The NBA gives its Finals MVPs to players with a favorable narrative, and who are almost always on the winning team... but what if the award was given to the player who was simply the best player that series? This is the 2010s breakdown of just that.

It’s crazy that we’ve been so hard on lebron for losing finals but, aside from his first two years with the heat, he’s been the most valuable player on the court in every finals he’s appeared in. I understand you gave it to KD twice, but honestly In terms of value, KD has steph warping the defense and allowing him to shine, and lebron was pretty much carrying his team. So I would say he’s always been the best player on the court if we’re just looking at how great of an impact he makes on his team.

@@semionjohnson1351 the point the original comment is making is that Kevin Durant had the easier role to play in both series. If you take him off the 2017 Warriors, I'm taking the Cavs, but it's still a competitive series. If you take LeBron off the Cavs, they obviously get swept with or without KD on the Warriors roster. Yes, KD's stats were nuclear in the 2017 finals, but LeBron still had only 1.6 fewer points per game shooting 55% from the field and 38% from 3, all while recording the first and only triple double average in the history of the finals.

@@semionjohnson1351 so it's a load of excuses when you tell the 2nd best player in the league, "go score," and the best, "go score, make the passes only you can make, and play elite help defense"? LeBron and KD have never been held to the same standard. I'm not sure how you can say someone who averaged only 1.6 fewer PPG while averaging about 5 more assists (which is at _least_ 10 more points generated), grabbing 12 rebounds per game, and recording excellent shooting splits and ultimately the first and only triple double in finals history is not the best player in a series. LeBron has always had more on-court responsibilities than KD (the only comparable occurrences being the 2014 season and the series vs the Bucks) and has never trailed KD by much in the one category of the game that everyone rightfully praises KD for: scoring.

Steph gets finals MVP in 2015. He was more efficient and that's what matters a lot, and it wasn't a fantastically defensively physical series like the Lakers vs Celtics one either. Also when it comes to when Durant beat LeBron for Finals MVP(which Durant deserved) I am sick and tired of this whole "But the Warriors were so overpowered in comparison to the Cavs... and LeBron's supporting cast..." stuff. Let's look at the actual stats. 2017 Durant 35/8/5 Curry 27/8/9 Klay 16/5/2 Draymond 11/10/5 LeBron 33/12/10 Kyrie 29/4/4 Love 16/11/1 JR Smith 12 PPG on 58% from three When you actually put the numbers out there, you realize that the Warriors weren't "overpowered" people just hyped up Draymond because he was a good defender, but you put all the stats next to each other, the Cavs were an even matchup for the Cavs and the ONLY team that was as stacked as them. People got pissed because LeBron was no longer the only player with a stacked team, the Warriors matched that and beat the Cavs and all the excuses started. The Cavs were just as overpowered as the Warriors, and the better team won. Enough with the "It was LeBron against all odds" stuff and disrespecting what Kyrie did that series as well as Love. Stuff like that is the reason why Kyrie wanted nothing more to do with playing with LeBron. That played into the next season. 2018 Durant 28/10/7.5 Curry 27/6/7 Klay 16/4/1 Draymond 9/6/8.5 LeBron 34/8.5/10 Love 19/11/2 JR Smith 9.5 PPG On a surface level you can go "See! The Warriors were super overpowered" but then you forget the narrative, the media all year was saying the Cavs would beat the Warriors if they just got a 6th man and playmaker and a solid 3 point shooter and such. Well the Cavs at the trade deadline got Jordan Clarkson(6th man for the Lakers putting up 14.5 PPG prior to the trade), Larry Nance Jr (known for his defense and athleticism), Rodney Hood(who was putting up 17 PPG on 39% from three before the trade) AND George Hill that was shooting 45% from three that season.. and then on top of that, landed Kyle Korver whom was putting up 10PPG off the bench for the Hawks, and then came to the Cavs and shot 48.5% from three on high volume for them. So LeBron had a pretty significant supporting cast, and depth on the bench. Whereas the only depth the Warriors had on their bench was Shaun Livingston and Iggy(whom was not the defensive threat he once was). In comparison, the Cavs put a very solid amount of roleplayers around LeBron for that season and Kevin Love bounced back strong that Finals series looking like his Timberwolves self as they tried to beat the Warriors. Give credit where it's due, instead of going with the "But the Warriors had 10 superstars and LeBron had Smush Parker and Kwame Brown" perspective. Also back when Kobe had Smush and Kwame and couldn't carry the Lakers past the Suns, you didn't hear "Well Kobe has no one, it's not his fault." you heard "see this is why Nash is the MVP and Kobe isn't, Nash makes his teammates better and Kobe can't." as the narrative. But when it's LeBron no matter if he has two other superstars with him, when he struggles he "needs help". Just give credit where it's due. Nobody took credit away from the Bulls when Jordan won his first ring against an injured Lakers team, no one took credit from Detroit for sweeping an injured Lakers team. Nobody said the Celtics don't deserve credit when they beat the Lakers in 2009 because they didn't have Bynum or Ariza. Nobody looked at the Kobe and Shaq three-peat and went "Well that championship against the Nets doesn't count because their team was just so much stronger than the Nets....". Give credit where it's due and don't just flip the narrative cause LeBron loses.

