If like me, you struggle to hear sometimes, I've popped the walk around chat below
It’s so exciting to show you the SEAT 127 today, because not only is this a very rare car in England, it’s also the first SEAT to ever feature on IDRIVEACLASSIC.
Personally, I didn’t know an awful lot about SEAT and wanted to share this with you to add some context to this, what is essentially, a rebadged FIAT 127.
So SEAT, a Spanish car manufacturer, was founded in May 1950 and was originally an idea coined by a Spanish bank and was later taken over by a state owned industrial holding company.
The idea was this: Spain needed, or certainly wanted, their own mass production car manufacturer to boost the home market and potentially at some stage compete in wider Europe.
Progress on the idea had been slow due to World War Two and recovery from the Spanish Civil War and therefore Spain had no real experience in mass production cars and therefore looked to go into business with a foreign partner.
Which meant that when SEAT was founded, it was with a deal with FIAT already confirmed, which hopefully helps explain the SEAT/FIAT rebadging exercise on this car.
Going back to the car itself, the SEAT 127 is a fantastic little front wheel drive super mini in an era where the super mini was starting to gain real traction and become an attractive choice - which was only heightened by the oil crisis of the 70s.
The cars were made for a solid ten years between 1972 and 1982 and made in Spain exclusively to supply the Spanish market - the FIAT 127 was the car which would’ve been available to the non Spanish buyer.
Although the car we’re testing is the 903cc engine which was a FIAT engine as fitted to the FIAT 127, SEAT did design a slightly larger engine 1010cc engine which was used in the SEAT 127 but never an option on the FIAT badged 127.
In all of these little 127s, it’s a 4 speed manual and your body shapes on these were either a 3 or 5 door hatchback or a 2 or 4 door without the hatchback.
The 4 door variant was included as per SEAT’s design policy.
It’s worth noting that the 127 was Fiat’s first super mini hatchback and was so expertly designed with 80% of it’s floor space being used for luggage and passenger space, it made perfect sense that SEAT picked this car to rebadge for the Spanish market.
It really was a car to be reckoned with.
The partnership with FIAT came to an end in 1982, so it won’t surprise you to know the car wasn’t replaced with another rebadged FIAT, but instead, the SEAT Fura, which was essentially a bit of a jazzed up 127.
On the FIAT side of things, the 127 ended production in 1983, a year later than SEAT, and was replaced with the Fiat Uno.
When production came to an end in 1982, SEAT had produced 1.2 million of the 127, which marks this out as a pretty successful, iconic car of its time.
Now before we get on with looking at the dash, let’s chat to the owner Alex.

Apart from being incredibly popular in Spain, 127's were massively used as family runabouts during the 70's and 80's. For instance, my father in law had a LS like this one as family car in the first 80's and my uncle had a 4 door until 1986 to carry a family of 4.

These SEATs where completely made in Spain from the very first bolt, not assembled, as Franco prohibited any parts imports. Same happened with Spanish Minis by AUTHI. Even some models like the 4 door versions and other variants didn't exist in FIAT. This is a LS model, an Mk2 version of the original from 1972.

Well. Franco it was not directly 😁But we understand that it was his governments (appointed by him) that took the policy of applying high tariffs to imported vehicles and other products, to encourage their manufacture in Spain. Starting in the early 1980s, tariffs on imported cars were lowered. With the entry of Spain into the European Economic Community (1986) tariffs began to disappear. Greethings.
@RobinTheMini
@RobinTheMini Жыл бұрын
@@CarlosMartinez-yq1gm Well, not quite. Tarriffs and hardest industrial policies begun to change much much earlier than the EEC entrance. In the late '70's things started to get different (Ford built the main plant to manufacture the Fiesta in 1975, also Opel, Talbot, etc arrived). Until then Franco himself wanted Spain to be an autarqy, it was some of his Ministers who convinced him to start opening the economy . Apart from AUTHI and SEAT there were other factories here in Spain manufacturing Renaults, Peugeots, Chyislers, Citroen etc from the early 60's.

I believe the rust problem was due to the deal Fiat made with Russia to set up the Lada production facility. Russia did not have any foreign currency, so it was agreed that they would pay Fiat with sheet steel, which was then used to build Fiats in Italy. Russia bought scrap iron from around Europe and turned it into sheet metal. For whatever reason this steel seems to rot much faster than virgin steel. It's probably because the rust particles from the scrap got incorporated into the steel. It must have acted as a catalyst .

Wow a terrific review Steph made me step back in time to the mid 70s when I worked at Sevenoaks hospital in Kent we had a young nurse when it came to learning to drive was very nervous she learnt and passed in a Fiat 127 and was convinced she could not drive anything else, her instructor put her in touch with the sales guys at Tunbridge wells Fiat whom sold her a brand new model she loved them so much knowing they were plagued wiv rust she used to change for a new model every 18months and was so sad when the dealer told her in the Early 80s her latest model would be the last one she could have she was mortified, she left the NHS, sadly I do not know what make or model she replaced her last 127 with, but to hear her talk it was going to be a big decision it was if she was in mourning.

