Lyrics: I'm a Barbie Girl living in a man's world. They think I'm plastic it's fantastic. They think that they can stare, undress me anywhere. "It's just romantic, stop being dramatic" I'm a Barbie Girl living in a man's world. I should feel lucky just being their understudy. I'm a Barbie Girl don't stand a chance in this man world. Imagination life is your creation. Come on Barbie let's go party wear whatever makes you happy. Come on Barbie need no army do whatever makes you happy. Come on people let's be real I'm not saying you're to blame. Come on people let's be real, the world is ours to change I'm a Barbie Girl living in a man's world. You're a Barbie Girl if not then it's still your world, to make a difference, it's our existence.

“It’s just romantic, stop being dramatic” Exactly what was said to me when I tried to report a boy who was stalking me when he wrote me 3 page long letters in red ink and attempted to break into my house. The police said it’s just a crush. I was refused counselling. He also dragged me into an empty field and attempted to rape me when I was 15 and he was 17, when we were friends in high school. After that I refused to talk to him, he would show up at my first job and wait for me outside, send me letters and stalked me on social media. My mums reaction was “What did YOU do for him to act like this?!” It’s a pretty horrible feeling. I recently learned from a girlfriend of mine that he is a maths teacher at an all girls school. I don’t know what to do. I feel like if I say something now, no one will believe me, just like before. But if I don’t do something, what if he does something to a girl at his school? I feel myself slipping.

@@murdermostdownunder3562 stay safe and make sure not to confront him alone or make your not alone with him and confront him when you do in a crowded place so he can’t hurt you. My story with such toxicity by adults was only Limited to elementary and middle school. I feel so disgusted even thinking about it now. There was this boy that used to bully me and when ever I’d tell an adult or teacher the responses would be that I was being dramatic that he maybe wanted to be friends with me or had a crush on me and didn’t know how to talk to me. Like this boy was calling me all sorts of humiliating names and bullying me and I was being dramatic. It really sucks that society Validates such behavior, like I now know that he was young and immature but those adults and teachers should’ve sit down with him and talked to him how his behavior was bad instead of telling me to stop being dramatic etc.

At my old apartment complex, they hired security to scare off lurkers. One late night I get home and the security guard approaches me, questions me, and I think, "alright, standard stuff, just wants to make sure I'm not lurking." At this point I've confirmed I'm a resident, but he starts shifting the conversation to "are you single?" and "do you live alone?" and "can I come over?" He started pressing me for my number and I realized I couldn't give him a fake one because he was standing right there and he wanted to confirm I was actually giving him something. I went back to bed and held a knife under my pillow, just thinking because I couldn't sleep, scared of the possibility that he would waltz right into my place and do something really scary. As a guy it was this one experience that really put it into perspective for me how awful women are treated. Thankfully this was the scariest situation I've been in and it never really amounted to anything in the end, but it really takes tough skin and incredible mental strength to deal with this every single day of your life.