@carrastealth
@carrastealth 3 жыл бұрын
@@goated4718 Yeah precisely. In 2018 the Warriors were the better team and better structured team. But in 2017 the teams were evenly matched and the Cavs just got beat. People still not wanting to give credit where it's due is frustrating to say the least. The Cavs were also far and away the best, most stacked, and deepest team in the East in 2018, they just weren't a better team than the Warriors in the West. And yes, Steph and Durant were the Superstars, Klay was the all-star, and Draymond was the 'heart and soul' role player than benefited from the rest of the team. People that were acting like Draymond could go to a team and carry them to the playoffs and calling him the "4th superstar" were deluding themselves. Klay Thompson is another player that is an all-star, but he's not a superstar. So what the Warriors had, was a Western Conference equivalent to what LeBron had in the East when he won his Championships. Theirs was just homegrown and then a big time free agent signing(Durant) aka the dream of all those 'small market teams'. The truth of the matter is, the Thunder could have been the same kind of team the Warriors were had they never chose trading Harden over amnestying Perkins. Had the OKC Thunder kept their homegrown four(Westbrook, Harden, Durant, Ibaka). They'd have been "The Warriors" before the Warriors. But their front office made the wrong decisions, and the Warrior's front office made the right ones.

Dirk's shooting percentage in the 2011 Finals can be slightly misleading. Yes, he shot 41% for the Finals, but that partially had to do with him tearing the tendon in his left middle finger during game one (which plagued him throughout the series) and his flu game where he shot 6/19. He was also the focal point for the Heat's defensive scheme. He was usually either double teamed or guarded very closely. Whereas Wade was part of a "big three" featuring the best player in the league and Chris Bosh. This allowed him to roam more freely on offense and do more damage. Wade had the better numbers, without question. Dude had an incredible series! But overall I feel that Dirk had to overcome more obstacles to get the results he did, which is why I'd allow him to keep his Finals MVP. However, I can see the arguments on the other side.

He put up 35,8,5 on 55 where lebron put up 34,12,10 on 56 so... 2018 is a slightly better argument as their rebounds and assists were a little more compatible and he once again put up 50/40/90. Honestly I feel like atleast one of those years, lebron should have won

@@tdl8472 While Durant had the favor of other stars that benefited his efficiency, Brons stats are also inflated (especially assists and points) as he pretty much dominated the ball the entire time. So he was "fortunate" to not share the ball with another ball handling superstar. That would have kept his numbers down a bit. So it evens out imo and you can justify it for either one.

