Even in-facility it seems he's pretty bad at his job and always doesn't show up on time. The only work we see him do is being a physical labor lackey. The only thing that's relevant is whether or not Walter White would have a place in Black Mesa, which, considering he's a genius when it comes to chemistry, crystallography, proton radiography, etc., is an absolute yes. Whether he'd have as much skill with a shotgun or crossbow or unidentified radiation laser as Gordon, well, who knows.

Gordon freeman isn't a mute. He's supposed to be you. Your voice and reactions are his. For example, if you saw a zombie for the first time and went, "dude that's cool let's kill it" but gordon reacted "that's scary what the hell" it would ruin it

That's actually quite true. Valve stated that the reasons for making him mute, is so the player can put themselves in Gordon's shoes... er... suit. He canonically does speak, and he does have his own motivations. It's just that they are left ambiguous and thus up for player interpretation.

I'm pretty sure everyone here knows that, but he does have established lore too. He's a graduate from MIT in Theoretical Physics. Certain NPCS know him and have established/implied history with him, which is suggested through some dialogue. Short version is, yes Freeman is you in the sense that you're playing him and get to control what he does, but he's not YOU the person playing the game. You're just controlling what Freeman does and how he reacts. You're practically possessing him. Otherwise none of the stuff before would make sense unless if he had amnesia or something like that.
