As a mother I feel the reason the female quacks is due to the fact that she needs to be loud enough and clear enough to keep her hyperactive, unruly, heathen children in line! Although the while the male mumbles to himself working out projects in his head unaware of his stressed out, molting wife...

Thank you for sharing this info. I love your vids, interesting, useful, fun and honest about the good and hard times. At 15 weeks, I'm still unsure of sexing our ducks, as they are Saxonys. Part of why I chose them to raise from eggs, as a school development project during lockdown, was for their looks and the sexual dimorphism making it easy to tell males from females, or so I thought. Most websites and vids on here don't mention them at all or say they are an exception to most rules lol and occaisionally in the small print someone mentions juvenile plumage but without explaining the timescales involved. Ours have been distinctively quacking since 2 1/2 weeks, have no curly sex feathers, dark orangey beaks, tan overall plumage with the pale eyebrows but have been moulting fluff for a month, their chests are darkening and a white band is beginning to appear around their necks. As all three are the same we are still none the wiser as to what we have. I've a feeling that we won't know for sure until they do or don't start laying eggs next year. Any further nuggets or tips would be appreciated. Thanks again. Shaz

I like to advocate all-drake flocks for "backyard" ducks (where allowed). People tend to dump their drakes in parks, lakes, and the animal shelter. So you'd be helping to save a life. Plus, they generally are OK when there's no females around. Sometimes, they will fight a little, but I think it's because their hormones get ramped up or they're bored.

These are really great tips! One thing to note, if you have Muscovies, these differences will not apply. :)
@johnejankiewicz66354 жыл бұрын
Actually most of them do. Female Muscovy ducks will definately quack if they are upset. Male Muscovy ducks have a raspy voice. With Muscovies at maturity the male is often much larger than the female. This is called sexual dimorphism and is very evident in Muscovu ducks. Muscovy ducks do not exhibit the curly tail feather on the males because they are not actually `true`ducks. They are a separate species related to both ducks and geese. I raised white Muscovy ducks for about ten years. Wonderful mothers and if you are not careful can cause an overpopulation problem.
