Difficult, arguably it would all add up to one case but they would get a more severe sentence based on the longevity/ severity. The closest we see to physical abuse is Vernon pulling his hair (movies) and Petunia aiming a frying pan at his head (books) and there are no mentions of sexual abuse, which are the ones that tend to get longer sentences. Obviously, the neglect, food deprivation (he had a can of vegetable soup as his meals for the day) and locking him up are all heavy hitters, plus the years of emotional abuse would go towards this, but it would likely be argued as one case. Also, from PoA onwards, it did calm down a bit, although it was still primarily twelve years of abuse.

Something that is not mentioned in the movies is the fact that Umbridge was the one who sent the dementors after Harry at the start of the movie, in an attempt to get rid of him. This wasn't known or approved by anyone in the ministry. This is a first degree attempt of murder, as well as child engagement because of Dudley, and she would probably get fired (if the ministry wasn't so corrupt). She also tried to use this as evidence of Harry doing magic while being a minor. This would have ended with Harry losing the right to use magic. I'm not sure of what is the exact name of this crime nor the punishment.

Entrapment maybe?
@cazzabojangles5 ай бұрын
I'd be interested to see where the law stands on sucking out someone's soul and whether it is the same charge as murder. I'm guessing yes, but it could also be put down as a severe disability of sorts. The removal of a person's soul resulting in a vegetative state could be put down as classified under a category similar to grievous bodily harm. Anyone found guilty of murder has a life sentence in the UK, regardless of the age of the victim. GBH offences are categorised into two main types; Section 18 (meant it) and Section 20 (arguably didn't mean it) offences under the Offences Against the Person Act 1861. Section 18 GBH is the more severe of the two, involving really serious harm with the intent of causing bodily injury, which would count for Umbridge. The maximum sentence for GBH (and considering it would have been unprovoked, to a minor and to the further end of life altering, I think it's safe to say that would fall on her) in section 18 is also life imprisonment. The fact that Harry didn't lose his soul was purely down to him, it being unsuccessful woudln't do much in her favour. At any rate, she used the dementors as a weapon without the Minstry's consent, which is a whole other kettle of fish. I assume that the combination of the two would result in a sentence the same length as murder, but under a different name. In short- life inprisonment.

Regarding Umbridge being charged with "Administering drug with intent", it was mentioned in Goblet of Fire's movie adaptation that use of Veritaserum on a student was forbidden, meaning there's dire consequences for doing so. Not to mention that "War Crimes" charge was a nice touch. Of course Voldemort would have the biggest rap sheet due to his VERY long list of crimes. Another bunch I've always wanted to bust! Let's begin: The Dursley family: Now first of all, this would be bittersweet and a bit poignant for young Harry since they're his only family, but I believe it would be for the best and the chance to move on with his life. The Dursleys clearly have a huge dislike for Harry, and possibly the Potter family altogether, to the point where he's seen as a pest by them. And judging that there also might be complaints about them by the public, there is a possible chance they would be cited. Petunia and Vernon will do time in prison for 15 years and 9 months, with young Dudley being bumped off to relatives and the possibility of a restraining order against their estranged nephew. I'd like to see their dumb faces as the word "guilty" is read! Dolores Umbridge: Fellow Harry Potter fans, we have all the evidence we need on the vile devil of a teacher known as Dolores Umbridge. It appears that she has not only been abusing her power & position in the Ministry of Magic, she has inflicted torture on innocent children and had intent to even commit crimes against humanity and rule as Minister as a dictator fascist regime. Umbridge is a significant danger to society and might even be declared insane, so I agree at the prospect of Umbridge spending the rest of her life, in Azkaban.... Lord Voldemort*: For this monstrous enemy, I, unfortunately, couldn't find out if the Wizarding World had capital punishment in modern times. I doubt a death sentence wouldn't even bother since he has his Horcruxes. What I would recommend for the Dark Lord is eternal imprisonment and punishment in some kind of tomb or place of confinement like the crystal sarcophagus in Scooby-Doo, the Phantom Zone in Superman and Imhotep's tomb in The Mummy. He's too dangerous for this world in every way. The Wizarding world will never allow him to be released, for he will arise a walking curse, a plague upon wizardkind, an unholy consumer of power with the strength of a hundred wizards, power over the darkness, and the glory of EVIL! *AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle, You-Know-Who and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named

I feel like the 22 years that Umbridge got during her time at Hogwarts and the 22 years that the Dursleys got arent quite the same. Surely Umbridge should have had a lot more for the torment if so many kids. Also, isn't the use of a forbidden curse like a life or death sentence all on its own?
@Mary_Studios5 ай бұрын
As long and you're using it on a human yes it is a life sentence. However if you use it on a goblin, troll, centaur, or even spiders you're perfectly fine and won't get sentenced. Wizirding law at it's finest.

I’m charging her with the cruciatus curse. She was stated to be reveling in the idea by the book, a horrible twisted smile on her face as she describes she also sent the dementors after him that summer to suck out his soul. She was definitely going to use it, and she definitely would have been prosecuted for it

Then: If James Bond's No. 1 Enemy Ernst Stavro Blofeld Was Charged For His Crimes This guy could get charges of grand larceny, aiding & abetting terroristic acts, aggravated theft, illegal possession of explosive devices, federal extortion, multiple counts of air piracy, breaking the Nuremberg principles in You Only Live Twice, attempting to kill livestock, identity fraud, escaping lawful custody, organised crime, sexual coercion of Madelaine Swann & finally, count up all the times he tried to kill James Bond. And that's just the stuff I know about. If I forgot anything else, let me know, but hopefully, I've got all I could think of.