apparently we're sharing stories here so, here's mine. i'm a 13 year old female born, non-binary person. i live in a pretty bad neighborhood. near where i live, is a seven-eleven, on a street corner. across from that on one side, is a liquor store, and on the other side, is a bar. so, one day, me and my best friend, we'll call her sarah, were walking to seven eleven to buy some snacks and coffee, to pull an all-nighter since we had a bunch of homework. so, we get to seven-eleven, and i can immediately smell some sort of alcohol outside. there's about 5 middle-aged men, all outside. all drunk as sh*t. i decide, it's fine, i've been here a million times before, and nothing real bad has ever happened. just some comments, english and spanish as where i live there's a lot of people who speak spanish and porteugese, luckily i know spanish. so, in previous experiences, there were comments, and sometimes i would get brushed against on "accident" or a few times i've had my a*s touched or my bo*bs groped which was "just an accident" which i would always just go home immediately. so, this one time, with sarah, we go inside, and i notice a guy in a green shirt following us around the store. it's a pretty small store, maybe 4 or 5 small isles. we walk to the back, grab 2 iced coffee's and i again see the guy around the corner. i have very good eye-sight, and she doesn't. i just pay attention to detail more, and can listen to multiple conversations at once (very bad adhd). so, we get the coffee's and i hear the guy say something. "ven aqui, ninas" (come here little girls) and i panic. she doesn't speak spanish, so i just cough slightly. "c'mon! let's go look at some snacks!" i say, and we walk to the snack area. we grab some snacks and then go to the checkout, and he's right behind us at this point. we hold a conversation, as he starts to touch my shoulder and back. i try not to make a big deal, and just keep talking with her, because i don't want to freak her out. he grabbed my *ss, and i flinched slightly, and he says "sigueme" which means 'follow me'. i just ignore it, and we get up to the checkout. so we pay for our things, and quickly start walking home. i notice, i dropped my wallet in the store. so we walk back, and i grab my wallet, and we go back home. but this time, i've bent over, and it's caused him to idk want to touch me more, because i was wearing a skirt. so we start walking back home again, but this time he's following us. so i start to talk and make jokes with sarah, to make sure he knows we're not scared, though she still doens't know what's going on. so we're laughing, and eventually, we make it to my house. i notice he's still following so i turn down the road and keep walking, telling sarah 'i wanna walk for a while'. she agrees, and we keep walking, meanwhile, i text my dad. *hey dad, somebody's following us, we need help. just turned onto belmont.* (street name). so he runs out and yells at the dude, who is clearly really drunk. we run inside and i explain everything to sarah who starts crying, apologizing for not noticing it was happening. we end up having dinner and i've never told anyone since then. this was about a year ago, when i was barely 12, maybe still 11.

@@ROSIE-sp1wx cause those people only watch porn and Hollywood shows and movies filled with sex scenes. They don’t know how to be romantic. It is taught behavior. I wish people would be more open to Asian romance shows and anime. You will see that Asian romance is poetic and sweet, no sex involved. Only words and sweet actions. You got English subtitles because Chinese and Korean dramas are getting very popular overseas. Especially older women love watching those shows I saw. Edit: the comment under mine has nothing to do with the Asian dramas and anime romance. Those dramas and anime are open minded and even Boys love anime/Donghua and drama are getting popular in Asia as the romance is super sweet and the story is amazing! Example: Heavens official blessing(Chinese animation. You can watch it on Netflix). It is a Boys love(gay). Very popular in Asia and overseas in the West. Another sweet good romance which is popular overseas and the story is amazing: THE ROMANCE OF TIGER AND ROSE. You can watch it on KZbin for free with English subtitles. It is about a girl who writes scenarios for series and suddenly she faints because of overwork. She suddenly got transported into her own novel and meets the handsome main character:a high general which is her enemy in the novel(she reincarnated as a villainess). Best drama ever, definitely watch it as your first Asian drama.

Maybe you could change some young girls world by speaking up.

Since everyone is sharing here it’s mine, I was 14, I’m 15 now, I was going to take out the trash, I noticed a truck with two guys in tit that looked at me to see where I was going, I tried to stay calm and go to just take out the trash and come back home, however when I was doing it I saw the truck again (since they were going at first the opposite direction, they had to come back again doing a complete circle around my village, that’s why I knew they followed me) I started getting really anxious because I was some minutes away from my house, I left my phone home and I was in flip flops (Trust me, u can’t run fast with that) I tried to be calm and then I saw when I turned around how the truck blocked the path (as they saw me going out of my house, they knew were I lived, and that still creeps me out a lot) as I didn’t know what to do I just ran pass them while one tried to catch my arm and the other was saying gross things to me, They thankfully couldn’t take my arm so I started running as fast as I could, when I got home I was crying, shaking and I couldn’t breathe because I was having a panic attack. Be safe please!! I'm okay now guys ty for the support!❤

I think the original barbie girl song was not unfemisint itself. I see it as a satyre, a woman playing into a man's view of her, the ultra-feminine and submissive eye-candy. Playing as if it's a happy reality when in fact it's "life in plastic" - it's fake. (This is not a critique of this version, this is really good!)
@rloach0673 жыл бұрын
agreed, i feel like if you just listen closely to the lyrics you can easily interpret it as very satirical and actually a very sinister song clearly condemning what is talking about by making it sound ridiculous in the juxtaposition of the theme and the cheeriness of the rhythm. I agree that to a grown-up might seem satyrical if you take a deeper look. But Barbie Girl has always been a catchy song for young girls and for sure they don't have the ability to see beyond the surface of the lyrics. And I don't think there are lots of adults who would consider either explaining the real message or just ban the song completely to their children.

