• "If you are in danger ... - Explanation
Things in order:
It is an bylaw offence to activate an emergency release without a valid reason. The clue to what are a valid reasons is in the name emergency, missing your bus/bus stop is not an emergency no matter how great your ego and sense of self importance!
1. I picked all passengers and closed the doors. Then I checked my mirror for anyone running. From here on is the point of no return and opening the doors second time can cause me to lose my license and the company to be taken to court if there is an accident at the offside or the nearside.
2. I checked my mirror and Indicated that I am leaving the bus stop. This is called "point of commitment". Where you are committed to depart the bus stop and must focus on your offside. The car behind the bus stopped, so I was given clear way to depart. The traffic lights were red for some time, so green was coming in few seconds (I know since I drive there multiple times per day).
3. At this point the passenger knocked at the door, which is not allowed in London as it may distract the driver, who must be focused on leaving the bus stop and entering traffic safely. The traffic lights changed 1 second later and I departed.
4. At the next set of traffic lights I stopped at red. The passenger that knocked on the door come to the front door of the bus and used the "emergency door release". This was improper use of the emergency door release button and is actually a major offense. Because I didn't know his intentions I opened all the doors of the bus, to give chance the passengers to escape if this person decides to carry out any sort of attack.
5. After I used the intercom two other passengers made comments, disregarding the actions of that person and attempted to tell me how to do my job. Speaking to the driver of a bus is prohibited unless the bus is stopped safely at a bus stop. So at this point I have 2 more people and 2 minor offences as well as the major one.
6. I made decision to protect my driver license and the company from been taken to court if an accident happened, because of these people distracting me. My decision was to remove the distractions/offenders.
7. Knowing that it's peak hour and the police response for emergency will be 10+ minutes if I am lucky and knowing that the maximum time I can stay with passengers on board on a bus stop is 3 minutes I made a decision. Terminate the bus as none of the offenders will have left the bus in less than 3 minutes, since there is none on board that will speak to them.
Enviro200 MMC bodied Alexander Dennis E20Ds
8. I need the passengers to request another passenger to leave the bus, since I am not allowed to ask people to leave the bus. Since nobody will ask them to leave I terminated the service after informing the TFL of my decision.
You will notice the TFL didn't said a thing or try to negotiate. Driving by the rules is my primary job, negotiating with passengers is not my job. The police is called to enforce the rules if needed. I didn't call the police, since I was actually affected by the speech of the person. I knew he will not escalate. The passengers will leave at some point and I also needed couple of minutes to regain my focus, before I continue driving.
This is a very complicated situation. There are multiple people making demands/pressure on the driver. It's peak hour and it's very busy. 9/10 drivers will keep driving, because they are afraid of losing their job or don't know their rights or the rules properly. However the passengers got that 1/10 drivers on that trip that is not afraid to make difficult decisions within seconds and carry them out to the end. I hope these passengers meet me again. Usually I look them in the eye, waiting for them to say something nasty, but so far they just tap their card and go take a seat.

As an ex bus driver, I understand why he did what he did. If you have a trouble maker that uses the emergency exit button to gain entry, then it stands to reason that the same person is also going to cause more trouble in the future. It's the same that if you have someone banging on your vehicle window, yelling at you to open the door that the person would most likely cause you harm if you actually open the door / window. I've been in that situation a few times in a car and even in the bus I've had people hit the bus with their fist as I was driving past (even displaying the "Not in service" sign that can easily be read 30 metres (93 feet away) because they wanted me to stop for them. I even had a totally plastered (seriously drunk) guy get on without a ticket just to lay down on the seat because he couldn't walk any further (about 100 metres / 330 feet) to the hostel he was staying. I explained quite calmly that he can't stay on / sleep on the bus and needs to get off. He tried using drunk logic which failed miserably. He finally got off without drama. I could tell so many stories about things that happened but I wont. The city council buses around here don't have a full cage either.

