please correct the video, emergency drivers maybe trained to drive in a manner that does not put people at risk, but on the day I watched your video, I experienced an ambulance driver not driving as trained, in the heat of the moment either ignoring or forgetting the training, please be honest in your videos, we are all human and even emegency drivers may make mistakes which we need to help and fix.

A few years ago I saw footage of a taxi driver in Moscow break checking an ambulance on call (blue lights and all) to the extent that they had to stop. This was a mistake as it turned out because other road users dragged the cabby out of his car and beat him up. Not condoning violence but this driver should have lost his license for a few years at least.

In a similar fashion some streetracers in Germany have been tried and convicted of murder and attempted murder. But in the end, it boils down to the letter of the law. Given that no one died, and there was no evidence that the ambulance was blocked with the intent to harm the patient, the letter of the law likely gives no basis for a conviction of attempted murder.
@dibqip
@dibqip Жыл бұрын
@@HiltownJoe I think there is evidence there was intent to harm the patient. Ambulances don’t move on blues for fun. When I am driving I assume that any ambulances or fire engines running blue lights are doing so to safeguard people’s lives. You are probably more knowledgeable than me about the relevant law, or at least its modern application (or failure of). But I am pretty sure if you put that guy and this evidence in front of 12 of his peers he’ll be convicted.
@HiltownJoe
@HiltownJoe Жыл бұрын
@@dibqip Intend to harm is a tricky thing. All he needs to say is "I was so angry, it did not even come to my mind, that there might be a good reason why they were running blues." Then it comes down to wording of the law, like reasonable person standard or reckless disregard for the life of others or something like that. When it comes to jury trials, it is actually a huge risk to present the jury with too serious charges. Jurys tend to give much lesser convictions and even innocent judgements when they are asked to rule on charges they deem excessive. I just looked into the legal guidance from CPS regarding murder, and they write for attempted murder, there needs to be intent to kill. So in British law you would have to prove that the driver did hinder the ambulance to kill a person. That standard is much higher than the German standard, where an intentional action that will likely kill a person is enough eveven when killing was not the goal. Basically the British standard is strict intend, while the German standard is reckless disregard.

@@dibqip There's no evidence the driver even knew who the patient was. Be realistic, nobody is on the "other side" of this issue. Everyone agrees he is a moron and deserves the harshest punishment possible. That doesn't mean we should blatantly misconstrue what happened or reinvent the law in order to deal with it. If you think reckless driving or impeding an emergency vehicle deserves harsher punishments then just say that and people might actually agree with you and you might get your way.
@dibqip
@dibqip Жыл бұрын
@@SineN0mine3 ok I think you may be overestimating my knowledge of the law here, I am a complete layman… However if someone fires a shot into a crowd of people without knowing who they might harm and someone dies, were they not murdered? Why is it required that a killer should know who their victim is? It’s not like this guy was just generally slowing random vehicles down, he was specifically targeting an ambulance responding to an emergency. I think any reasonable person would assume that would seriously endanger the patient whoever they happen to be. I am not asking for new ever more specific laws here or get my way, I just feel like some more insightful charges could have been presented to a jury.

That’s just one really obvious way it happens daily! There’s many more scenarios where you can end up in trouble through trying to help the ambulance. So if you had two people needing emergency help at the same time, one was a child been hit by a car and the other was a heroin addict that just overdosed, who would you help first? One thing I'd like to see, would be additional punishments added to those already handed down, if the patient's health or recovery were adversely affected by the idiot's antics. In any event I'd like to see such people's cars being seized and sold on, with the proceeds being paid to the emergency service that had been targeted by the idiot, or being used as a "victim surcharge" . The sad part, and probably forgotten, is the knock-on effect upon the next, and subsequent emergency call out. So, even if the patient whose call had been delayed, was not directly affected, other patients calls may not be so fortunately.

There are psychos in Ireland who throw stones at fire and ambulance crews attending scenes in a hurry. Some people seem to be jealous of emergency services in the performance of their duties. They resent the exemptions these services get in the rules of the road. I have seen arguments develop at red lights when an ambulance tries to get through on red in gridlock conditions. Most will let such vehicles through but you will always get some rule-bound nut resenting the fact that emergency vehicles can push through in an emergency. These nuts must think the emergency service providers a playing a game and they resent this.

As an ex firefighter I can say this sort of behaviour is getting more common place….we are on a more regular basis having to put up with road users trying to keep pace with or even try and race or overtake our appliance whilst it was driving with blue lights and sirens on….sadly not all appliances are fitted with cctv recording equipment so when reported to the police it can be “our word against theirs!”

I will admit I did once speed up to the speed of a responding fire appliance (when i lived overseas) but it was on a long straight country road and I got out of it's way at the first safe opportunity, what was most shocking those was the row of vehicles behind it keeping pace as there was 8 in total non of which had any identification that made me believe they were anything other than nosy idiot trying to see what it was responding too or just W⚓️s trying to use the appliance as cover to speed. As someone who responded in emergency vehicles I was confident enough that I could do the driving above the speed limit in a safe manner based on the road conditions but wouldn't expect or suggest anyone else to do the same.
@garethskidmore9567

@@cuddlybear_uk on a long straight it’s not so much a problem….where I live in the countryside it has it’s obvious hazards as a response driver add to that another road user behaving as I mentioned above and as the driver of 18 ton vehicle your concentration is now being split between what you’re approaching, be it traffic or bends or both, and the vehicle behind that’s trying to race/overtake! You adapt to the situation but that can often mean reducing speed which increases the overall response time……putting lives at risk ultimately!