@@mariacg8016 I guess but also, I didn't think a man could "undress me everywhere" when i was little. i took it literally and thought she was singing from a perspective of an actual barbie doll, who's clothes you can change in a middle of a scene you're playing - undress her everywhere.

Not even the song but Barbie herself was a really strong women. She was rich asf, had all sorts of degrees, by no means plastics, she was pretty, privilege, but also educated and extremely intelligent, she could compete with men and even out smart them and beat them at their own games, the main theme song may have been shitty but Barbie herself was anything but a fragile girl and could handle herself and would by no means sing such a disgraceful song.

When I was about 9, I traveled to visit family in honduras. One night my cousin walked me home around 10:00 and the front door where I was staying at was locked and it was because there was a party. She walked me the backyard so I can enter from there but she wouldn't leave until she saw me go inside. While I was walking I heard someone call out for me being 9, I stopped and didn't think much of it. A man way older than me came behind and held my arms and I could get out of his grip. I heard a belt being undone but my cousin jumped in and I was able to run away. Apparently it was my fault. I was wearing a dress, at night. I was leading him on, that's what my aunt told me. For the longest time I thought that it was fault and I didn't really understand the situation. Now I do, and now I can say freely that it wasn't my fault. I honestly relate to this song a lot. In middle school, this boy had a crush on me and I knew from my gut that he was not a good person. I was right. He found out where my grandma lives, and I felt uncomfortable, so I told the teacher in private. My toxic best friend (we are no longer friends, thank god) thought I was being dramatic and the teacher thought it was cute. All throughout middle school, he harassed me, stalked me, and even isolated me from the students. Once I got into high school, he somehow got ahold of pictures that were in my Snapchat account (and not from my phone camera roll), and my phone number. He threatened to come to my house and confront me because I didn’t want to accept his apology for what he did in middle school. I still get nightmares from what happened. I just hope I never see him again and I never ever interact with him again. Edit: Thank you guys for the support I really mean that 😊 I’m doing ok now. This happened a few years ago so I’ve moved on for the most part. I just wanted to point out that I decided to reveal something more personal for the first time because this song related to me in that way. Also, no one ever says that men can’t go through harassment, and just invalidating my experiences with sexual harassment and stalking is disgusting. Shame on you for that.

Not a man, you may love your mother, but why not others, what gives you the right to do that to other women? Everyone stay safe.

While I agree being a woman I want a world where my daughter can feel safer amd can be herself, but it goes both ways I know plenty of girl that do the same with men they don’t understand no means no and the difference a guy won’t typically get sympathy for the situation they’re going through they will probably get made fun of. Hit me on a whole different level. I used to be Barbie-obsessed when I was a kid. My parents worked their asses off to get me the dream house, the different outfits and cars and DVDs. I couldn't wait to grow up and be just like her. Look like her. Dress like her. Now I do everything in my power to not look that way and after the age of 15 I never wore a skirt because of the encounters I'd had with men walking to and from school. Since everyone is sharing their personal stories and being extremely accepting I was in love with a boy for 2 years, although he never felt the same way back. He manipulated me into feeling this way towards him and he was extremely controlling. One time I was at his house and he began to touch me. I began to feel extremely uncomfortable and violated. I pushed his hands off of me and clearly told him to stop. But he didn't stop he kept going. I felt like I had no power, and he had complete control over me. That day he sexually assaulted me. He made me think that it was normal, and that I did consent. Because of how much I liked him I brushed it over and pretended it was okay A few months later I was at a party in which I was very drunk. I had nowhere to sleep so I slept with him in his tent. I passed out of consciousness while I was with him. When I woke back up he was raping me. I was so scared and confused. I didn't know why he was doing it. Because of extreme trauma and dissociation tendencies I blocked this out of my mind. I didn't remember until 6 months later. Remembering was the hardest thing of my life. I blamed myself for months, tried to justify what he did and that he did because he liked me. At the time of remembering I was still friends with him and currently having sex at the time. As a form of self harm I continued to have sex with him even knowing what he had done to me in the past. One day I came to the realization that is was rape, and that it wasn't okay. I reported him to the police and my school as I go to the same school as him. The police told me "because I didn't make it clear at any point that I didn't want to have sex, it wasn't rape". I was unconscious, how could I say no. To this day, he has not received any legal consequences. I still have to go to school and attend classes with him in it. Everyday I am battling the pain I experience being near him.

