As someone who has a Ford... There are many things I wish a check engine light would come on for but don't. What I mean the solid amber one is to let you know something is wrong before it goes really wrong. Blink amber is a really sign and you should shut your car down and wait for a tow. A red one oh boy better hope you are under warrenty or better start prepping to buy a new car. Also if your car has a check engine light it means its throwing codes. A car throwing codes is way easier to fix than a car that isn't throw code but is still running rough is a whole another level of expensive. Also 90% of this can be fixed by having a OB2 scanner that you just keep in your car, that way you can know if its something that can wait.

Helps to understand basic automotive to avoid the headache/anxiety from the dash lights. Just plug in an ECU reader, and it'll give you the error code(s). A simple Google search of the error code (with year and make of vehicle) will then give you an idea of what's going on with the vehicle. Some times you can get lucky and fix it yourself, other times you need to find yourself a (trustworthy) mechanic. An engine light could be as simple as your gas cap being open, to a sensor issue, or an engine misfire. Good luck !

It's funny how our vehicles can give us directions across the world, show us the tire pressure, and the temp outside, but they still use a dummy light to make us aware there is a problem with the engine. All this damn tech and the vehicle still can't give us detailed info. 🤷
@greyfox7856917 күн бұрын
I find it does, but you have to buy a code reader. Most of the time it leads me straight to the problem, or close enough to figure it out.
@Sashazur17 күн бұрын
Obviously manufacturers could spell out exactly what’s gone wrong on the screen, instead of making you hook up a code reader. In fact many cars have special diagnostic modes that basically already do that, but the info isn’t provided to owners, only dealers and mechanics. I guess if there was a bigger market demand for the feature we probably would see it happen, but since half the time the check engine light goes on it’s because of a loose gas cap, maybe it’s not worth it!
@cerealkiller434117 күн бұрын
@greyfox78569 yes, I understand that, I have a code reader myself. But with all the tech in vehicles now a days you shouldn't have to need one anymore. Roughly $150 scanner will give you the codes and/or the description. They really can integrate that into the vehicle.

Time for the trusty diagnostic dice. Broken wire? Bad sensor? Mechanical failure?

A follow up episode: Ok, i'll tell you what's wrong with me...P0171. There, I told you. - WHAT IS P0171??!! - I don't know. could be fatal, could be that you won't get as good mpg. All imma tell you is P0171. Then some more banter with different codes and how meaningless they are without testing a million other things.
@AndTeeter17 күн бұрын
If the computer can spit out a code. What can't is spit out the information that autozone tells you the code means too?
@tyrannosaurusimperator17 күн бұрын
Then you Google P0171. You find 10 different websites and half a dozen forums that are all vaguely disagreeing about the cause and how urgent it is to fix P0171.

My check engine light comes and I just ask it “what’s the most you ever lost in a coin toss” and it turns right off. Magical!
@Cymatic717 күн бұрын
Just stop at autozone and pull a code. 👍
@RespectKarma8717 күн бұрын
I've done that. They'll still charge you at the dealership because their diagnostic system is "superior" to auto zone's...What a SCAM!

Black electric tape covered up the check engine light on my old '91 Ranger. Mechanics wou!d clear it, a few miles down the road it came on again. Nothing wrong with the truck they could find. Bough it used in 1994 and kept it for a few years before trading it in, and never did get that light to stop coming on but it ran fine.

This reminds me of the car talk episode about the mysterious vanishing and reappearing check engine light, and the other where someone bought a car only to get it home and find a piece of tape covering the light.
@hondaxl250k03 күн бұрын
Wrap him in duck tape. Bit of tape over the light on my old van kept it running for 12 years. Lmao.

It’s because dealerships make their money off parts and service. Selling a vehicle is a one time purchase. Service is 5-6 years of return visits.

0:57 best part. If check engine light was a person I'd just ignore him :). Sometimes it's nothing a bad sensor something you don't care about. Or telling you to change the oil but you just changed it. Unless it's a brandnew car or something.

I had a Freightliner with dpf. Every time check engine popped up was no less than $500. About every 2 runs. It messed with my mental. Now everytime I see it, i get anxiety. 😅😅

This is why you buy an OBD scan tool BEFORE your car breaks.
@greyfox7856917 күн бұрын
Code 400 speed sensor is the code a Subaru trips if the battery is bad or you need to clean the ground straps. I say that as a warning to those before you buy a OBD scan tool. It is not going to play fair sometimes.
