Half of it is poor curriculum and pointless info, and half of it are teachers required to pass students without them actually learning anything. Therefore, there’s plenty of informed students who actually listened and absorbed things from school. And many of these kids will grow up to learn more rather than not.

At my high school we learned US history up until like 1960 alongside the way Latin America was colonized. We had a single “world history” class where we learned the first civilizations in the Middle East and then for the rest just history of Western Europe taught poorly without touching on anything in Africa or Asia at all beyond the first civilizations. The only reason I learned any history at all was that I looked into it outside of school when I was bored. I lived in a poor area though so the funding for classes was pretty low while in a wealthier area they would have a legion of different classes with far better education. Ironically America has some of the absolute best education in the entire world… if you can afford it and if not you just get screwed over. It essentially works so that the elite get highly educated to the best capability possible while the middle and poor class are kept uneducated