As a TFL worker the bus driver is in the right here, you are not allowed to open doors on a busy main road or else there’s a reason for that. But at no point should a passenger open the emergency button door release and enter no matter if you paid or not. And on the plus side the other passengers should really mind there business or either understand that the bus drivers are human beings and not robots so the fact that you got some of these numbers skulls acting as if they know everything should sit down and think who’s actually in the wrong here and clearly the guy that open the emergency door release and entered is 100% in the wrong not the bus driver.

Back in the 1950s when I was a kid all buses were manned by a driver to drive the bus and a conductor to sell tickets and look after the passengers. Then came the front opening doors and the boss's said no need for conductors. So, the service slowed down as the driver had to sell/check tickets this took time with the bus stopped at the bus stop, buses coming behinds would line up but not open the door until the bus was on the stop. Passengers got fed up with these delays to travel after waiting for a bus to come along. Gone were the days of a cheery cockney clippie, wishing you a good morning, making sure everyone had paid, calling out the next stop and helping the elderly, infirm board and alight. Stopping red light boarders with an arm across the entrance hand grips. Now we have buses with hundreds of buttons, push buttons outside the bus so anyone can push them. So many rules that it need a gang of lawyers to sort em out, so many buttons it must be a Distracted Driving offence. It's bad enough driving an HGV in London. I'd hate to drive with a live load and check tickets etc. etc. Live loads are livestock and fluids in a tanker, animal carcasses hung from roof hooks that sway on cornering and braking. Yes, and standing passengers.

I think bus drivers have a lot of ego, and less communication skills - You could have continued driving to a safe stop, called the person over and explained why it’s dangerous to open the doors. It is not fair that one driver can interrupt an entire route because of one person who walked on the bus which is not their fault. Why is a driver doing a job if they feel threatened by a guy who they refused to pick up at a bus stop, he just wanted to terminate the bus and go home early. It is people like this driver who make London a difficult place to live, he has opportunities in the UK that he would not have had if he was back home in his country. People should appreciate that we are all here in the UK as migrants together, we need to work with each other not against each other; wasting each others time and calling the Police wasting public money and taking them away from actual serious crimes. TFL Should make leaflets as to why you should not use the emergency button or an audio announcement to educate and inform; you can’t just expect people to be dangerous and violent because they used an easy accessible button. This is why I don’t take Bus Public Transportation in London, I much rather travel by Tube; this wouldn’t happen on the Underground.

TFL is not government owned or state owned, so even if I work for them I am not a public servant, which I as a bus driver don't, because buses aren't owned by TFL. Bus drivers don't have TFL marking on their uniform, because bus drivers don't work for TFL. Tube drivers do have TFL markings, as they are employed by TFL. Bus drivers are employed by private companies to drive privately owned vehicles. London buses are privately owned and the drivers work for private companies. Everyone want to say "I have right to do stuff", but you also have right to be informed and educated, so you don't speak nonsense in front of everyone else. As you said "some people just have no brains at all". If the above is not clear enough for you as to why Bus Drivers aren't public servants I will guess your lack of education begins from your childhood.

The only thing that you need to know is: This is a bus stopped at a bus stop and it will stay there as long as it's needed. There is nothing anyone can say or do to change that. If you watch the video you can see the events. At the end I am the driver and my decision is final. So you can say the bus stayed there, because I chose to do so, since the bus stop is where the bus is supposed to stop.

