This is such a weird debate. We have a lot of people who feel nostalgic about the 90s but fail to see how illegal defence preventing actual team defence and made this into a 1 on 1 post up grind fest. I greatly enjoyed watching the bigs go to work but when I now re-watch those games, there is so little movement and offenses were simplistic. To make it worse: over half the teams shot below 40% from mid range on a staggering 30 attempts per game (per team). I don't hate the 90s, there was great stuff, but also clear shortcomings. The 00s without illegal defence saw the rise and evolution of team defence: especially early help and strong side overloads making it a lot harder to post up (remember, before the 00s you could only double if your man was on the strong side, which the post player can easily see coming). Suddenly the paint is packed, and offense needs to evolve to counter this. The easiest solution is to play faster so the defence isnt set yet and space the floor with 3pointers. THe Run and Gun Suns (who would be last in todays game in pace) are one of the earliest teams to lead the way and finally the inefficient long 2s are starting to come down. A benefit of pace and space is that dunks are also on the rise! People complain we see 60 threes every game at 36% but we came from watching 60 long 2s at 39%, how is that better? And did people not watch money ball? Ofcourse teams are gonna copy stuff that works, it would be stupid not to... And everybody understands the playoffs are what matters so preserving players might be boring and annoying for fans but it's a logical thing to do. The only way to prevent this is eliminate the back-to-backs but the NBA will never do that because of the TV deals.

@maartenvz, well they better hope that fans want to watch that. I want the NBA to clean up the dribbling, there are carries and walks on basically every play, to the point they basically arent playing the same game as years ago. Its easy to create space when you can travel and carry. The bad teams had simplistic offenses in the 90s, btw, the triangle is pretty much going through a resurgence, by stretching it to the 3 point line.

I mean two things can be true. It can be true that it makes sense for everyone to run the same stuff as the league becomes more optimized, but it can also make the viewing experience feel less enjoyable. Like personally I am not tuning into any game that isn't the two teams I give a fuck about and frankly I haven't even been watching full games of those, because there isn't much difference between the games typically since everyone runs the same shit. It's just who hit more threes most games. Teams back in the day shooting long twos WAS better because it was still worth two so while you gained spacing from being good from mid range and could score on teams that packed the paint. It wasn't a numbers game, where it makes sense to jack up 50-60 threes because if you make 10-20 of them its a 30 to 60 point swing. But you dont have to go back to the 90s or 00s, go back just a decade and there was a vast variety between say the rising Warriors, and the Grit and Grind Memphis Grizzlies as an example. I get that it's hard to tell a team to play unoptimally unless they have the absolute perfect personnel for it or terrible personnel to join the copycat league, so I don't know what the fix is, it's not like you can get rid of the three point line. It would be like dragging the game back 30 years, but at the same time teams have gone so far that it's ironically unfun to watch lol. I think the sport might actually just be cooked unless they make another drastic change. I'm not spending multiple hours to watch the best athletes in the world jack up threes, carry on every third dribble and cry and complain anytime there is contact and no whistle call. (Funny enough, I don't blame the players for crying about the calls, it's the refs who only give calls if players try and win an oscar on the court.)

@@theSafetyCarYou whiffed on that one badly. People dont like watching teams hoist 50-60 threes. Actually, people don't mind when good teams do it as part of an organized offence. It's the rest of the simply good, mediocre and bad teams who do it badly and simply chuck tons of shots in hoping tonight is the night the team gets hot. It gives the bad teams a gamblers. And gives horrible basketball. It's like ball control in soccer, it's nice when Barca or Real keep possession obsessively but other less talented teams get to within25yards from opposing goal and end up passing it back and back until they get it to their own GK. The league is in the business of entertaining. That's why they changed so many rules around 2004: so that the Detroit Pistons style defence never again harms their entertainment value. Ironically, this move just pushed the problem to other side.