2012 goes to KD in my opinion, considering the lack of spacing and help from harden its remarkable how efficient he was while outscoring James. Lebron is generally a more efficient player since he averages 50% for his career and it makes sense because he takes almost all his shots in the paint, but that makes KD's stats more impressive since he outscored LeBron while being like 7% more efficient, KD was also 23 and had less help than LeBron.

no way i can agree with any list that only analyzes pure stats without context of what was happening. For instance the year Iggy won finals MVP should clearly have been Curry winning it. You don't put into context the defensive schemes by each team. The cavs strategy was to always blitz and trap curry off screen actions and allow the others to beat them. Curry being very unselfish will quickly give the ball up letting his team play 4 on 3. This led to high team efficiency because of Curry's value and quick decision making skills though many times not leading to a direct stat. this held true in the years Durant won MVP as well as the Cavs strategy remained the same blitzing curry as they thought getting the ball out of his hands was their best opportunity, allowing Durant to find himself in many 4 on 3 and 1 on 1 situations which probably is not a coincidence with the high efficiency. But back to before Durant Curry easily should have won that first MVP dealing with double teams all series while still putting up a good stat line. Lebron on the other hand put up some ridiculous counting stats but the Warriors strategy was the opposite staying home on every player to not allow them to get going while allowing Lebron a 1 on 1 matchup the entire series. As a testament to Iggy Lebron's shooting efficiency was terrible and led to terrible team efficiency. Though Lebron put up huge stats his team posted numbers well below average.

But then you get into a the conversation of, “did this player’s huge stats prohibit their team from doing well, or is the team just that bad on their own” I mean, when you’re second best scorer is Mozgov, you’re team isn’t good, and won’t be able to compete with a finals caliber team. Lebron has put up huge numbers no matter where he goes, so how could his huge numbers all of a sudden caused his teammates to perform poorly? Good players do well with what they receive and even with LeBron outlet passes, they couldn’t shoot well. A player can only be at fault for passing if it’s either: a pass with the clock expiring, or passing when they’re wide open/have an easy path to drive. “Context” has a just a code word for narrative like half the time, because if having teammates that suck regardless of what you do can bring down your odds, anything can. LeBron didn’t prevent the Cavs from scoring, they just suck and have won like 40 games in total the last two years without him. Also, if you can shit on someone because they’re team can’t shoot well, you can shit on players who did really well because the rest of their team was that awesome. For example, “context” shows that KD was only as good as he was because of the splash bros being next to him, and on any other team, would have seen drops in all categories because he could be double teamed. LeBron overachieves with teams who aren’t that great without him, that’s value

@@holdenfegan1613 Except your are still not addressing the fact that he was woefully inefficient in that series, shooting below %40, a terrible 3pt percentage, had a high turnover total, and a huge usage rate. If you are using that much of the percentage and are playing at that inefficient of a level than your team will struggle not matter what caliber of teamates. Also if you go back and watch the film you will see him in single coverage the vast majority of the time. If he would have been more efficient against the single covers it would have forced the double teams and opened up his team for much better opportunities. On the flipside Curry was forcing help on the majority of his touches and look how many wide open good looks and rim runs it led too. That is Value. Lebron is Amazing and deserves some finals mvps, but not this one, Sorry. Curry was by far the most valuable player in that series.

BQ PRODUCTIONS I agree on the high turnover rate and poor 3. LeBron should have still been able to pass to teammates a little better and he should’ve stuck to what makes him great, his inside scoring. But when you’ve got ass teammates, sometimes you gotta carry when your second best teammate has zero all star appearances and no votes for any accolade, who’d be the 6th man for the other team. The problem with the video is that it leans too heavily on average stats to determine who was the best player in that series. What if a player's contributions went beyond the stats (e.g. Iggy's D, Durant's timely shot-making, Lebron's heroics) or a player's Final averages look bad because of just one bad game in that 7-game series? I watched all of these series: - Kobe was not the best player on the floor against Boston. Not only was his average FG% incredibly low, but he shot horribly in Game 7, when he was needed the most. I'd give it to Pau Gasol. He was better on average, had less variance, and shot a bit better than Kobe in the last game (Kobe was 6 for 24!). - Every time against Durant, Lebron had a better series. He was more involved in his team's offense, played better D, and had better numbers. Durant didn't have to try hard to do well, since the Cavs couldn't D him too hard and risk leaving Klay or Steph open. He had an easy time, which inflated his numbers. - The rest are ok.

