I played this concerto when I was 12 years old. That was in 1977. I was smart though and played the timpani while I let some other idiot play the violin part. I became a professional percussionist, and the rest is history. I love your humor, keep up the good work and smile more!

With the internet, we are exposed to the most extraordinary talent daily and can this can give the false perception that such ability is ubiquitous. However, the truth is that playing any violin concerto to any acceptable degree is a remarkable achievement and indicative of real talent and hard work. Good luck; hopefully we'll see you with the CPO/JPO or KZNPO in the next few years!

Intonation as a whole is a very difficult thing to practice. Every violinist practice intonation every day. Mendelssohn violin concerto has one of the hardest opening of all violin concertos (in my own opinion). In just one and a half bar the soloist has to join the orchestra and perform the opening melody, which is solely on the E string. Now, I personally don't know anyone who doesn't struggle with intonation, maybe Ling Ling doesn't. And I don't know if this video is supposed to be funny or what, but I think to have the courage and confidence to stand before an entire orchestra is already quite an accomplishment. He is playing out of tune, but I don't think he is panicking. That should say something. My teacher always tells me that, everyone makes mistakes when they play, especially when they're on stage. Instead of practicing to be perfect, it is much more beneficial and realistic to practice to be prepared when mistakes are made. I honestly think this guy in the video is really well-mentally prepared. He doesn't look panicked, and he doesn't let his mistakes drag him down, he just carries on.

You seem rather tense. Your intonation sadly left the building just before you started and also, you seemed a bit "too eager" to tackle some moments. Your rhythm became very erratic at times. Your octaves felt disconnected. You went for it at first but then, switched rhythm very abruptly on the 2nd passage, which I believe affected you a lot. I like it when there's some hesitation and it picks the pace, building up some dramatic phrasing. Some moments on the E string felt really good but you still seemed tense. Understandable, you are exposed in these parts. Your cadenza felt like you were just playing the notes and that's it. You said your piece in monotone and moved on. Nothing wrong with that. Again, just being picky here but a bit more expression would probably feel better. Give yourself some room to move around the phrasing so you liberate yourself and relax before the orchestra joins you. The ending started quite nicely and then, you lost your tempo. It was clear on your reaction and on your face. But you know you just need more practice. However, I will say, in the moments where you seemed more confortable with yourself, it was quite enjoyable to hear. You were never muted by the orchestra at any point, either, I could distinctly hear your violin over them, which is not an easy task. May LingLing bless your efforts and practice. A Mendelssohn violin concerto is always a big step, lots of pressure. Take a breather before you go for it. Don't simply "send it" and end the day hoping your octaves were there, give it some delicate touches here and there and you will be golden. Take my comment with a grain of salt, I've been spoiled by Hilary, Ray and Brett. I am curious, though, why this? Just a standard rehearsal or is there a Mendelssohn violin concerto coming soon? Also birb

I don't know how old you are but I think you should take voice lessons as well. You may have a good tenor voice. Plus the singing lessons will help you with intonation, phrasing and legato. But make sure you find the best possible voice teacher in your area. Joshua Bell was able to get exposed to Opera by attending great Opera performances he watched while at Indiana University when he was a teen studying violin there. That helped him with his violin playing, I am sure. Remember that violin playing is the closest thing to singing that an instrumentalist can do. Best of lucks!

@@RubsViolin You're welcome! Did you know that Joshua Bell is even married to an Opera singer, a soprano? It's interesting. So, vocally, at age 16 you could start taking voice lessons, not now because your voice may still be changing currently from treble voice to adult voice. And when and if taking voice lessons, don't over do it in terms of range development or volume acquisition for a few years because you would be too young for that. You can concentrate on finding your voice type (I think it's tenor) breath control, voice placement, text expression, legato singing, stylistic interpretation, rhythmic accuracy and constancy and phrasing. Your repertoire, besides the Vaccai and the Lütgen excercises, should be only some french chansons, some baroque arias and some german Lieder and English baroque and classical songs. By the time you're 18 you could start singing Mozart Opera arias if you did find out that your voice is appropriate for Opera. Then by age 20 you could start studying and singing the standard lyric tenor repertoire (if you are indeed a tenor, if not, then, whatever your voice type turns out to be) and full Italian and French Operas. I wish you the best of lucks!

@@RubsViolin If you are bowing on D and/or G strings, play with your left elbow inward toward your center line, and your bow arm upward to neatly clear all the other strings and deliver more power/ resonance. Your bow would be slightly elevated on the treble side of your violin. Then all of this would be the opposite on your A and E strings. G string elbow in the farthest, and Bow arm elbow the highest. your bow arm and left elbow should position this way across the fingerboard string by string. E string, the left elbow would be the farthest outward away from your center line, and your bow arm downward the most on the rebel side of your violin. Hopefully. you can envision this. It's hard without a diagram. Btw: Your playing sounds very, very good.
