a mutual enterprise. And let's face it, multi-generational living doesn't suit everyone. Abuse happens in these households too.

This guy thinks differently! But he is very biased due to his Russian origins. Honestly, Russia (in 2023) is more likely to collapse again before the world collapses. Also he worries about negative black swans but discounts positive black swans which can solve big problems the world is facing.