it's definitely not my heart does go out to these people and the internet allows us to see these stories so I don't even know where some of these people live but to say it's better is wrong the people who are the worst can thrive in ways they couldn't it does also allows those that are good to be able to be seen more so that is a positive. The world I want to live in is one in which we can all respect each other without agreeing a world in which we all had the same opportunity and there is not many places like that in the world I want to be able to walk among people and just laugh and have fun despite our personal grievances a world where joy could flourish and people could be strong and get through life with no wars but that for the most part is a pipe dream and it's not even a little bit possible with people who generalize which happens no matter the ideology the idea that all men are evil is wrong and the all women are evil is also wrong and for some reason the internet you said was better than the world says one of these is right and one is wrong when both are wrong. Since everyone is sharing their stories here's mine- I was in a hostel with my parents because, my mum had some urgent duties in another state. Every year since the past 4 years she goes with us in may (excluding 2020). Since it was may this year (2018) I decided to go too. I had missed going in 2017 due to health issues. So there was a lunch room or buffet like area , you're supposed to complete your lunch and leave the plates on the table, I had finished eating. But my parents hadn't completed theirs, I was maybe 9 or 8 and my sister was maybe 4 or 5. Our rooms were in the upper floor, it really wasn't that far. I was too impatient to wait since there was a movie, I had left half watched. So I asked if I could go, my mum agreed. My sister also came with me, while going upstairs there was kind of a sitting place/ sofa. The room sweeper was just sitting on it, he was good in terms with my father. But I always got creepy vibes from him, he was kind of a nose poker and a possessive man, but I really couldn't do much so I decided to roll with it. So while we were going he called me and my sister and asked if we had watched some cartoon he was showing on his phone. It was some Christmas Eve song, I really don't remember. I said,"I don't remember, but we learnt it in nursery." And said that I was in a urgency and I had to go. Right then he pulled my hand and my sister's hand and forced us to sit with him in the sofa. I was really scared and felt something was off but I didn't react much. And be probably in his mid or late thirties with a daughter of his own. I kind of pretended on watching the video he was showing, then he slowly started making some really lewd comments like- "Your sister's kind of skinny, you're a bit plump you know. You should try to make you presense a bit unnoticeable, I think." I was already fukin' done with this man but I kept quiet out of respect and just mildly smiled and nodded. Then he slowly starts dragging his hand towards my shoulder and rubs it. I really didn't say anything, and thought it was an accident but then he slowly starts bringing his palm to my chest and rubs and kind of squeezes it. I was horrified. I quickly pulled away myself and my sister. He was kind of shocked and annoyed, he then asks if we want to watch anything else or we didn't like the "cartoon" he was showing. I refused politely but my sister was fussing and wished to see more of that song or smh. He was drawing her in again but I pulled her and said in a loud and angry voice to him "I have my own phone, she can watch in mine. No need." He was pissed of a was trying to convince my sister but I angrily denied him and returned to our rooms. He tried to follow but I quickly locked the doorand shut him outside. I'm still traumatized from this experience and when I told my mum about this( not the part when he was doing inappropriate things but rather just something else, he was calling us so and so) my mom blamed me and said we shouldn't have come alone.

