If you believe in heaven and hell, do you dismiss God's tyrannical treatment of others because you "love" Him, or because you're chicken shit? It's time to grow a backbone and realize that it's just a myth.
Fun facts: it took over 200 files, 25GB of info, to create this animation. Mrs.DarkMatter plays one of the religious nuts at the beginning. The story was by DarkMatter, but everybody pitched in with some great extra lines. Oh, and Azrienoch's wee wee is probably perfectly adequate.

That obviously makes no sense - henceforth we need another theory. To me it currently seems that it is not about where a human gets sent, it is about where he chooses to go. And that choice is made every single day. I think there is a God and he offers everyone a path to Him - following your conscience. Of course, there are many other emotions to follow...

Isaak van Daalen One of the age-old questions. I cannot fully and accurately answer it. But I think one can steadily advance towards the desired understanding. Firstly, one has to realize that the life we are born into has rules and circumstances (both explicit and implicit) that every human being is subject to and no human being has set or can alter. Then, it is important to accept the fact that you, as a human being, have limitations and that you cannot hope to immediately and fully understand those concepts - that took (possibly) infinite wisdom to conceive. If you want to expand your understanding you have to replace the engine of your questioning from "what is the immediate explanation that will satisfy my desires" to "why things are and have to be the way they are". I believe that life, all its ups and downs are there for reason - to benefit us. Otherwise we are being subjected on a daily basis to negativity without any higher purpose - to me that possibility renders life meaningless and hence is of no constructive value. I will give you my answer (speculation) to your question through the more fundamental one - Why does suffering exist in the first place? There needs to be a reason for it. I think it has to do with the notion of choice. Lets assume humans have free will. If suffering did not exist, all choices could only possibly be between different degrees of positivity. You cannot even have a "cost" attached to some of the choices, because it is a negative effect on oneself. So this would render choices trivial, without meaningful impact, ultimately meaningless. If we are to look at the choices we make in our everyday lives, we will notice that the ones that we are proud of are when we sacrifice our own comfort for the sake of a greater good. (I wanted to give examples here, but I think it is best if you think about it yourself, because you know best what would be a good example in your life) Do you agree? It turns out that the meaningful choices are when we decide whether to bear a piece of suffering ourselves, or to delegate it to someone else. We came to the notion of forgiveness - when you are the victim of someone's wrongdoing, you often have a choice too - to seek revenge (to cause further suffering), or to absorb it (more painful for you, but closing the negative cycle). It turns out that every time we face hardship we are actually given the opportunity to become something more. Regarding to the question "Why would God allow something like that" - psychopaths, illnesses, suffering - you have to also consider the fact that only the existence of God could justify the existence of suffering - because otherwise suffering is pointless, something that should not be there, and life - much less meaningful (if not completely meaningless). Yes, as an Atheist I do believe that there is suffering and that it is meaningless. I do not believe that Life is meaningless. Without a god, I spend my life searching for ways of improving the world for others, and for myself. To say that we need God to have meaning to our lives is honestly a bit insulting to all of us who aren't religious, as every time you say it you're implying that we have no meaning, that we are lost, and that we are generally miserable without some big cosmic daddy judging our every move. This is not the case. If it's the meaning of life you're after, examination of it over centuries has concluded this: "Make more." As long as an organism is capable of creating copies of itself, it is life. Viruses, the simplest form of life that we know of, are not conscious beings. They do not recognize their own existence, they are simply biological computers, responding to stimuli and chemical reactions. Do they believe in a God? They don't even believe in themselves. So do Viruses have no meaning in life? Clearly they do otherwise they wouldn't be around today. As an Atheist it's up to you to apply meaning to your life, in whichever way you find best suits you. You cannot even have a "cost" attached to some of the choices, because it is a negative effect on oneself." This statement starts with not one, but two assumptions. 1. Humans do have free will. I actually am inclined to agree, but as of yet there is no actual proof, just philosophy really. 2. Suffering does not exist. It does. Nevertheless, I understand and respect the point you are trying to make. Regardless, the argument is logically flawed. Some people in the world suffer more than others. If what you were saying were true, we would expect all disease to simply cause a lot of pain, but not actually kill. This would represent a god who needed suffering, but didn't want any actual death. Yet there is the Ebola virus, which kills mercilessly by shutting down internal organs and causing internal bleeding. It's not a nice way to go. On top of that, it has a mortality rate of about 4 / 5 people, so unless God is bad at maths (and for that he would be forgiven, maths is hard.) it seems that what an all powerful God would do and what actually happened are two different things. There are things like genetic diseases, which the victim is born with. How is that just or fair when the victim cannot even try to prevent suffering? If God were real, we would expect suffering around the world to be equal and consistent, yet it's clearly not. Why couldn't an all powerful God / creator, simply have created humans with an innate understanding of what suffering is? If God did create suffering, just to contrast positivity, then he did a terrible job at dishing it out. The fact of the matter is that some people do not just suffer, they suffer excessively and through injustice. Yet others, even those who might deserve a bit of suffering, live comfortable lives. This is hints that suffering does not have anything to do with a divine being, but instead is just a natural response to our environment. "Regarding to the question "Why would God allow something like that" - psychopaths, illnesses, suffering - you have to also consider the fact that only the existence of God could justify the existence of suffering - because otherwise suffering is pointless, something that should not be there, and life - much less meaningful (if not completely meaningless). " Suffering does not prove that an all powerful creator exists. It actually counters it, because it points out all the things that He could have done better, and either couldn't or simply chose not to. Pain is the Human Body saying "This part is injured." It invokes negative feelings because it means we are closer to death, which is the one thing your body is designed to avoid. Suffering is actually an evolutionary advantage, because those who do not feel pain, do not realize that they are injured and thus often die from minor wounds or careless behavior. Suffering is not meaningless, it is there to show us what is good and bad for our health. without it, what would stop us from eating poisons, or breaking limbs? We would feel no consequences. On a final note, please explain how having a God makes suffering meaningful. I don't see how the existence of a divine being and pain can be related.

Also, how would we be born Athiests when at that stage, we're not familiarized with, or aware of the concept of a omnipresent deity yet? Before we share a belief or disbelief in anything for example, you need to be introduced to it. After developing prior knowledge in that subject beforehand, gives one the choice to either accept or decline. Babies however, lack this asset. An Athiest are aware of the tradition but still have a disbelief in a god, but for a young infant, its not like a he/she accepts or refuses the existence of an all-knowing being, its mostly that they've not yet adopted to the belief and also their brains are not yet at a stage able to grasp such a concept.

But no, he'd rather sit and watch people try to multitask their own life with others' while knowing that he could fix things in a snap. Exactly, I see that as a blatant control mechanism by whoever pushes it into people's minds for their benefit. What I think is actually real is that if we do bad things we make ourselves suffer in the long run, but only until we have "good" intentions, follow our conscience. Think of God as the parent, and humanity as the child. He teaches us what he can and let's us deal with our own problems. Poverty, War, suffering are all part of those problems. And you have to admit, if all the rich people decided to try and actually help people more instead of just hoarding their money(with the exception of people like Bill Gates). That's why both God and our parents don't instantly fix all our problems, because that would be bad parenting. They let us learn how to fix them ourselves.
