Hello Steph and Kev!! I always like to see a honest and realistic video demonstration, it shows the "human element" of how sometimes "things" do not always go as planned!! Great to see the fuel tank in position correctly!! I do like the paint finish, looks great! Best wishes from Lincolnshire.

I have had trouble with all of my old cars fuel tanks. The best treatment, other than a new tank, is the POR15 kit to restore them. Kills the rust and seals them with a fuel proof paint.

Where I live now, my drive is on a slope, a bit uneven and I have had more trouble with jacking my car up than ever, also I have found that small trolley jacks can slip away so easily due to their small jacking point. I have found that a level piece of sound drive is far safer, be careful how you choose your jacking points and always use decent quality stands to make it secure. I also have a set of ramps which are great for many jobs.

Great paint job Kev shows the importance of good prep, not the colour I would have chosen but it will look stunning with a red interior. Steph great to see you getting your hands on with the grubby bits, I love your presenting style. It is great that you can swap from a stylish 60's outfit interviewing Ben a couple of weeks ago to a boiler suit in the workshop. great content!!

Its really coming together now and the paint finish looks stunning Kev. Its interesting to hear the grades you used for flatting down. Id like to be able to do that well myself. I cant remember if you told us... What type of paint did you use and what dictated that choice. Its also interesting to see you working round problems like that seal thickness.. I rarely find things are straight forward.. Time to clean my replacement tank out. Thanks for reminding me.

Nice little car and it's nice to see spare parts available. For my Jag XJ40, I was never able to find a new replacement fuel tank, yet alone a good used either. So I'm running the car with a plastic fuel tank from a modern Mazda 3 and it's not 100% perfect, but it has worked well for the last 4 years.

Great video. I see you went with a steel tank instead of aluminium. I have heard of a few aluminium tanks split when flexed, despite they are supposedly better at corrosion resistance.

The quality of that tank despite being made in Taiwan is the best I have ever seen! It will outlive me, I've fitted stainless steel tanks, genuine, spurious, that is the best I have ever used 👍👍👍👍

HI! Good job but could not understand why you did not fit the fuel sender when the tank was out ?
@kevinhirst41084 ай бұрын
I've always done it this way, no logic to it, 😎😎
@alanfoster22714 ай бұрын
Everyone to there own lol but I was in the motor trade working on all sorts of vehicles and my thinking it's easier to fit the sender on the bench than struggle under a wheel arch. But I appreciate you taking the time to read and reply to my comment. And enjoy your car

Any reason why the fuel sender was fitted after the tank was on the car? Seems easier to fit on the bench beforehand.

@@kevinhirst4108 Just curious Kev really. Thought that I might have missed something important lol
@martyncraske91503 ай бұрын
It is easier to do on the bench before hand but you then need to be careful not to drop or bash the tank as the float mechanism isn't cushioned by fuel around it. I also used a piece of steel pipe, about the same diameter as the sealing ring, cut 3 slots into the end to engage with the tabs and used that as a key to turn the ring to remove the old one and tighten up the new. BTW it's coming on well Kev.

@@kevinhirst4108 Am I right in thinking that back in the day that many cars were actually brush painted by hand? Seem to recall an old Rolls Royce employee saying that somewhere once.
@kevinhirst41084 ай бұрын
@@philipparker1319 indeed you are correct even buses were hand painted until the 90s the spraying of vehicles started after the war with the mainstream use of "cellulose" as a result of lots of gun cloth left over after the war, interesting fact the development of the spray gun, was designed by a french dentist, who discovered if you blast air across the top, liquid rises up a tube ie spit from the mouth! If you win a pub quiz with that you owe me a pint lol 😆😆😆 Thanks for your comments they mean a lot 😎😎😎
