Please, make video explaining cut quality where the facets are misaligned (corners not met) from small to large misalignments and the effects this caused to the look of the gem.

My Gem dealer uses this term “for the lot”, what does that mean?
@GemologyforSchmucks19 сағат бұрын
Typically they're quoting a price for the entire collection of gems they're offering. If you were to choose less pieces, they'll often quote a higher price "for selection."
@KellyPhelps-t4y15 сағат бұрын
@ so if I’m looking to purchase a 2ct sapphire out of a 25ct lot, that’s considered one stone but the whole lot would be the extra 25cts?

@ makes total sense. Thank you,
@GemologyforSchmucks13 сағат бұрын
@@KellyPhelps-t4y The whole lot would be 25 carats, correct. There is no standard on how big the lot is. It just means "all stones" in a given package.

Thank you so much for this. I have followed your advice and tried out a couple of lab reports from different labs. Thus far my best score on a lab report was seeing "orangy pink" in the description of a sapphire I purchased that was described as light pink by the seller.

Fantastic information. You have a great job. I wonder if you might answer a question please. I have what I thought was a Citrine. Someone told me it could be a synthetic yellow sapphire, but when I hold it under UV light, it fluoreces bright red. After looking on the internet, it looks like it could be a Scapolite! Would you be able to give me an insight as to what the stone might be? Thank you and love all your videos.

Speaking as a current Gemmology student at a college in Canada: Yes, often (but definitely not always)you can identify a set gem stone. It does to a large degree depend on how it is set. For example, bezel setting would make identifying difficult (often cannot tell if the stone is a composite doublet or triple, as you can’t look for the glue line easily as that tends to be close to the girdle and also cannot use submission method, Refractol). If the stone is set high, refractometer can be used. If the back is open, spectroscope can also be used.
@GemologyforSchmucks6 күн бұрын
Context is definitely important, yes. I think its part of what we need to do as gem enthusiasts to help people see what is possible, and when we need to say "I don't know", because that is FAR better than leading folk astray with guesses.
@austinfreyrikrw66516 күн бұрын
@@GemologyforSchmucksFor sure…also for legal liability. You do not want to get it wrong and have the person sue you later. Always make it clear it is your professional *opinion* that this stone is likely an ABC due to whatever test results. If not conclusive, refer out. 😅

@@ColeenCreeden That's mostly correct. Being under a lens however makes it more stressful XD Plato I believe it was, pushed back against the written word being introduced to Greece, because the writer of the word couldn't be challenged directly, nor could defend themselves based on what was frozen in time. I've read about Japanese temple carpenters that get upset at their understudies for essentially the same thing. "In a thousand years, someone will judge me because of this... and I won't be there to explain it all" Indeed it is a punishing (and also rewarding and wholesome) undertaking to create. Thanks for your great videos! All other things being equal, how much do meet points factor into the stone's value? If it is cut well with no windowing or extinction but the meet points are off, how much does that matter?
@GemologyforSchmucks16 күн бұрын
@@AdamKlaum great question, and it will really come down to the client in question. As long as the polish is good (because this DOES have an obvious impact on luster and potentially colour) then meet points are in some ways an obsession for a select group.

@GemologyforSchmucks27 күн бұрын
I appreciate your kind words. Each school definitely has their own flavour and protocol. The other reading materials would depend on which stones you want to dive into deeply. Most people in the market don't actually have a deep understanding about a large array of stones. Some actually may only know a lot about one specific stone. Otherwise my recommendation is to see as many stones in person as you can, in varied light and under magnification when possible.
