Simple, RuneScape is a game you can slowly progress at whatever pace you want, whenever you want, and wherever you want. A game where you can damn near go idle and watch stuff on the side or you can hyper focus and do some pvp/bossing. The game just has a charm to it

I hate when people say you can't get into it now, I won my fantasy football league last year and part of my friends punishment was they had to make a group ironman with me. 3 out of 4 of them still are playing to this day and only one of them has played in the past. Ironically enough he is the one who doesn't really play anymore

It's almost like it's just a good game. And it's a very different game from what it was in 07, it is a mix between modern ideas and the best of what other games lost from that time. It's kind of like what shovel knight is in platformers. Oldschool graphics, still amazing gameplay, the old ideas meet the new.

I think the hardest part for players who didn't play it in the prime years, is the graphics and lack of hand holding that they are used to BUT when it clicks it clicks even now for new players ( their wouldn't be the numbers their are still today without new players constantly coming in) I've played pretty much every MMO their is to play and nothing holds me in long enough and allows me to play with different amounts of attention and time, plus the charm and progression system that isn't based on fomo and constant power creep.

@@illuminated1158 To me personally it was that it felt like... Dead? Not an mmo? Not a single time throughout my try (f2p - lucky bryo kill - bond) i had to interact with other players, there is even no global chat. As a sorta shared-world singleplayer it's fine, number grows up monkey brain happy, but i found it missing any social aspect whatsoever.

@@mr_oger That's really a symptom of the modern internet and its users, as everywhere you go is like that. Occasionally you will still run into one of us creaky oldtimers who chitty-chat like everyone used to do online back in the wee-gone past, but that is only an occasion.
@mr_oger
@mr_oger Ай бұрын
@@TheDoomerBlox I'm talking not exactly about people being proactive in talking to eachother, but that game's systems do not push you to come in contact with other players. Like, for example, Bryo or Elvarg are designed to be solo, but if instead they required 2 or 3 players - boom, you have player interaction, even if it's a bit too forced and rough even as an example - you got the idea.

The real answer is, OSRS is genuinely fun without being mentally taxing. It's what people want in video games lately. A game they can afk thousands of different tasks and still have fun progressing. Afk is a loose term, honestly it should be called "attention free" tasks. The point is, it's what we like deep deep down. We don't want to always be utterly maxed out on adrenaline playing call of duty every day. And if you do, and you are depressed, ayyeee here's your sign... OSRS is the embodiment of "Achievement" and without pay to win bs it remains something people revere in terms of the accomplishments some accounts can achieve. ANY account can achieve, and just by playing the game as casually as possible. Then you get into late game and get into more complicated things and it's just amazing and satisfying. Just my opinion :)

when something isn't made to look hyper real then the imagination fills in the gaps both story and visuals and gives you a better experience than real life even. Your take on it is spot on! And the first I have heard of it. Thanks. I played from 2001-2004 and was captivated. I thought I'd play until i was 90 years old. Now I really appreciate the game still but I couldn't go back because adult life obligations and other hobbies don't allow for the "grind" and I wouldn't play any other game because I love the grind. Getting to rune mining and 99 fishing and woodcutting in RS Classic taught me the skill of determination and willpower which are still in me to this day and have gotten me some great things in life.

I can chill on mobile and afk fish sharks, which gears me up for combat, where when I’m on desktop, I can then use those supplies to turn this medieval cookie clicker into a 100bpm rhythm game. Because OSRS is "safe", and of course because it is a genuinely good game. It doesn't have pushy microtransactions, it hasn't been designed to be frustrating in order to boost MTX sales, it most likely won't crash and burn overnight(again). It has no FOMO, you can logout, then login 1½ years later and pick off exactly where you left off. All your of progress intact, none of it invalidated let alone outright removed. In short everything we've come to detest in modern MMOs and games in general just isn't present in OSRS. It is as its name suggests, Old School.
@MyNameIsSalo
@MyNameIsSalo Ай бұрын
The lack of MTX is because RS3's MTX economy holds up OSRS. If whales in RS3 stopped whaling, OSRS loses a lot of its funding and they'd need to make up for it somehow. Servers are fucking expensive. RS3 is the Jesus being sacrificed on the cross so that OSRS can thrive. There's no other MTX-free MMO because what other company runs 2 MMOs simultaneously using one to fund the other? If you're making a MMO it needs to be self sufficient and OSRS is not self sufficient. It would lose money without RS3's contribution.