To be fair "sexualization" is a natural thing that just happens regardless of sex. Women sexualize men and other women ALL of the time and even sexualize themselves on any social media platform they can in the guise of pride. On top of that, they do it in tv shows, movies, and even music. Personally, I don't see the appeal in all of it but to only blame boys and men is ridiculous.

My mom didn’t notice because she was facing away from me while paying at the cash register and I was right behind her when this happened. Never went into that restaurant anymore until I turned teenager, gained lots of weight & started wearing my headscarf. No one dared touching me anymore cause I wasn’t cute like when I was little. Didn’t tell my mom till I became an adult and she said I should’ve told her. Eventhough the food was good, I felt really glad when I heard the restaurant closed down few years back. Edit: My main point is to not keep quiet about it and try to deal with it on your own even if you think the situation is not a big deal. Im sorry that you went through that... I would just like to point out that people don't get harassed or assaulted because of the things they wear or how they look, people who are deemed "unattractive" by society aren't any less likely to get harassed or assaulted then those who are deemed attractive. I dont want this to come off as rude and i apologize if it does i just wanted to point that out.

Just an attempted hand grab caused you so much trauma? Can you elaborate on why? Also how does this anecdote connect with the video?

@lily Thank you. I was about to rage so much at this person. It's bad enough that woman are being treated horribly but when you're a kid, it's worse. You'll be scared to voice out thinking that you might have done something wrong that causes it when it's not your fault. Like many others in the comment section, they have parents who accused them of tempting the other party when it's not even their fault.

Trigger Warning: I was assaulted when I was 6 years old by an 11-12-year-old boy. I was in an after-school club playing alone in the sand underneath a playground. This boy I have never interacted with before kept adding sand in my underwear and would "clean it". He did this repeatedly. I was confused and scared I tried crawling out of the playground but he kept pulling me back in. I couldn't scream or yell because I was so shocked and nervous. I was even more disturbed by the fact that he kept sniffing his hands. It's terrible. I had no idea I would still be affected even until now but I still have trust issues. I have not told anyone about this because when I did a few years ago (I am now 21) they said: "Oh, he was just curious haha don't be caught up on that it was years ago. He was just a kid".

Oh wow, I was very scared to tell anyone my story because of the stigma that surrounds minor sexual harassers. Especially ones that are not even teenagers. I’m not sure I can blame a little kid anymore, but I can say it caused me some trauma that I decided to bury. I was also 6 years old and this kid was 9-10. I can’t really process how such a young kid can even think of doing this but it happened and it was scary. Especially when I knew nothing about what he was doing and now when I know, I’m ashamed. I know I shouldn’t be and I don’t blame myself, but I’m ashamed such things happened to me.

I'm so sorry. I just wanted to say that I work with children and that is not normal kid behaviour at all and defiantly not for a 12-year-old! From when children can talk they learn about everyone having private parts and they understand the importance of them being private. This is not natural curiosity, at any age. Your feelings a completely valid and he has no excuse!

These lyrics are powerful. Once at school, some shaved ice truck came. I placed my backpack down where I was standing, and I knew nobody would care if I just left for a second to check the prices. So as I'm looking at prices and seeing which I wanted to purchase, I hear a boy say "Wow, she has an ass..". That grossed me out so much, but I'm not the type of person who likes to confront people, especially since so many people get hurt doing so. I just left and went back into my spot. I wouldn't forget that, cause it was absolutely disgusting. Honestly hate the world we live in.

Once when I was 12, I went somewhere (with my mom tho) and while walking back home, I was walking many steps ahead of my mom and there was a man on the street who was going the other way, he started staring at me! I didn't know why, I felt so awkward! Luckily my mom noticed all that and came rushing towards me, then that man just looked away!

