This the ghost of a man and his dogs. Every year on this day he appears long enough to cross ahead of a train, only barely making it past the speeding train. He disappears when the train passes. It is said that on a windy, dark night you can hear the howling of the dogs. His lonely widow was seen sitting by the tracks as she mourned the death of the dogs. She always blamed him for the incident. She didn't grieve for him. This all happened many years ago before there were warnings or lights at crossings. She decided to mark the place where he died with a marker but instead of the usual cross she just erected an "X" to mark the spot. She only put his name on it. First name was Buck and his last name was Cross. In the obituary they listed him in the normal last name, first name format. Cross, Buck . To this day the X marker at every railway crossing is called a crossbuck.
