That chart though! Pure gold. I'd make multiple copies and get them laminated, incase I spill my golden rooibos masala, turmeric chai latte, or cranberry blood orange tea on it in a "eureka!" moment. In the meanwhile, a library of reference books covering all sorts of gems and minerals from the known to the forgotten or strangely named will do. 🤔

Great video (as always). Very informative. As a gem cutter, I like to know what I'm buying/cutting and that has not always been the case. I definitely don't want to get stiffed with a Spinel when I've been sold a "Sapphire" !~ I recently purchased a Polariscope and a Refractometer (among other tools) and just acquired 6th Edition of "Gem Identification Made Easy" by Antoinette Matlins to help me along the way. In fact, I attended an online seminar with her as the guest speaker only 2 weeks ago. It definitely can be mind boggling but gemology is very interesting to me especially now that I'm learning how to properly identify different minerals with some confidence. Your videos have been very helpful and for that I thank you. 🙂

Great video again. Love the educational content! When you got out the chart I was wondering if Gem identification from a given set of properties would be something that an LLM (Large language model) is good at. So I fed all the properties and observations into a prompt and surprisingly the AI got 2/3 correct. For the first stone it guessed Blue spinel which was correct. For the second stone the AI guessed Pezzottaite which is wrong since the RI doesn't match. I changed the color from Raspberry to light red and the result was Pyrope Garnet. The RI and the singly refractiveness would match this stone. I rephrased the prompt and the AI changed to Spinel. For the third stone the AI guessed Spinel immediately again. Of course those LLM guesses are not reliable, but still interesting to see the result :D

Definitely an interesting experiment. The real challenge though is getting the data in the first place i'd say. Because of all the lenses involved in testing, even to get the overlay footage for this video took ages. Theres the macro lens on my camera, and getting that to focus correctly with the lenses in the refractometer and polariscope... downright beastly. The technological gap (especially for cost of making the instruments) will likely keep gemologists relevant for a long time to come.

You said garnets don't flouresce. That is incorrect. There are some garnets found that do flouresce. A commercial name of one type is Dragon Garnet, but there are a number of other garnets that do flouresce.
@phoenixadams9962Ай бұрын
Tsavorite garnet fluoresces.
@GemologyforSchmucksАй бұрын
Thanks for the correction - my statement was an overgeneralization. It would have been more accurate for me to say that almandine garnets do not fluoresce due to their iron content. I'll look for samples and hope to revisit this topic in a new video in the future.
@GemologyforSchmucksАй бұрын
Some tsavorite (grossular garnet) may fluoresce, yes. Thanks for pointing this out.

I was taught that an RI reading should be taken to three decimal places. It also seems that you don't use the monochromatic sodium light with your refractometer. Anyways, great educational videos! 👍 Keep posting them!
@GemologyforSchmucksАй бұрын
If one can manage that level of accuracy, its definitely desireable. Some stones have such small birefringence that it would be necessary/ extremely helpful in some contexts. Correct on the sodium light filter - I have one, but haven't found it to be strictly necessary for most identification, so it typically gets neglected.

Thank you - and yes, you're correct. My phrasing was over-general as I was speaking to almandine (iron bearing) garnets in this context. Some of our other community members also mentioned tsavorite (grossular garnet) fluorescing. I'll likely need to do a follow up video soon to correct the misunderstanding. Cheers
