It broke my heart in Basra, the British troopers were awesome. Their leadership though wasn't. They had pulled these men out of the town ceceding control of the city to the insurgents. Those men stayed in camp sleeping in what amounted cinder block bunkers for the individual. Taking incoming and being able to little or nothing about it.

One of my Grandfathers started WW2 as a Private, and ended it a Major. He fought Jerry from North Africa to over the Rhine. He said by 1944 all his replacements in his company only had two weeks training tops. He was an infantryman in the US Army. Make of that what you will. Use what Ukraine is doing now as a dry run for what our governments have planned for when it does go hot.

Yep. Technically speaking the A10 has more friendly fire casualties on its record than enemy kills. Infantry all love the A10... until they called one in for CAS... and were often murdered or wounded by the damn thing accidentally. The much vaunted GAU-8 Avenger it carried was criminally inaccurate and often ended up hitting friendlies nowhere near the intended target. Most surviving US forces that ACTUALLY saw / called in the A-10 said they would rather never see one on the battlefield ever again.

The US marines used to be Americas only professional land forces that could be deployed abroad, well trained but too small for peer on peer war fighting. Someday, we Americans either won't want to deal with it and won't, or will not be able to deal with it, even if we wanted. The U.S. cavalry may one day not ride to the rescue. I, for one, had a real eye-opener looking around at how unprepared everyone was -- Brits, Germans, Italians, Danes, French (yes, the French rejoined!) -- and were happy to have the Americans deal "with it." Things must change if The EU wants to be a player in this more dangerous world.

Yup, fighting wars is always difficult when you don't have colonies to provide you with cannon fodder, money, raw materials and logistics. This is what the British Army would have been like in both the world wars minus the British Indian Army, Australia, Canada and what not.
