Refs should be held accountable for their calls. They should be forced in front of the press exactly like players are after games. The leagues hides them. Explain the calls, or missed calls. Even if they are lousy explanations, they are explanations. Let's hear them.
@floxy20

"Accountable", as in explain yourself if my team lost. Missed calls? Will there be fans pointing to video replays showing the missed called that went against your team? Anyone connected to the NHL in a professional capacity will be laughing at this idiotic idea. Actually, every official's performance is reviewed by the league but biased fans are not included in it for a good reason.

@@ThexSleepingDragon Yes there is... they don't go to replays for missed penalties in hockey. It's just the way things are. It's still a human controlled game. You want them to stop play and review every single missed call? That would be boring. Every team goes through something like this so you can't even begin to say it's unfair. If we're just using digital cameras for everything we wouldn't need umpires or refs at all... not worth the investment in my opinion.

@@floxy20 What's the difference if a ref does questions after a game or goes on TSN/Sportsnet long after the fact? I know for a fact Fraser has done it for several of his games but mainly talked about the Gretzky high stick on Gilmour he missed costing the Leafs a playoff game, I give him prop's for coming clean it was a very "Adult" thing to do.. If you have to hide the truth or even sugar coat it you might be slipping down a very dark rabbit hole of mistrust and corruption... them talking about the games and owning there mistakes can only be a good thing for the league and it's image.

Kerry Fraser's missed call on Gretzky in 1993 is so unfortunate knowing it probably came from the best referee the NHL has ever had. He is the all-time leader in games officiated in the NHL, has called games for both the Atlanta Flames and Thrashers and was once voted the most consistent referee in the league by players. In Britain we had a ref called Nigel Boniface who regularly got criticised for his style of officiating being all about himself. (He regularly called games like the 1975 Flyers were involved) Conversely we also had a female ref Joy Tottman who was easily one of the best officials I ever saw in Male or female hockey (at least in GB) I'm also reminded of the 2002 womens Olympic final when Canada had to kill 11 power plays that to this day I still find baffling. As a neutral it was so clearly biased I was really happy Canada won that game.

The NHL is way too blatant with their manipulation of games and calls. Refs need more accountability. Most Canucks fans can tell you about Burrows and Auger and that game against Nashville. One of the most disgusting displays of refereeing I've ever seen. It wasn't even about blatant missed calls which can be attributed to human error. Auger made the game personal with his phantom calls especially the last 2. Did anyone ever see the clip of Auger winking at Burrows after the 4th phantom call?...."Payback's a bitch!" No one can ever trust a ref who puts his ego ahead of calling a fair game. After the Canucks-Nashville game on Dec 8, the NHL probably should have looked into future Canuck games with Auger on the slate and brought in a replacement ref just to avoid this kind of thing because there is no way the league didn't know about Auger's reputation for making things personal. Anyways, great vid and thanks for posting.

As a Canuck fan, I remember that incident. What pissed me off was the coach had no balls and dint say anything to him. Vigneault was as useless as teets on a bull! Tortorella , Neilson, or Quinn would have had something to say to him, fine or not! Questionable refs should not be allowed to ref in the playoffs too.So much on the line, you dont need a referee with an agenda.

Auger vs Torts would end one of two ways 1- Torts channels his inner Latrell Sprewell and just snatches Auger up and chokes him 2- Torts busts into the referee locker room with a stick and goes Tony Bananas on Auger. Either way, at the press conference after, Torts will refer to Auger as Gutless and tell him to shut his yap and park his ego in his pocket.

Great video amigo, wish people would talk about the poor officiating in the NHL more.. this "balanced penalties" thing needs to go! the more disciplined team should win, enough with the ghost calls simply to keep the penalties balanced.. if a team wants to try to cheat to win and play undisciplined then so be it but don't punish the other team simply to balance the penalties specially if the other team is actually trying hard to play a disciplined game.. ITS PATHETIC!

Stephane Auger is currently working for TVASports, one of the french sport channel covering the NHL, notably the Habs. Auger is still behaving badly with his colleagues, most of them are former french canadian NHL players. He can't discuss referee calls without arguing with his colleagues or being condescending. I do recall some years ago an heated discussion on a disallowed goal with Hall of Fame Mike Bossy. It was disgusting to see Auger loosing his mind and telling Bossy something like : "I'm a ref and you don't so all your points are not stupids". Bossy was really good to remain calm and chill while your colleague is throwing shit to you on live TV.

