What if you could switch between visibility and invisibility?
@pastasam40697 жыл бұрын
Anthony Sacarello that would be useless in most situations, because once you went invisible, such as if to hide from someone, you'd have no idea when you were safe because you can't see or hear anything, because sound and light can't hit your ear drums or retinas.
@OnEiNsAnEmOtHeRfUcKa7 жыл бұрын
You realise sound and light are two completely different things, right? Being invisible would not make you deaf. You'd still be blind though, and also still visible, ironically, due to the points made in the video - mainly clothing and dust.
@pastasam40697 жыл бұрын
OnEiNsAnEmOtHeRfUcKa You'd still be deaf, because the sound waves can't hit your eardrums. If light can't hit your retinas, then sound wouldn't be able to hit your eardrums. They both involve EM waves hitting a part of your body. Yes, light and sound are two completely different things, but they travel in similar waves. The only real difference is that one is transverse and the other is longitudinal.
@OnEiNsAnEmOtHeRfUcKa7 жыл бұрын
PastaSam I'll concede they're somewhat similar, but I still disagree on the basis that the only required intangibility for invisibility is to visible light alone. In addition, light is also a particle. Besides, if we start arguing wavelengths, a lot of things get very messy very quick, particularly in regards to the brain.
@WhomisThou7 жыл бұрын
+PastaSam Sound is not an electromagnetic wave. It is a pressure wave in other words a mechanical wave/kinetic energy. Sound requires a medium to propagate and you still exist as a solid object. This means that sound waves bounce off of objects with mass (unless its a black hole) even if you you can't see it. That's how sonar works.

It's not about being invisible from within. It's simply being undetectable to the human eye. Like the invisibility cloak in Harry Potter, all we need is an object that bends the light around it effectively turning us invisible, but it can still be removed if we take it off. Like I said it's not about being invisible from within, but simply being temporarily undetectable by using an external device.

A invisibility suit would be more realistic than just magically turning invisible. Just because super powers are unlikely does not mean they are impossible. Here is some vague science for them: 1. Invisibility: scientists have developed metamaterials with the right molecular shapes for making objects invisible. It is fully possible (unlikely of course) that a human could develop a mutation which gave them an extra layer on their cells which would allow them to be invisible. This could interfere with fluids and nutrients coming in or out of cells but it could only be activated by the person's brain waves. 2. Psychic powers: there are materials which can direct specific types of energy, such as a material which interferes with/directs sound. If someone's cellular membrane had this additional mostly non-interactive layer then in theory they could use this to direct energy for these powers. Objects can be levitated if their electrical charges are aligned. Perhaps this can be done if someone can use their whole brain at the same time. 3. Super durability: while it is impossible for the human biology to have total super endurance, someone could very well have a mutation which grows an extra tough layer on their bones (it would need pores to allow access to the bone marrow). Also, honey badgers have super tough bullet resistant skin. The mutation is not far off. 4. Healing factor: totally possible. Flatworms can regenerate after being cut into a bunch of pieces. I know humans are much more complex but with technology it is possible. 5. Super strength: a real person known as Uberboy in Germany has the strength of six normal people. It is likely this is not the upper limit for humans. 6. Electrical powers: training allows people to release more electricity than normal people. Maybe with an eel mutation... alright, that one is stupid. 7. Super speed: goes along with super strength, unless talking about speed like the Flash. I'll admit that's not possible for a human without technology. 8. Resistance: I have hypothesized that with an extracellular layer again one could have great resistance to say, heat and cold. I think some bacteria and plants have this. 9. Immortality: there is a biologically immortal jellyfish. Given how little we still know of science, I bet there is a way with technology. 10. Magic: pure speculation, but suppose some ancients were able to tap into a proposed 5th force of nature which operates at a scale of a few feet (similar to the human body size) and effectively have natural magic. I don't have scientific support, but I'm throwing it out there. 11. Technological powers: Obviously the Iron Man type super hero has a lot of support. I have a hypothesis on fusion which occurs near absolute zero, and I have some hope for that soon in the future. Point is, for every law in science, there is a loophole. There is a huge difference between unlikely and impossible.
@lagdance10 жыл бұрын
Immortality, the way genetic engineering is moving, i won't be surprised if this becomes very possible in the future. However being able to live for ever doesn't necessary mean you can't die. In fact did you know crocodiles and alligators are also immortals. They can literally keep growing until their internal organs stops keeping up with their external size. Would this happen to us if we were immortal? Maybe we stopped aging at our peak healthy age, but then do we just keep getting bigger?
@answerthequestion76448 жыл бұрын
What if you had the ability to generate a field of invisibility, rather than just turning yourself invisible? You could still put the field around yourself to turn invisible, but you could put it over your clothes, shoes, objects you pickup, and other people, and well, anything really. That way you wouldn't have to worry about dust or coffee stains, once they entered the field, they'd be invisible to. You'd just have to be careful where you put the field so that the ground beneath your feet doesn't disappear as well! And if you wanted to become visible again you could just shut down the field or shrink it to the size that nobody could see. The only problem left is not being able to see, a quick trip to a hunting store for an infrared scope and an elastic band to attach it to your head should fix that. Of course, you still wouldn't be able to use your power on very rainy or foggy days (people would be able to see the rain disappear into the field, thus see the outline of the field itself.) , but if you lived somewhere dry (as I do) like Nevada or Arizona, then that shouldn't be much of a problem.