These are the 3 things TFL uses to know who was driving that bus. Second: How to report a bus or a driver is displayed just behind the driver cabin. None of the information there says "Ask the driver about his driver number". TFL don't use that information and the passengers have no right to know it and shall never be provided to them as this is breach of data. @@Not-a-Cockroach You certainly do need the drivers approval to board the bus - the bus is under his/her authority and you do as you are told when you are onboard for your safety as its the drivers livelihood you are imacting when you don't. The driver has rules and regulations to follow, in order to ensure the safety of all passengers. This involves the operation of the buses doors when at authorised stopping point. You, as a passenger do not have the right to open the doors to the bus whilst the bus is not at a designated bus stop, in the same way as you do not have the right to open a trains doors as it is about to leave the stations platform. If anything were to happen to a passenger who has opened the doors without the drivers authorisation and the bus moves and puts that passenger under the wheels, who exactly do you think is going to get in trouble - the passenger or the driver? It certainly won't be the passenger. There was a case of a train guard in Liverpool about 10 years ago being imprisoned for a few years after a drunk woman fell against the train as it was departing from the platform - he was found negilgent even though he could do nothing to stop the woman falling against the train (apart from pull the emergency brake)
@DMHS77
@DMHS77 6 ай бұрын
Why? The passenger who boarded the bus didn't respect the rules & the drivers job could be at risk for allowing him to board unsafely like that. Also, the other passengers showed the driver no respect by shouting at him to just drive, so feck them. Driver was completely in the right. The entitlement from some of the commenters here is incredible! Assume the people who make these 'driver should have just got on with it' comments don't work with the public or for an employer who enforces rules to the letter. I wouldn't risk my job for any of them either. Fair play to the driver.

There are many drivers that will allow you to disrespect them and treat them badly. All they want is to get to the end of their day with as few conflicts as possible and go home to their family. I on other hand love conflicts, especially when I know that my word is the final about the bus moving or staying. And because my word is final and I am covered by the rules in place, rules which the police will enforce if I request, I love to ensure that the bad passengers are reminded, that they are passengers on the bus that I am driving. As you can see from my videos, they can scream, shout, swear at me but I don't care. They will get off the bus and if they refuse, then everyone gets off the bus. At the end of the day, no one should be disrespected at their work place. People should actually show respect to the people that provide vital services to the community. I as bus driver am responsible for the lives and safety for thousands of people every day. You however are responsible for nothing close to the scale that I do. So yes, if you disrespect me you are out, because the responsibility I bear is greater than your work place responsibility and I wont allow you to make my day worst and endanger the people that will come in the bus after you. You can be egoist, thinking that "I pay ticket, I am the king", but no you are just a passenger, allowed on this bus, not because of the ticket you pay, but because I am allowing it. If you disrespect me, you are no longer allowed. If you complain about my decision, you are no longer allowed. There are rules, covering my ass, so my employer wont even speak with me about it.

@@gcharada52 PAYING FOR YOUR TICKET IS YOUR INSURANCE IN CASE OF ACCIDENT SO YOUR NAME IS REGISTERED AS PERSON ON BOARD. As I have stated in the video. I am contractor, not TFL employee or public servant. It's stated clearly in the rules I am NOT obligated to provide my identity to passengers. I as driver alone decide if it's safe to continue this journey or not. TFL is aware of the antisocial behavior toward drivers, therefor rules are put in place, where a driver will almost never 99.99999% of the time be hold accountable for refusing to drive for safety reasons. And if the bus stays on a bus stops for 3 minutes and the issue is not resolved, the bus terminates. Terminating the service is actually an obligation and if I don't terminate I can be in trouble. A single passenger speaking to the driver, can be considered distraction, making the journey unsafe. On this trip there were 3+ people who distracting me from driving. Never get in an argument with a bus driver since he got every right to stop driving, the moment you say a word and have obligation to terminate in 3 minutes. A bus driver is the person in charge of the bus. Many drivers don't realize that or are too lazy to care. "Operating the emergency door release is a bylaw offense and can be prosecuted". While you are in charge of a bus and you chose to ignore an offender you are enabling and emboldening that person which makes you a person that doesn't care about society and by proxy you support antisocial behavior. I can see from your comment that you don't have active stance and you don't care much about having safe and progressive society that have social rules. The fact that you mention the words "danger" and "life threatened", means that you don't even realize I at no point used these words or even acted on any such thing. As shown in the video there are multiple passengers committing offences as well as confronting me as a bus driver. I don't just stand up to multiple people at the same time, I do so alone ensuring I don't embolden and enable offenders and antisocial behavior. Enabling and emboldening offenders actually damages society. Me not doing it, while causing discomfort to multiple people is a beneficial in the long run since the offenders will think twice next time. Where if I do as you do, enabling and emboldening them, they will keep the antisocial behavior and the offences without second thoughts.