@@garethskidmore9567 100% agree. My preferred option is move out the way immediately as then I’m not impeding the progress but like on that country road it wasn’t an option so to minimise the time I was impeding it’s progress I drove faster than I normally would to allow me to get out of its way. I would say 1st option is move to the side, 2nd option if option 1 is not viable or safe is make best progress to a place where option 1 is viable and safe as sometimes immediately getting out the way isn’t possible to safely do in which case stopping and completely blocking the progress is the worst possible choice a driver can make.

@@cuddlybear_uk I can’t speak for the other emergency response drivers but with the fire service we were taught that if there was no where safe for the traffic ahead to pull over to allows us to pass “we” would go dead, that means to turn off the sirens and in certain situations turn off the lights. This takes pressure off the vehicles in front to just suddenly stop for example on the apex of a corner forcing us into the path of on coming traffic, by going dead the traffic keeps moving so “we” are still making progress, when “we” see a place ahead for the traffic to pull over then “we” will sound the sirens. On another topic about ERD is how some drivers when in heavy traffic just sit on the bumper of the vehicle in front with the lights and sirens going full tilt……it’s just blatant bullying!! My instructor always taught me to hang back keep the lights in but sirens off….this takes the pressure off the vehicles In front and then within a few moments do they start to move over making space for us to go…sitting on their bumper can and does make people panic and they do silly manoeuvres which often result in you losing progress, that’s just my humble opinion🤷🏻‍♂️

A black list sounds like a really bad idea. First, if he was in need of medical assistance, he'd probably not be the one making the call. Also thank god we don't need to prove the identity of someone before getting help for him. Second, for the same reason, if he was to call emergencies, there would be a fair chance he's actually calling for someone else. So yeah, sentencing someone to death because of somebody else's behaviour is definitely not what we want. Let's keep emergencies simple, thank you. Better take the risk of saving of a few maniacs than risking the life of innocent people, which would be the most hypocrite thing to do since that's what was supposed to be punished in the first place.

Plus every weekend of his life will be messed up for the duration of the sentence AND one tiny little slip up and BANG!Whoops it's dark in here. Plus if course £600 down the swaney. Personally if it was one of my family members he was putting at risk, he would need the services and care of just the people he was blocking pretty soon. Idiot.

Kind of a slap on the wrist for what he did. He should have served the full 3 yrs. Thanks! (If this was the USA, the person who the ambulance was going to save could file a civil suit against Butler for attempted murder, he'd probably win a huge cash settlement by the jury to send a message to those who would try this.)

The level of road rage in the UK is climbing alarmingly. This is a new time high in that rage and a catastrophic low for a road user to engage in. Albert Butler found rage and hatred for something we all see as a saviour. Albert Butler is so broken he targeted them in the belief they had somehow wronged him. He then continued that rage over a period of time that is frightening to observe. I do hope he gets the psychiatric help he needs. For the sake of anyone that crosses his path going forward.

Sorry but where are you getting all that from?? Knowing a bit about this, this has little to do with that, it has to do with him being a hoofwangling spangletwat.

@hfc I've worked as a paramedic for nearly 20 years and that hasn't been my experience. Yes there are asshats as there are in every walk of life around the world but to say more people hate us in the UK compared to other countries is wrong. In Australia it was so bad they had a public campaign about it.

@@themanwithinflatableknees8770 Sadly the same people that scream the loudest for your help are often the ones that are most inconvenienced by your need to help others. People, not all, but in increasing numbers, have become secular and selfish. Face to face interaction helps a great deal with this. When driving people become faceless. It's almost like the road has become a faceless internet chatroom. With all the degenerative behaviour in tow.

@@Jimbob7595 I would hope not. Albert Butler's actions on this day are aberrant and not excusable in any way. But causing harm to prevent harm is a very thin line. I do think he should not be driving. Driving is more deadly than any bullet in the wrong hands.

I hope in the future HE desperately needs the help of an ambulance and it`s held up by someone else as selfish as he is...

Sentence not harsh enough. If it were a member of his family in need of emergency care he’d be the first to complain. His callous behaviour is beyond belief.

I don’t think banning him from using the emergency services would work, that could lead to those he lives with suffering. He should be made to go out with crews and attend emergency calls to see the impact his behaviour could have had.

Would you want this plank coming with the paramedics to see you if you were having a heart attack? I'd keep him far away from any ambulance or sick people, personally. Banning him from getting help seems wrong, if his life is in danger he should get access to the help, but maybe make him clean out the colostomy bags for a few weeks.

Unbelievable how someone could drive like that I've always pulled over for all emergency services and indicating my intentions when safe to do so. he should of got 5 year's behind bars that would give him time to think about his actions

This is highly appalling behavior and I am glad they caught him and he did over all get lucky he did not get sent to prison. It is very aggravating when something like this happens so I am glad law enforcement was able to get him. When similar (not by far the same) happened to me many years ago, we was responding to a unconscious female at a restaurant on a very foggy night you could not see 75 feet (about 23 meters) in front of the ambulance so we was traveling at a safe for conditions speed. A very easy to recognize paint job car had speed up on our bumper then flew around us to get to the liquor store a mile down the road. We called it in but it was gone by time law enforcement got there. Saw it the next day but was told they could do nothing as there was no proof same person was driving. The unconscious female turned out to be a drunk that passed out and was awake by time we got there. However I will say that in this case your medical services should not be withheld (as that could be a death sentence) but address should be flagged for a "slow response due to traffic conditions" no matter time of the day.

The trouble with the slow response is the emergency could be for an innocent party of what the driver had done, a child for instance.