SgtSupaman Yes, but the video itself is trying to explain how scifi like invisibility is unlikely due to physics. It didn't make up a physic law of field of invisibility. Of all the videos I've seen of this series, this is clearly the dumber. First of all, this is starting from the premise that your invisibility comes from the transparency of every living cell of your body, which isn't necessary. And what is worse, it attempts to create convenient random scenarios to give the connotation it desires, even when that takes to make over-the-top noises that would embarrass a five years old.

Oh, I got a good one. Air is a medium and light still bounces and refracts off it, and if you were invisible you would be a place where light does not refract thus making it so people can see you. Like if you have a glass of water and put a smaller glass inside, you can still see the glass inside.

@OnEiNsAnEmOtHeRfUcKa7 жыл бұрын
For something to be invisible, light passes through it, i.e. glass. For you to see something, light has to bounce off of the retina in your eye, creating an inverted image and an electrical impulse. The light cannot bounce off your eyes if it passes through them instead, so yes, you would still be blind.

OnEiNsAnEmOtHeRfUcKa Actually, you would be invisible, but things such as light would still touch you. You do not turn into a sheet of glass.

I'm pretty sure you would be able to see if you were invisible, just because your retina doesn't stop light doesn't mean light avoids it, your retina will detect the light going through it, what would happen is that the lenses in your eyes wouldn't focus the light, so in other words, you would see, everything would just be blurry though.

Ability to freeze/stop time? Regeneration?
@ctmmd30517 жыл бұрын
here's my theory: Stop Time: - That would mean everything stops, even yourself. - Let's suppose you CAN move, but you can't really move the particles around yourself, which means your heart stops and you can't breathe due to being unable to move oxigen because of the time stop. - Now let's suppose you CAN breathe and your heart still pumps, but you can't see anything because light itself also has a speed to travel, and since light is frozen, your brain can't process any images for your eyes - And finally let's suppose light can also move, people around you would see you teleporting every time you resume time, and that's it. Regeneration: - every time you are injured, there's no tell about how ACCURATE would be the regeneration, for example, if you get an amputated arm, when it grows back, you MUST make sure nothing is in the way, otherwise it would end up with an awkward form.