2015 I gotta disagree with. If lebron was more efficient or if they got to a game 7 then I'd agree, but lebron didn't even shoot 40% from the field. He was essentially just shot chucking (I don't blame him as there wasn't really another quality offensive player to give shots to) he shot almost 33 shots per game, so that 36 ppg average isn't quite as impressive as it seems in the box score.

its interesting that you mention lebrons heavier load in 2015 finals due to injuries and being the only "star" on the team. WHile the same thing can be said about dirk in 2011. He was the focus point of the heats defense and with context the numbers still look very impressive, while wade was the second option on a team with 3 great players. I usually can get behind your arguments, but i think youre just wrong here. Wade played great but WITH CONTEXT Dirk played better.

I have to disagree, Lebron was no star that series but Dirk had three "stars" even if they weren't they were in that series while Wade did a carry job. I see what u mean and I'm fine with that argument tbh it makes sense but its just 50/50 but yeah it could go either way depends on opinion

I disagree that the 'best player' is the one with the highest stats. Sometimes it's a good way to separate a close MVP race though. It's why I didn't rate Westbrook's triple double MVP year. It was a lot of empty stats.

Imagine winning a finals MVP because you held LeBron to 36 PPG, 13 RPG and 8.8 APG while his best teammate was timofey mozgov. if a finals MVP would ever go to a player on a losing team that would have been it.

Take stats as major reason for mvp something like take number of chips for conversation of goat. Yeah, you must have pretty nice stats but it's only numbers. You should see all games in finals series for real reason who was mvp at that moment of time. Lbj could beat all the stats in regular, playoffs and may be in finals but it's make him only statpadding hero. And for people who saw how played mj or kobe he still lose more finals than drove in finals his team to victory.

Championships are a team reward. Individual stats are definitely the best metric for this... the problem is, of course, they're going to be skewed by your team makeup. If your team sucks and relies upon you for the overwhelming majority of your offense and defense, yes your stats will be better. However, a good team will simply plan around your team's deficiency and shut you down. Until (maybe) very recenty LeBron James was faster than everyone that's as strong as him, stronger than everyone as fast as him, and outstanding at kicking it out to teammates when he gets doubled. Consequently, he's generally the best player on the court. One person (Iguadola) *LITERALLY* got the MVP because he managed to somewhat contain LeBron's domination in the Finals.

@@lionelsteele007 Man, Lbj as great as it possible. And his game sometime out of this world. But let's take it deeper. With all his athletic abilities for SF or PF he playing on Guard position in offense and that's make stat like assist great when other players goes to spot for shoot with other side in defense he doesn't run with guard, he play at the rim with his physical abilities and has nice stats in rebound. So when you look a little bit deeper you can see that all Lbj stats is great but this greatness is only about breaking the stats in right position at offense and defense. When I'm talking about MJ or Mamba I don't want to find some excuses for their loses. Cause they lost playoff series like MJ or lost finals like Mamba. They were leaders who took it persanally and don't wanna find somebody in their team who doesn't help them enough for win. With all Lbj stats all his loses is about his teammates who doesn't help King enough for triumph. Try to understand my point, man. And one more, how in this world with bad team you can go throw playoff to final in three series with the best teams in conference? I think it's simply impossible. Maybe first round, ok. Maybe with big luck second round. But not conference final.

I would honestly give LeBron 2014 and maybe 2015. But 2017 and 2018 I would give it to Curry over KD. Curry was drawing 7 TIMES AS MUCH DOUBLE teams as KD and still almost averaged a 30 point triple double as a PG.

Man, KD was so freaking good in the 2010s, it just makes me mad that he going to the Warriors changed the way we see him, since his play changed. He was still incredible, but if I compare those years with say, his 2013-2014 season, I get kinda sad that we didn't continue to see that. It just got too easy (for lack of a better expression). Also, I missed the 2016 Warriors style of play.
