I feel like, in the cruelty squad OST, all the "happy" music has such a simple and aimless melody, while the music expressing negative emotions is much richer and more complex. It's like joy/happiness/etc are so *unfamiliar* to the inhabitants of Cruelty Squad's world that they can't really depict it in their art in anything but the most simplistic and hollow form. Like those early depictions of rhinocerouses by artists that had only heard descriptions of them and never saw one themselves, and so couldn't draw a very convincing/accurate depiction of one, instead drawing a cartoonish monster that only loosely resembles actual rhinocerous.

I agree. The original OST does a good job of conveying that helplessness. I smoothed over some dissonances in my arrangement of this song so it's not quite as harsh, kind of gives it a bit of a nine inch nails edge or something. Although my backyard (at the time) that I filmed the end of the song in was backed onto an industrial area and industrial waste used to get blown into my backyard whenever it was windy. Which in itself has a very cruelty squad vibe.
