"Where are the swasticas?" My theory: Often trolls who want to insert those are alone. There is no open community behind trolling things by addind swasticas. It's more of an underground movement, where no one knows anyone else. Each individual feels like belonging to a movement, but there really is no community. I think anonymity plays a big role. The intent is to be sneaky. To annoy others without them having any clue who did it. This brings a feel of power, as the troll them has complete knowledge of the situation while others don't, hence he's feeling as if he was above them. However on r/place you could only place one pixel every 10 minutes making it impossible for a single person to create anything. And of course here comes the lack of communication in the troll community; there simply is no subreddit where people who would like to put a swastica on place would meet to plan. Such a sub would not make sense because a) anonymity, see above and b) the point of trolling is to do it everywhere, not just on one dedicated sub. This is such a special case, requiring a coordinated attack from groups of trolls, that simply never really existed before.

Interestingly no one mentions bots in their coverage of r/place. After the first 24 hours it became fairly evident that there are a lot of bots defending certain parts of it and as time went on and bots got better a lot of the new art was made by bots. It's hard to tell how many bots there were but I would say that without them the black void would be a lot bigger.

Man, I remember our Dashie. We defended and held on to that pony with clutches of steel. No one could put a dent in her! She was a pretty significant size relative to those around her, too. We had some pretty good alliances too; most of our neighbors were our allies. My favorite event was the numerous attacks on OSU. While I admittedly was on on the attacking end somewhat, I have to give then kudos for their dedication. pxls.space is the best new one. It has bot protection now and you can place every 2 and a half minutes. The current superpower is the Axis (Prussia, Finland and Ukraine) which established their dominance over the Allies (Green Lattice, OSU, and various things in the top right). The black void is still lurking around (you can see some cracks opening and Aku might be their mascot), and the blue corner is there too but they keep getting stamped out by Austria (which is joined with the Axis).

In one of the lesser-known examples, I was one of the many who helped organize fans of the Ace Combat video games to put the logo of an organization in the games, ISAF, on r/place. We were overwritten by fans of the Montreal Canadiens, but both communities worked together to rebuild Ace Combat elsewhere. In the bottom-right, we put down the logo of Project Aces, the internal team at Bandai Namco that makes Ace Combat games, as well as "r/acecombat". We were vandalized a bit right before it all shut down, but I'm still very proud of what we managed to accomplish. r/place truly was lightning, the briefest moment in history but a beautiful one.