I'm fairly certain that game in Vancouver (and maybe one or two more assignments on the same trip) was the last time Auger crossed the Rockies to work an NHL game. I watched the newspaper summaries for the next year and he was confined to the East and given time off when the Canucks visited for a season and a half before he reffed another Vancouver game against (of course) the Islanders! When the league announced 'nothing to see here' a few days later the Canucks released to the media the pre-game footage showing clearly that the league was looking the other way. $2500 is a ridiculously small fine for criticizing a referee the way Burrows did and I thought it would be 10-20x higher with a lengthy suspension. Burrows would have been better off to write down his recollection of the discussion, seal it in an envelope, find a reporter after the warm-up and give him the envelope with instructions to open it after the game. That would have proved his case and Auger would be toast. But who can blame him for not believing what Auger was saying. As for Ron MacLean's reaction, it was predictable: Vancouver being strong has never been in HNIC's interests.

I would preface this with “in modern history.” This is because full time officials (that is full time Referees and Linesmen) didn’t come out until the 1950’s. In fact until the 1930’s really Officials where hired on a ad hoc bias, meaning that they were hired to work only one game at a time. So we can’t really know how bad (or good) the ad hoc officials were, though yes Mr. Auger looks to be really poor (as someone who has worked on the local level as a Umpire-in-Chief or head of local Little Leauge Umpires, representing all the bad characteristics that someone can have in the profession.)

Auger sure screwed the Canucks over. Probably other teams too. The thing is that I don't just blame Auger, the problem is with the NHL. They use refereeing to control the "entertainment value" of their product, instead of just calling penalties as they arise. I mean what else is "game management" other than a euphemism to thinly veil manipulating the refereeing in order to improve profits. They're trying to attract new fans but they're pissing off us old fans. I still like hockey but I don't like the Bettman led NHL, mostly because of the highly suspect refereeing.

This is an article written 4/1/2024: Stephane Auger, a name that once stirred considerable controversy in the NHL, remains a figure of intrigue and discussion long after his departure from the league. Auger's career as an NHL referee was marked by incidents that sparked debates on officiating integrity, player-referee dynamics, and the pressures faced by officials in professional sports.

Why do referees get it easy? Players, coaches and upper management have to do interviews when theyve JUST lost the Stanley Cup Final. We all know they dont want to answer questions on why they couldnt win. They show up and answer as best they can. All officiating peoples need to answer for the way they negatively affected the game. "NOPE!!! We can hide until the media leaves or just go home right after the game"

Over the years I have worked with some refs that got off being a focal point in the game. They would constantly bicker with coaches, players, parents and drag the game on and on. Then at the end of the game, everyone is screaming at him. They got of on it. Myself, I would keep communication with players from both teams constantly and MANAGE the game rather than police it. If I was calling a penalty, it is 100% a penalty. I would call it with no fanfare or theatrics. Just get the offender off the ice and drop the puck! 99% of the time when I was skating off the rink I heard nothing from the stands and every now and then players and coaches would say I called a good game. I would always tell newer refs, call what you see, don't make a show of it, but do it with confidence. Last thing you want is to be considered the reason for the outcome.
@lipscomb3632

So true. What you choose to call and how you make the calls make a huge difference. Every ref sometimes makes mistakes. it's a fast game and we are human. Sometimes the only thing you can do is own up to it. Nothing worse than a ref that is arrogant and holds grudges. Give me a 14 year old kid referee making mistakes any day over someone that think the game is there for their own narcissistic goals. I'll protect that kid...the arrogant ass is on his own. Call the obvious calls, call the dangerous calls, and call the plays that change possession. Otherwise...you are much better off letting the players play and keeping the game going.

The last decent "on-ice" referee the NHL had was Andy Van Hellemond*! He retired as a referee in 1997! That is how long the fans of the NHL have suffered the indignity of NHL officiating under Gary (Alfred E. Neuman look alike) Bettman! Bettman doesn't even realize the damage he, Bettman, the NHL referees and the rule book are doing to the Sport of Hockey! The NHL has the worst rule book, the worst referees and the worst commissioner in professional Sports bar none! They are all a bunch of "Tim Peel's"! *After Andy retired as a ref, he had some issues and had to leave the NHL but as a ref he was one of the best! my OPINION without prejudice 🦂🥂

I love how Wes says “5 minutes for fighting” he gets so into it. Onto what I am talking about here. It’s funny how y’all think he’s the worse ref in the NHL, but if this ref from the ECHL made it to the NHL it would be him. We called him”Mcnuttless” I think my mom screwed up his name once and it stuck but he was so bad even the Stockton Thunder, the old Bakersfield Condors rival we never agreed but everyone in this league hated Mcnuttless once our captain got nailed into the boards (which was a boarding that should have been a game misconduct) but it wasn’t, me and my mom had season tickets behind the Condors bench and he came over talked to our coach and said it was a clean hit, and I leaned over the railing told him “come here I’ll show you a clean hit” but this was one instance, if you want to see the kind of job he did, then look up “Bakersfield Condors Ontario Regin line brawl” there’s a goalie fight in that video, and you’ll see the kind of job he did. Ps he had beef with our coach in college and took it out on the players
