Thinking is hard. Countries with thinkers are able to obtain sovereignty, freedom and rights. Just IN MY LIFETIME, these nations have deployed their ability to think to transform themselves from authoritarian states into democracies: In Southern Europe: Greece, Portugal, Spain In Asia: South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Philippines In Eastern Europe & the Balkans: nearly all of them (acknowledging the 1990s bloodletting of former Yugoslavia) In Central and South America: nearly all of them (again, lots of blood flowed, esp. 1960s - 1980s) Of course they are not all equally stable or prosperous. But this transformation has not yet happened (in an enduring way or at all) in Muslim Arab countries, African countries, Russia, Iran and others. What Israel owes the non-citizen Arabs between the river and the sea, in return for the renunciation of terror, is to provide conditions that allow them to live with roughly the same economic opportunity and political and religious rights, etc as those of their nearby cousins in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Egypt.

Rania, your tears require no apology. The situation fully warrants it. FWIW, that poem was so moving. It moved me not to give up (and to appreciate what I have ). Also, perhaps you will find some hope in the fact that it is very clear that the majority of ordinary people around the world feel as you do. We’ve seen the huge protests. People know what this tragedy really is. And I have never heard more criticism of Israel in my entire life. Just over a hundred years ago, the US Army was still slaughtering Native Americans, with few outsiders knowing or caring. Perhaps this time, mass outrage can put a stop to the genocide in Gaza.

This reminds me of a poem from a particularly dark summer just barely 100 years ago when African Americans were being terrorized on the streets and the world turned a blind eye, "If we must die, let it not be like hogs Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot, While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs, Making their mock at our accursèd lot. If we must die, O let us nobly die, So that our precious blood may not be shed In vain; then even the monsters we defy Shall be constrained to honor us though dead! O kinsmen! we must meet the common foe! Though far outnumbered let us show us brave, And for their thousand blows deal one death-blow! What though before us lies the open grave? Like men we’ll face the murderous, cowardly pack, Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back!"

I heard Dr. Alareer speak via the internet from Gaza to a meeting of hundreds of activists in the Islington Palestine Solidarity Group (that's in north London) a few weeks ago. He and his family were already sheltering (their home had been destroyed) and he said he could hear bombs dropping as he spoke to us. His talk was very inspiring. He told us that the people in Gaza knew about the demonstrations taking place across the world against this genocide and that it was important to them to know they were not forgotten. I was at the large demonstration called by Palestine Solidarity Campaign in central London yesterday (9th December 2023). I saw a lot of placards with his name and his poem on them. We must continue to confront our own leaders and take whatever action we can against the monstrous massacre that the Israeli state is committing. The British government is trying to stop our slogan 'From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free'. We won't be silenced. Free Palestine. 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸

Rania. I feel your grief, pain, and anger. I want to share my thoughts with you. As I listened to you, I could not forget another person who was killed many years ago. His name was Malcolm X Shabazz. (Full disclosure: I am an African American senior citizen who grew up during our U. S. Civil Rights period.) Next. I am reminded of a famous poem titled: "First They Came" pinned by Pastor Martin Niemoller. Please find that poem. Read it. African Americans have (for centuries) experienced what is currently happening in Gaza. So to you, I can add a line to the poem "First They Came". It would read, 'When they came for African Americans, I said nothing because I was not African American.' I heard you speak on the Gazans plight, but not one time did I hear you speak about the atrocities African Americans experienced even though your co-host Eugene Puryear co-hosted this show with you. He watched you tear up, but still said nothing about my people. I have always said this: When people speak opinions, they should also know history...not current history. I am glad you are speaking out against this Israel and Gaza war...against the war crimes Israel is committing. Just know this: angrily speaking out against Joe Biden will not stop this war, but rather push people...especially Palestinians - Arab Americans to not vote. Therefore, we wind up with a trump for the president of the United States. trump who we know supports Israel 100 percent. Click here to learn Malcolm X Shabazz thoughts about Jews and Arabs in a 1963 CSPAN interview. This is just for your information. THINK! www.c-span.org/video/?318826-1/1963-interview-malcolm

Many probably already know "Invictus" by William Earnest Henley. It offered comfort and inspiration to Nelson Mandela (and probably many more about whom we will never know). I hope that it can console at least one person reading it and help at least one person remain steadfast in the while in pain over how hopeless the world seems to be. Out of the night that covers me, Black as the pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds and shall find me unafraid.
