On the most part it's fairly superficial. What did Sun and moon actually change? Gyms aren't actually "gone", since Trials are essentially gyms re-tooled to not just be about battling (but all ultimately end in a boss battle), there's still an E4, villanous team, and even saying "The story was good" isn't a new thing, because gen 5 exists. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they didn't do anything new, but it is worth considering what they have done properly.

Things that were optional in previous games--like the trainer school--are forced upon you in this game. After you're done with the tutorials, the Rotom Pokédex tells you EVERYTHING you need to know. And during battles it tells you the type weeknesses and strengths. On top of this, the map marks where your next destination is, and blocks any other route forcing you to go only one way, in contrast with other games that would let you explore a bit, or even let you challenge the gym leaders OUT OF ORDER. On top of this, the UNSKIPPABLE CUTSCENES are way too long. After the E4, it took forever before I had a chance to save. And the opening cutscene seemed longer than any FF game's opening cutscene. These cutscenes only slightly get better throughout the game. The ONLY redeeming quality is the story. Now, have YOU played the game? 'Cuz I don't think you have, based on not noticing ANY hand holding or linearity.

The biggest problem with game freak is twofold: A) They don't listen to the fanbase or critics and thus don't actually make improvements or learn from their mistakes, and B) Part of this, they also like to try dictating WHO should get to enjoy the games, since they always give Gen I special treatment - even when they try celebrating all gens, most gens get little more than character cameos while Kanto gets all the important things. They also love to remove good features over and over.

Lol. Someone's butthurt. Nice try at invalidating a criticism. They SHOULD listen to their fans, in the very least to get some level of feedback on what they do. Consider for a moment: This generation, beneath the hood, is not as good as it looks. 4 battle types have been dropped, and they have been so incompetent at optimization that the games which used to be able to roughly handle 6 pokemon on the field now struggle when there are only 4 out - 3 in Totem Battles. In what world is that acceptable? The removal of DexNav has removed an incredibly useful feature, and SOS chaining is neither as precise, nor useful, as the DexNav was. They did not fix any problems with the GTS, which have been famous since its introduction. The removal of the PSS is a huge step down, at least for communicating with online friends. In order to trade with online friends, you now have to open a menu, go to a special location through its options, select to Link Trade, then find them in a list of all your visitors. Contrast to the PSS, where you just had to go online and find them in your Online Friends list. Hyper Training, one of the things they introduced, is not as useful as first thought because it does not increase IVs themselves, and is limited to level 100 Pokemon...in a game with the Gen V exp system, which means you get less exp for defeating lower-level enemies (thus making level 100 harder to access) Alolan forms, an interesting concept, have been used as an excuse not to make new pokemon, and their implementation was only for generation I pokemon. And in some cases, it didn't even get applied to entire lines, thus defeating the very concept they were going for. And as an additional irritation, non-Alolan pokemon can breed Alolan forms. Their idea of it being an example of real evolution had been squandered by their inability to implement it properly. And let's not consider new pokemon introduced. We got about 81 new pokemon this generation. 20 of which are legendary. Nearly a quarter of the new pokemon are legendaries. That's not okay. And to make matters worse, some of these legendaries EVOLVE. Which makes collecting livingdexes unnecessarily difficult. Making matters worse, on that matter, the distribution is such that generaiton I pokemon outnumber Alolan pokemon in their own native rregion. That is very clear pandering.

Damian Freeman The removal of the PSS was necessary now that Pokémon is going to the Switch, so they had to re-tool EVERYTHING concerning online connections. Unfortunate, but understandable. Same goes to most touch screen features such as the DexNav, which will require some clever re-implementation in a single-screen format in order for it to be as efficient as it was in ORAS. S.O.S Chaining seems like the mechanic they came up with in the meantime as they begin to prepare to shift the SuMo engine onto the Switch. As for the number of new Pokemon, Your Mileage May Vary on that end. We are getting closer and closer to hitting the quadruple digits and many fans were already claiming that there were too many to keep track of all the way back in Gen 4, when there were only 400 something mons. Alolan (and any possible future regional variants found in the future) seem more like a way to keep making SOMETHING that's new as well as memorable. As for the Gen 1 pandering...you were surprised by that? Game Freak has ALWAYS pandered to Gen 1. Even Gen 2 pandered to Gen 1...

So unfortunately, they don't have a particularly good excuse for this. Moving to the switch in the future should not be used as an excuse for going backwards on the current games that aren't ON the switch. We also have no confirmation of a main series game being on the Switch yet, either. It's a bit like saying "We plan on moving to diesel locomotives in 3 years, so we're not going to put the coal in the bunkers now." No, I was not surprised by the Gen I pandering. But I was still highly disappointed in them for doing that. It's why I stated this as one of their failures - they dictate who should get enjoyment out of the franchise by by and large ignoring anyone who came in later. If they listened to feedback, they would probably stop doing that, or at least be fairer in their callbacks.

The difference between versions is that the games have version exclusive pokemon which encourages players to wtrade with each other. The stories between them are almost the same with some minor differences like which legendary you'll encounter in the story and sometimes what gym leader you'll battle.

Like I didn't used Mega Evolution, I don't use the Z moves and don't have to unlike the Mega Evolutions, the game actually looks good, the environments are beautiful to look at, you don't have to build HM Slaves anymore, the bad guys maybe aren't threatening but at least are funny. And what characters do you find annoying? Hau? Yes, he is a bit too easy go lucky but I don't want to impale him with extreme violence unlike the FOUR idiots that followed you in XY. I'll admit, these games aren't as good as Gen 2 (remastered) or 5, but at least they are better than gen 1, 3, 4 and 6. But to be honest, I didn't finished sun moon yet, maybe the ending is awful. I don't know.

I disagree that GameFreak doesn't change. Sun/Moon is a prime example of them changing meta game for the sake of changing meta game. In fact, it's the only thing they chance each Gen. And most of the changes didn't need to happen. Like Gengar's Levitate getting changed for Cursed Body. :(

its either a nerf or a buff, but really that's not a major change, its just balancing for the competitive meta game and every competitive game needs proper balancing, its still not actual change. changes would be games like mystery dungeon or Pokémon snap, those are good examples of different games on the same franchise, far different from giving gengar a mega evolution to buff him on the main games only.

There's actually a valid reason for releasing different versions of the same game each gen. It's not to double their money (as most people only buy one version anyways) it's to force players to cooperate. Pokemon's catchphrase is "Gotta catch'em all" which can only be done by trading with players that bought the other version of that gen. Yes folks, the truly sinister purpose behind releasing multiple versions of one game is to force children to play with each other rather than alone.

The funny thing is that even though there are a lot of similarities in the story line and battles are still turn based, every generation has brought something new to the battle mechanics that often meant that players had to change up their strategy. Gold and Silver brought us Dark and Steel types as well the ability to hold items, Ruby and Saphire brought abilities, Diamond and Pearl made physical and special moves decided by the moves and not by what type they were, Black and White made TMs no longer one time use, X and Y brough the fairy type as well as mega evolutions and Sun and Moon brought us Z moves. Combine this with the slew of new items, attacks and pokemon that each generation brings.

Wait! You can cast only one status effect at a pokémon at once. Given, as you said, Entei is paralyzed, there is no possibility afaik to cast sleep on it. Every status altering attack will fail or at least the status altering effect will be ignored. One exception to this is, when the affected pokémon uses "rest" or a similar attack, in which case the status effect is healed an replaced bei sleep for two rounds, and wakes up afterwards with no status effect at all.