The fact that so many people in middle school / high school learned how to play runescape back in the day is a testament to its ability to teach people how to play it. I remember playing on release at like 14 and had no issue picking it up. You just do what you want to do and the game will teach you as go without you even knowing you are learning. I think its popular now for this reason along with it being a GREAT game to keep you occupied while doing a mind numbing / repetitive task. I used to play RS during down time in WoW raids and it made both experiences so much better since runescape is super relaxing but boring, and WoW raids can be super stressful but equally exciting. Playing runescape during wow raids literally removed the boring part from runescape and the stress part from the WoW raid.

I think the main reason games like this do well is because there's no artificial FOMO interjected into it the way WoW and FF do with gear treadmills. It's the same reason GW2 does well, the world feels more alive. It's more of a matter of experiencing the game, rather than rushing to a specific goal. I quit WoW and FF when I realized I just didn't care about getting to max level to do content that would largely be irrelevant a year down the line. It just felt temporary and fruitless.

FF's gear treadmill is basically non existent, you can clear 99% of content with marketboard items, and getting BIS is guaranteed due to it's book/tome vendor system. Infact some people rant about how much they hate theres no gear to chase after in FF, but most of the time you are chasing Glamour (the look) and not stats (this is how I perfer it) WoW on the otherhand can be extremely gear treadmilly depending on expansion.

It is a braindead joke, you are just dealing with insane jank and claiming mechanical skill, this isn't a fighting game, this isn't a RTS, or a Moba ect. Raiding in FF14 and WoW even within the same MMO pockets are way more complex, although jagex's more recent combat related updates are trying to put the game up to par. As long as it's on this engine it's just manipulating tick, and dealing with really awful ui and inventory management.

@@undercoverspy123 isnt wow and ff14 just "avoid red circles and cry to your healer when you get hit" , maybe interact with something within 5 seconds or stand in a specific circle to spice it up. What part of those games requires multiple tick perfect inputs in a row or you die? Have you watched either of the content creators recommended above? Rendi's lvl 3 fire cape for example perfectly tick eats for like 20+ hours straight, and a single tick (0.6 seconds) missed in that time means he has to restart the entire process. He had to go rent an air BNB closer to Jagex servers just to reduce the chance that a tick is missed due to latency. What part of FF14 and WOW requires that level of precision where you need to physically move your computer to a new location to save like 2ms off your average latency because you need that insane precision?

Look theres no point in me explaining any of that, just go look at a TOP(the omega protocall) clear in ff14 and try and parse whats happening. RuneScape is one of the only games out there that I feel can legitimately deliver on that notion of “a world where you can do whatever you want”. Many games try and claim this, but ultimately fail. Most open world games that tout “player freedom” are restricted down to only letting the player do whatever content the developers specifically crafted for them to engage with. And a lot of them end up adopting the same ideas as each other, which results in the things that you’re able to do, becoming the things that you already _can do_ in every other game. This is where RuneScape’s simplistic mechanics and “dull” gameplay turn into an advantage that it holds over those other games. Developers tend to focus on doing one thing extremely well - combat, story, etc. - and not much else. As a result, you could never have the breadth of content that RuneScape offers in those other games. You couldn’t have all of the 23 skills in a game like Elden Ring, or a game like Baldur’s Gate 3, or in any other game that was an open world / RPG. Because it would just require too much time and resources in order to match the level of choice offered by RuneScape in those other games. The basic point-and-click controls, the tile-based movement, the “dated graphics” - all of these aspects of the game that are _perceived_ as drawbacks, from an outside perspective, are the whole reason why were able to have a giant world where almost everything is interactive and beneficial to gameplay. You won’t get the same _amount_ of options in most other games that you can with RuneScape, and that’s what makes it different. That’s why it’s so special and why there’s nothing else like it.

Mr. President. I have been sharing this exact narrative with people extensively over the last month so happy to hear almost the exact same love reflected in your video. I think another thing that adds to it's popularity is the that all your progress and grinds are permanent. And all new content is optional (unless you play an iron) and you can do it at your own pace. When new items come into the game it doesn't make your current items obsolete, if I haven't played in 6 months usually the new quests guide me to the new areas and bosses, if I want to go play another game for a few months everything is waiting for me when I come back.