When I was in 5th grade some random guy I didn’t know and who I can only assume was in grade 7 or 8 grabbed/touched my private areas inappropriately when I bent over to take a sip of water from the water fountain. I was really scared and when I confronted a teacher he told me “girls can be so dramatic, suck it up” And it took me almost 3 years to realize what had happened was NOT okay and wasn’t my fault in any shape or form. It’s honestly disgusting that a man in his 40s (this guy literally had THREE daughters and a son) Could say that to a student who’s just been traumatized, I can’t look at guys older then me or just guys in general the me the same anymore. (like I was even scared to get close to my brothers and step brothers for a few months after the incident) And people say to me quite often “it’s not a big deal that happened like 5 years ago” But I can’t just get over it bc I had to see the person who touched me everyday leading up to his graduation and the incident wasn’t reported to my parents I had to tell them myself, and when they contacted the school the person who we spoke to said “it was probably just a kid being a kid, sorry but there’s nothing we can really do about it since it happened a few weeks ago” And then now after all that went on in elementary school me and my friends get told often that woman/girls are living on a high horse and we’re just being dramatic when we say things like “it’s hard being a girl” or “life as a girl can be tough sometimes” Like come on. Society as a whole needs to reevaluate its view on woman and how some of us live in constant fear of, you guessed it. Men

I swear the same happened to me. I was in the 3rd grade. When I bent down to take a sip from the water fountain, a 5th grader hit my butt hard. I literally cried and he laughed at me and ran. I told my teacher but we couldn’t find him it all happened so quick I couldn’t remember his face.

I wish I could tell you it gets better, but it doesn't. That's why it is SO important that women become the strongest allies to other women! As a woman- respect women, listen to women, befriend women, and learn to trust women. Men keep us in constant competition with each other because our coming together is their biggest threat to their power over us! #womenunite

I'm so sorry you had to go through this :(( once when I was in class, wearing a dress(I was around ten and in third grade) and I was writing things on the board for fun cause we were all alone in class, I started hearing laughs and when I turned around I realized one older guy was laying on the floor almost between my legs so he could see my underwear and some of his friends were laughing at it, he wasn't much older but at least three to four years more than me, I remember running and crying in the bathroom, when I told my teacher she got so mad at him, his parents were called, mine too, but nothing happened to him thanks to the good old school advisor who just TALKED to him, and I couldn't wear dresses to school anymore cause he advised my parents that it would be better. Dispite that neither me or my mom felt safe anymore with me going on dresses so she wouldn't let me wear it anyways :/ I hate this memory but I don't think I'll ever forget it, I still feel sick when I think about it and I'm 18 already

Girls, use your phone to get out of danger! When I was around 9 years old, my mom dropped me off to my grandma around 10 pm. She looked after me untill I got inside the building and she drove off. Behind me, someone was pulling the door. I could see a tall silhouette trough the mozaic window and I thought it was my father, so I got back and opened the door. It was not him. I felt a weird feeling and i was thinking if I should go in the elevator with this man or take the stairs. It was a 10th floor building and grandma lives at 7th. I felt like he was waiting to see what im gonna do. If he followed me on the stairs, he could dragged me in the tunnels where we took the trash out so i tought it was better in the elevator. We got in, he closed the doors and pressed the second floor button. When we got there, I was trying to open the doors to help him get out and he closed it back. He asked me if i can do him a favor. I was terrified, but i felt like I had no choice and said yes. He looked very nervous and shaky and he asked me to close my eyes. In that moment I started crying and yelling , and he got out. I run in the apartament shaking and called my parents who came back and looked for him. They could not find him. Im 23 now and still have some nights when I can't sleep cause Im thinking about that night... BE SAFE GIRLS. dont be afraid to scream and kick! If I didnt yelled, i dont even wanna know what he would have done to me

@@fallinqangel9403 Thank you for your kind words. It was really scary indeed. We are very lucky now that we have phones. If I had a phone then, I'm sure I had call my mom to stay in the phone with me. The weird thing is that I felt the danger since i saw his face. I dont know why. I was not a shy or scared child, but that time I just felt something is wrong.

Always trust your gut. ❤️ Glad you are safe. I remember I was 8 skipping outside of a doctors office. I was waiting for my brother. A black van was going in circles around the shopping center. I got goosebumps and something told me to go inside. As I was walking closer to the door he pulled up jumping out of the car close to me. I screamed ran inside and locked the door. My mom sensed something was wrong. The guy left when he realized he failed.