No it's saying that since your retina has to literally catch the light that enters your eye you can see. But if your retina were invisible (which means light passes through it) there would be no light for your retina to catch. Unless you had freaky floating eyes and optic nerves.
@jinglejanglers76567 жыл бұрын
But what if you could manipulate light to go into your eyes but around everywhere else? Including clothes?
@ahmedboubaker85147 жыл бұрын
your eyes wouldn't be invisible. They either reflect light so everyone will see them or they would be made of a Black body material that absorbs all radiation, like a Platinum cavity with a hole. But even then, people will see them as two black spots! So to be completely invisible you must be completely blind.
@jinglejanglers76567 жыл бұрын
ahmed boubaker but what if you could make light go into one tiny spot in your eye, so small it was invisible anyway?
@ahmedboubaker85147 жыл бұрын
Smart idea! but a tiny spot means less light entering, besides you won't be able to make full images
@jinglejanglers76567 жыл бұрын
ahmed boubaker but you'll be able to see something. You could adapt to that.
@ahmedboubaker85147 жыл бұрын
You were right though, you can see pictures from a pinhole, but to be able to see full pictures through it (using Petzval law) say from a 1 meter distance (focal distance) the diameter of the pinhole must be in the order of 1 micron. if you want to see further the hole size must get bigger so no invisibility. But seeing just 1 meter ahead is not a bad price for invisibility! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinhole_camera

Theorically, your retinas would also be invisible. Making them unable to catch light particles, therefore turning you blind.

A nice idea, but an inherently flawed one - 1) You can't see yourself or what's behind you, so you'll have no way of knowing how closely you match. 2) Even with a reference image, what are the odds you're going to be able to manually reproduce a photorealistic image on a 3d canvas? 3) Even if done "automatically", it's still only going to work from certain angles. 4) If you DO manage to create an intricate design that works for multiple angles, the illusion will be completely destroyed the moment you move even slightly.

I think a good workaround here would be to take a completely different approach. Minds are far easier to bend than light. Make it more like an illusion/SEP field form of invisibility. You wouldn't be invisible to technology, but I think that's a vast improvement over the drawbacks of not interacting with light at all.

Just because your skin and organs don't reflect light, it does not mean that the retinae cannot act as a light receptor anymore. The retinae can still receive light without reflecting it, and by receiving it, it can transmit information to our brain and we can still see.

I found this one a bit disappointing. There are so many more intriguing aspects of invisibility to discuss. Such as - when you eat, at what point does food stop being food, and become you (ie invisible)? And is feces invisible? Or would people just see the poo in your colon floating in air? The bit about being blind was the only really surprising and interesting fact here.

By looking at your profile picture, i can gather that you're a grown woman. I'm a 12 year old girl and i know that you can see through air because the particles that make up air are so separated, it allows you to go through it without effort. including light. that goes the same for water, except the particles are closer together, making it a little tougher to for light to go through. Why do you even watch scientific videos if you can't understand them. Try a cartoon instead. If you could even understand it. Older in some cases. The Invisible Man was first published by H. G. Wells in 1897. 117 years ago. The first appearance of Superman was Action Comics #1 published June 1938. 76 years ago. The original Flash first appeared in Flash Comics #1 in January 1940. Etc., etc.

There was a sci-fi show that dealt with this. I think it was the X-Files. It involved a genie and some guy wished to be invisible. He ended up getting run over by a car, died on the side of the street, and then wasn't found until a cyclist accidentally crashed into him and went over their handlebars. Really cool concept.

in the book series "wildcards" by rr martin(yes same guy who created GOT), some people have super powers(aces) and/or mutations(jokers) have these very same weakness and power limitations. there was a guy who could turn invisible (and his clothes), but became blind in the process. he could turn it off and on. but studied a form of zen meditation to memorize his surroundings when blind/invisible. the series of books added "science/reality" to using of super powers.

that is taking into account that your invisibility comes from your body. Unless you are wearing something that makes you invisible (ie Predator) or you generate a small ranged invisibility field (Invisible Girl) you would still be able to pick up light.

Honestly a stealthboy (basically makes you *almost* invisible via some form of tech) would be a good idea, or a very advance military cloak. Otherwise other forms of invisibility is camouflage, noise damper (passing cars, storms) and a huge crowd as extra