You nailed everything about the mechanics, but don't forget the community. Runescape feels alive in a weird way other MMO's dont. Being able to just talk to other players or ask questions like you're there is so immersive for the game world. That classic yellow text that appears above your head as if your screaming in the streets in unbeatable. The ever changing economy acts as a real life representation with rich people, poor people, and everything inbetween. Just hanging with friends, talking to clan members, or making your character look cool. And the simple style/unique designs make items timeless and unforgettable unlike many other cookie cutter games.

Especially after watching, I think there are some similarities between Minecraft and RuneScape. Both drop you into a world with simple blocks and components without any initial goals or obvious progression path. Neither force you to do anything you don't want, but provide a context that's interesting enough for players to want to explore and expand on without much preempting. With modern MMOs, you might get sudden invisible walls, pointing quest arrows, a flat progression path with everything you need to do prepositioned for you to get it done without thinking. These things make playing easy, but removes player agency. I love planning "oh, i gotta get to this level so i can unlock this so i can complete this", and i love staring at the skill progression charts, thinking about what i could unlock, then making a plan and making it happen. In contrast to a game holding my hand and going "Oop we're going up the stairs now! Place your left foot here, and then your right foot here!"

3 answers to that question. 1) Nostalgia. Gen-Z has been through a lot (9/11, Wars, Pandemic, Recessions, etc). We crave an era that was not plagued with all these problems, when we were young and innocent. 2)No monetization/Devs that actually play the game (Very rare these days) 3) Highly addictive gameplay loop

My take on it (being a designer) is that OSRS graphics and UI have a huge influence on the experience of guideless wandering around the game. The visuals are simple, colors well define and not complex, structures just well defined but not complex, it definetly helps players feel safe to walk around even without the game telling you what to do.

This is part of the reason why I love ironmen so much is the micro goals cascading into major goals. I am playing a sorta soft snowflake account (taskman) where my main goal is determined by whatever a spreadsheet tells me to do. But I am not wholely limited to that really. I can take breaks, do whatever. Here is one I had recently 1. Current goal: get Mystic hat (light). From Basilisks. 2. Already have black mask so I have everything I need to kill Basilisks. Neat. 3. out of boredom check the banked xp plugin while killing Basilisks. Realize I have 55 crafting banked 4. Decide I want a Ring of Wealth. So take a break from Basilisks to train my crafting. 5. Have to smelt gold to get enough bars for the tiaras and jewelery. Thankfully have that banked thanks to a previous Motherload Mine grind. 6. 55 Crafting aquired - oh I used all my gold 7. Teleport to Lumbridge to go to al kharid mine to mine one gold. 8. Make the dragonstone ring in the Al Kharid furnace 9. "Oh look there is a fallen star outside of Al Kharid bank" Mine it. 10. Realize I dont have 68 magic (have 67) 11. Teleport to Falador to enchant my ring by boosting my level with a Wizard's Mind Bomb 12. Back to basilisks to get my drop that the Ring of Wealth doesn't even boost. But hey at least I dont need to manually pick up the coin drops! This is why I like playing an ironman.

I think because Runescape has such a charm to it that just flows through almost every part of it and even as the faces that have worked on the game have changed, they've IMO done a REALLY good job of keeping that charm, specifically with OSRS. RS3 is sort of a mess, but if RS3 didn't fuck up as hard as it did, we'd probably never have seen OSRS released and you'd have tons of people with nostalgia for the OG RS they played as kids. Also, I think I can sum up RS's original charm with these two following paragraphs. I remember I watched a documentary about how the game started and I'll always remember the story of how the brothers (Andrew, Paul and Ian) tackled making sounds for the game, the sound when you cook something (the sizzle) was actually their mom cooking bacon at home. Which to me there's just something so cool about how in the beginning, most sounds were just recorded around their house. That's passion and that bleeds in every aspect of the game. They brothers didn't care about being flashy, they just wanted to make a GOOD game and I think they not only made a GOOD game, they made a timeless game that we'll still be playing decades from now.

As a veteran of both original RS2 and now OSRS, I love the game because it's a single player MMO. As an Ironman especially, being able to do what I want when I want and have the rare items I get as drops or the skill benefits I grind for or even the achievements I unlock be something I can compare to friends or "show off" to other players is a big deal. If this was a true single player game, it would not have the same appeal. There's something about it being a hugely public game with a buzzing community, that DOESN'T require you to play as a group that is awesome.