It's better than running iso with 4 flat but i think the copy and paste actions are boring to see. I think the cure for all these copy cat stuff is for teams to run more off of misses and makes into 3s and layups so that more creative passers can show off. The NBA always has one guy dribble it up instead of trying to get outlet passes over the top like 33% of the time, especially when they have poor shooting lineups. Could you imagine if teams practiced full court pnr and hand offs off an over the top pass to the middle of half court and ran it to get 5 on 3 or 5 on 4 to shoot 3s with a man advantage to rebound. I think if you have a lineup with an athletic advantage, it could work

@@coldicey03 because a throw is a shot in this metaphor. If the NFL started an analytics movement similar to the NBA has with three point shooting they may realize that it's better to just throw hail mary passes half the time instead of playing football. @@bballbreakdown because they dribbled correctly. Look at a guy like Isiah Thomas, he was probably one of the first guys to cross people over quite a bit, and he got called for the carry quite a bit. When its policed, it happens less, now its basically not a rule. But players are lauded for their ballhandling. EVEN AI had that issue with his crossover, now you look at kyrie, and the balls stops as he is handling it quite often. Idk, to me, thats the root of a lot issues. Players arent more skilled now, they are just shooting more. Movement is nice, but its normally the 2man game with the other 3 guys "spacing the floor" ie, standing there. The game just doesnt feel good right now, some of it is on the refs, some of it is on the copycat nature of sports, some of it is on the players being unlikable to an extent. As an avid fan of NBA basketball I do not even have a good idea to fix it. Some of it is how they market players, as opposed to teams. Orlando, a playoff team from a year ago, has 9 nationally televised games. They play good basketball, have good young stars, and basically no one sees it... But we will see ever thing Bronny James, a literal after thought in the NBA, does. Jokic doesnt even get enough exposure, and he is the best player of his generation by a lot. I just do not know who to even watch anymore. I used to love the Pacers Pistons in the early 2000's, the Spurs, DEFENSE mattered, and its not like there was a lack of player movement, Rip was CONSTANTLY moving, Reggie was CONSTANTLY moving, it just seemed like they would defer and take the higher percentage shot at the rim in most cases, and now they will force a contested 3 because that is more efficient, than the backdoor cut, the same action created. Maybe its decision making, maybe everyone is turning into a chucker, but its pretty ugly basketball when you arent watching the better teams in the league.

@@jdapaul1351 horrible rule. are teams supposed to just not take open threes because they need to save some up for later? And what happens when they do run out of threes? Offense is litterally unplayable. Every defender is just gonna stand in the paint. People who have ideas like this show that they dont know at all how basketball works. The goal of every offense is to get open shots. Its not about quantity, but quality. Teams who HIT 3 more threes than their opponents win 70% of the time. Not teams who shoot 3 more threes. The reason why threes are so important is not just because they are the second most valuable shot (after layups) but also because they are the shot that is the farthest away from the area in which you shoot the other kind of valuable shot (aka the paint). That means that threes are the best way to punish teams who want to take away layups (which every team does because they are the most valuable shots) aka teams that play help defense. Every open shot in basketball is created because a defender nneds to help and has to leave his player. Tecnically if team a blays perfect offence and team b perfectly rotates, then the only open shot team a should get should be threes. Effective basketball is not possible without a large ammount of threes, at least at the pro level. End of disscussion. Get over it. You cannot limmit that effectiveness. Please think before you post such a horrible idea.

Here is a few things you can do to make the NBA better 1. Remove the 3 second violation so that traditional centers can actually play in games. 2. Make it so that ball handlers can only move one way in pick n rolls, if they try to spam dribble moves going back and forth behind the screener then it will be considered a moving screen. This will stop all the pick n roll offense that all teams use 3. Get rid of the corner 3 and only have top of the key/wing 3's (or make the corner 3 the same distance as the top of the key/wing 3) to decrease the 3-point scoring volume 4. Enforce the carry and double dribble call more strictly 5. Change the gather step rule so that players can't travel. (it is traveling, the NBA is the only basketball league to my knowledge that has this rule) 6. Return the reset shot clock back to 24 seconds rather than 14 seconds. All of these rules will reward grit and grind defensive teams and reward teams that crash offensive boards and stop all of the high scoring teams that run positionless basketball
