When I grew up in China in the 80’s, we didn’t have this habit of snacking. We eat three meals a day and that’s it. Breakfast in the morning around 6:30am , lunch at 12 and dinner at 7. And that’s it. if you are hungry in between, just be. not like here in USA, people have to eat something nonstop!

It's the amount of refined carbs that are prevalent in all our food! It makes people constantly hungry, which is so sad :( I've been overweight my whole life bc I could not control my cravings. But finally have committed to keto and it has totally opened my eyes to the carb addiction many of us suffer from! It's actually gross how much sugar is allowed to be added in a single serving size of some stuff

So the second part of my story is after I moved to USA, I got addicted to all the bread, pizza, crackers and etc. Now I am Americanized - size wise. and losing weight is harder than ever even thought I am constantly reading labels and counting calories. @@ilooser278 Unfortunately, keto isn't the ultimate solution. You do need carbs, but not just any carbs. You need unprocessed ones, mostly fibers and lower amount of natural sugars such as in fruit, potatoes, beans, rice etc. You don't, however, need any processed ones. Then couple all of this with physical exercise and you have the solution.

To clarify the answer to this question. The traditional Chinese diet does include rice for sure, BUT with lots of vegetables, fermented foods, fish and WITHOUT the added junk, sugar (as in soda) and GMO soy oil. So it really depends on what you are adding to the rice and the type. If you only ate brown rice, you would deplete your zinc and other minerals due to phytates and if you only ate white rice, you'll develop Beru Beri (B1 deficiency). On the glycemic index, rice ranges between 50-90 depending on the type of rice (wild, brown to refined white) so you have to look at the whole picture: the type of rice, quantities and what else you are eating with it.
@gentilewarrior3 жыл бұрын
So it's more about junk food and GMO then.. I don't drink sugary beverages, but I do eat a lot of fish, meat, rice, beans, soups, veggies, fruits, avocados and tortillas, blood sugar near perfect, no high blood pressure, resting heart beat around 45-50 BPM. I'm part Mexican native Taruhumara from Chihuahua. I have Cardio for days, maybe it's genetics, who knows.

I’m sorry, but traditionally only people lived on the coast ate lots of fish, but, look at the map, China doesn’t have long long coast line, over 80% or more people actually didn’t have access to sea food at all. I figured that rice is okay to eat as long as you are eating enough healthy vegetables to help utilize the sugars in rice instead of storing them as fat, fermented foods and healthy fats also help reduce the negative effects of high glycemic rice. A dear friend of mine moved to the US from Taiwan in the late 80's when he was a teenager; he said he was skinny like most people in Taiwan and their daily diet consisted of a small bowl or two of rice, lots of vegetables (some sauteed, some boiled, fresh or canned), some meat/fish, or soups with vegetables, some meat/fish, with/without ramen noodles. 15 years later when he went back to Taiwan for a visit in early 2000's, he noticed many young Taiwanese a lot chubbier than he'd ever seen before and that lots of pastry shops, bakeries, and boba drink cafes had sprouted everywhere. From the mid-90's internet boom and onward, people in general have become more sedentary by having their eyes glued to a screen. Couple this with all the sweet treats or highly processed carbs plus the snacking of such carbs and we have a recipe for plumpness.

My wife is Asian and her entire family eats it with every meal and in high quantities(probably 75% percent of their plate is rice). My thought is, the foods that they eat with it are good wholesome foods, basically veggies and meat. Unlike here we have junk food. The trend I see is not the the rice being bad it's the other foods people eat along side it, just like you demonstrated in this video. Just wanted to clarify, Chinese don't have natto or miso. They are Japanese food. Also, growing up in China in the 90s, I think the problem with obesity wasn't really with fried foods (or rice), but the increasing amounts of processed foods, snacks and drinks. When we were little, our snacks were things made from nuts, sticky rice, or dried fruits, beans, etc. I didn't eat a lot of candies, and a lot of candies were made from berries, sesames.... Drinks were like bean or plum soups instead of pepsi or 7up. We had lots of home-made fried food, noodles and buns, and they didn't really affect us much. But I think our lifestyle was a lot more active though. Even for people who had office jobs, they probably biked to work or kids' schools everyday. With lunch breaks, that'll be at least 4 trips in a days. We also walked longer distances and cardio exercises were common. So maybe people nowadays think carbs are bad because our lifestyles have become a lot more sedentary due to various reasons.

Also, the French and Italians use high quality, unfortified/unenriched, flour in their carb goodies. Makes it easier to digest and more usable by the body. Almost 95 percent of the white flour in the United States is enriched with iron and four of the B vitamins: thiamin, niacin, riboflavin and folic acid. By contrast, fortified flour may contain folic acid in amounts that exceed those present in whole-wheat flour. Calcium, a nutrient that is not naturally present in wheat kernels or whole-wheat flour, is another nutrient that may be present in fortified flour. There has been correlative studies done about the link between enriched/fortified flour and obesity.

They use higher quality unenriched/unfortified flour. Look up the effects of flour fortification. Makes you crave more of it and also makes it much harder to digest.

People in the US keep stacking food once a week in their house. When they're bored, they take a snack from the cabinets and fridge. In China, they go to the market or grocery almost everyday and barely stack in the fridge because they'd rather eat fresh food and not frozen. Everything is fresh. You won't see "Fresh Frozen Food" like in the US. There's no such thing as fresh frozen food. It's either fresh or frozen.

When rice is combined with a lot of meat, that's where the problem lies. It's possible that these people are eating more fish and vegetables with their rice than pork and beef. You have to make a choice, more meat and vegetables or more rice and vegetables but you can't have a ton of rice and a ton of meat together. It increases blood sugar much more than rice on its own.

Part of the problem is also the combination of rice and meat. Rice on its own with small amounts of meat is fine but when you increase your meat consumption (which has happened in China) then the combination of meat and rice wreaks havoc. Meat and vegetables on their own are fine but when meat is combined with a high carbohydrate diet, it's just not ideal.

I doubt that. Now that we are starting to find out how the microbiome works, it becomes clear that much of what is good or bad depends on our own personal combination of bacteria. Not even identical twins share the same bacteria or proportions of bacteria. Some people will absorb almost every calorie they consume and seemingly get fat on air. While other people don’t. They have done studies with mice (people now too) and when the microbiome is changed, the fat mouse will lose weight even though diet and exercise did not change.

They have been eating unpolished rice for centuries. “White rice” or polished rice was introduced about 100 years ago to the upperclass. Also no one said being thin equates to being healthy. If you want to eat a small quantity of rice there is a way to prepare it that reduces the starch affect. You need to cook it with coconut oil then put it in the refrigerator and reheat it the next day. It appears all starchy foods are affected by cooling and reheating.

I noticed when i moved to the States the women may have the same bomber on the scale but much sloppier bodies, aka lumps and rolls that indicate a lack of muscle tonnage, and then also very very large stomachs and flat butts, which I'm learning indicates insulin resistance!

Ate one meal a day, very easy to do when the food is bland vs all the delicious food we have back in Jamaica when your aunties can't stop feeding you! Bam, 5 months later I was 120 pounds with a 26 inch waist. After hearing my whole life that I was just a big girl like a Jamaican girl is meant to be. Nope! One thing in Jamaica to go with your point about the soft bodies of women in the US - youre right: In Jamaica most people have to walk to reach somewhere and will sweat nicely in the sun drinking plenty of fluids along the way, but in USA most people drive, don't drink water and there are hardly any hills or gradients in most towns and cities.