Great review, Steph!. Brought me some memories because my great uncle had one of them here in Spain, exactly like that but in dark blue. He traded it for a new Renault 11 in '86, when I was 3 years old, but I totally remember that dashboard with the dials on a wood area and some details of the car. It's really a good classic to have now, not so common in Spain as the Seat 600, but still loved. And that unit is in a gorgeus shape. There are some funny stories about Seat and Fiat "breaking up". One of the models in that storm was the Fiat Ritmo - Seat Ronda, which were very similar. Seat made an unit where all the Seat parts were highlighted in a different colour. I guess that was the time when Seat started naming their models after Spanish cities and towns. By the way, Fiat should do a new model based on those lines to throw some fresh air in the B segment, where the Punto has been with no changes for ages. Great work, greetings from Spain.

Another great review Steph! This reminded me of my cousins first car which was the Fiat 127 almost identical just with Fiat and steering wheel on the right. It had a sunroof. The glass kind, which eventually leaked. The 127 was a very pretty car, that little car inspired another cousin (her wee sister) to get one as her first car. So the sisters ended up having a white and black 127’s. The white one was replaced with a new Mini, and the black was replaced with a new Fiesta. Ford in the development of the Fiesta basically took the 127 apart, and used them as early prototypes for Fiesta(Bobcat)

Another subscriber here! In Portugal SEAT cars were available only from 1983/84 when the Ibiza MK1 was launched in Europe. In my childhood I've seen plenty of them in the neighbouring country and I must say the say the SEAT 127 and generally all the SEAT range was in general actually better than the Italian ones we had in Portugal. Spanish "Fiat's" had in most part of cases tainted glass windows, velour seats and more chrome elements. The model you drove was known, out of Spain, as the Fiat 127 Special. The regular Fiat 127 didn't include even the water temperature gauge or heated rear window, the floor was covered in a rather nasty rubber material. The console was most certainly an after market gadget hence the foot colliding with it. The pedal layout and throttle shape was designed for the heal-toe driving - eventually for furious drive-flat in the narrow Italian "strada regionale". Kudos for Hubnut 😉

You could talk about the switch gear alone for 10 mins. It was the same price as a Peugeot 205 XS, which would have been a better buy, because when I came to sell my Ibiza at 3 years old, I had to sell it through the dealership, as it was still a rare sight on the roads, and not on the list of second hand buys for most people.

I had a 1989 Mk1 Seat Ibiza Special with the same 903cc engine, sharing a lot with various Fiats as it was based on the Strada/Ritmo's platform. It was the most fun car I've ever had. It also didn't go up hills very well but I didn't care. I once did 500 miles in one day going to Exeter and back, and loved every minute of it. The cheapness was great too - a full exhaust system cost £36, a timing chain cost £10 and took half an hour to fit, tyres were 145R13 and cost about £25 each. I wish I still had it.

Okay, I love your style, I love your taste in cars, and I love that you drive a classic daily. My daily is a 1987 nissan sentra sport coupe. Super rare car. If you're ever in California I'd love to meet you after Miss 'Rona's world tour is over!

Hi Steph, love your videos look forward to them, you are so knowledgeable. I have asked Ian at Hub Nut the same question, as you are both great, and really value your opinion. If you had two grand to spend on a coupe (has to be a coupe, as said to Ian have a post mid life crisis thing going on) what coupe would it be please and why? Both you and Ian are fantastic at what you both do. I would really value equally both you and Ian's views and would be nice to get your view on coupes in general, be great to hear them in a future video. Thank you for any advice Kindest Regards Gerry. PS If anyone here leaves nasty comments to Steph, Ian alluded in his video you get some, why the need to be nasty? Would you like someone being offensive to you? We are all human and vulnerable.

Loved every second of that one, Steph, having a lifelong love affair of Fiat's...Ok, I know that's a Seat but it's the same thing 😂 the closest I ever got to a 127 was my old Yugo 45A which is essentially exactly the same, but was Yugoslavian...And I wish I still had it!

On the mainland we had the 127 onto 1986 or 1987, it was a rebadged Fiat 147 from Brasil. In latin America they were built until 1995...

When our family went on holidays to Spain, in the early 1960s, the vast majority of cars on the roads were Fiat-licensed SEATs. They pretty much covered the entire Fiat range, from the 500 right up to the 2300 (a popular taxi). The 127, of course, was a derivative of the Fiat 128 (itself a derivative of the Autobianchi A112), the car that set the engineering pattern for virtually all small to medium size cars we still drive today. Dear old Worthing looking good on such a fine day! Thanks, as always, Steph.

@@promerops One of my coworkers had a SEAT 600. He used it for a few years and when he replaced it he gave the car away. He didn't bother asking for money. He just handed it over to a person in need of a car.
