• "If you are in danger ... - Explanation
Things in order:
It is an bylaw offence to activate an emergency release without a valid reason. The clue to what are a valid reasons is in the name emergency, missing your bus/bus stop is not an emergency no matter how great your ego and sense of self importance!
1. I picked all passengers and closed the doors. Then I checked my mirror for anyone running. From here on is the point of no return and opening the doors second time can cause me to lose my license and the company to be taken to court if there is an accident at the offside or the nearside.
2. I checked my mirror and Indicated that I am leaving the bus stop. This is called "point of commitment". Where you are committed to depart the bus stop and must focus on your offside. The car behind the bus stopped, so I was given clear way to depart. The traffic lights were red for some time, so green was coming in few seconds (I know since I drive there multiple times per day).
3. At this point the passenger knocked at the door, which is not allowed in London as it may distract the driver, who must be focused on leaving the bus stop and entering traffic safely. The traffic lights changed 1 second later and I departed.
4. At the next set of traffic lights I stopped at red. The passenger that knocked on the door come to the front door of the bus and used the "emergency door release". This was improper use of the emergency door release button and is actually a major offence. Because I didn't know his intentions I opened all the doors of the bus, to give chance the passengers to escape if this person decides to carry out any sort of attack.
5. After I used the intercom two other passengers made comments, disregarding the actions of that person and attempted to tell me how to do my job. Speaking to the driver of a bus is prohibited unless the bus is stopped safely at a bus stop. So at this point I have 2 more people and 2 minor offences as well as the major one.
6. I made decision to protect my driver license and the company from been taken to court if an accident happened, because of these people distracting me. My decision was to remove the distractions/offenders.
7. Knowing that it's peak hour and the police response for emergency will be 10+ minutes if I am lucky and knowing that the maximum time I can stay with passengers on board on a bus stop is 3 minutes I made a decision. Terminate the bus as none of the offenders will have left the bus in less than 3 minutes, since there is none on board that will speak to them.
8. I need the passengers to request another passenger to leave the bus, since I am not allowed to ask people to leave the bus. Since nobody will ask them to leave I terminated the service after informing the TFL of my decision.
You will notice the TFL didn't said a thing or try to negotiate. Driving by the rules is my primary job, negotiating with passengers is not my job. The police is called to enforce the rules if needed. I didn't call the police, since I was actually affected by the speech of the person. I knew he will not escalate. The passengers will leave at some point and I also needed couple of minutes to regain my focus, before I continue driving.
This is a very complicated situation. There are multiple people making demands/pressure on the driver. It's peak hour and it's very busy. 9/10 drivers will keep driving, because they are afraid of losing their job or don't know their rights or the rules properly. However the passengers got that 1/10 drivers on that trip that is not afraid to make difficult decisions within seconds and carry them out to the end. I hope these passengers meet me again. Usually I look them in the eye, waiting for them to say something nasty, but so far they just tap their card and go take a seat.
DO NOT TRY TO IMITATE WHAT I DO AS YOU MAY BE IN DANGER. I AM TRAINED IN ASSESSING AND HANDLING THREATS IN THE PUBLIC.

I'm an ex bus/coach driver. I kicked people off for much less. That man is unstable and if he can use the emergency button to enter at traffic lights then who knows what rules he'll break on board. Don't let these people bully you on your vehicle. I think your only mistake was trying to reason with that idiot at the end. I'd tell him to get out and if he doesn't, call the police on him too for trespassing. The vehicle is now out of service, you are trespassing private property. Don't argue with anyone just be kind and apologise to paying passengers, it's not their fault...but it's not yours either. The police can do the arguing and you will still get paid.

Buses don't discriminate, they only terminate. Passengers have to only tap and take a seat. Mouthing and cussing at the driver and preventing him from doing his job is an offense and will not be tolerated by me. Buses need to have standards and the driver is the person responsible to uphold these standards. Also all the new London buses, no longer open doors upon emergency door release button press. However the bus is immobilized and disabled, until restarted which means it is not moving anywhere. I appreciate, you realize my job is to ensure the safety of the company property and it's passengers when in service. I am not there to please them. Stay safe.

@layton.the.pilot.2024 Minors don't bear full responsibility for their actions. It is discouraged to have any sort of interactions with minors on London buses. Even if I see minors attack someone or break the bus I wont touch them. I will only call the police that a person is attacked by minors. If they commit a crime, because they are minors I wont touch them. You can sleep on my bus, I don't care. You can travel without a ticket, I don't care. Obviously you cannot smoke, since I will stop the bus and call the police. If you are a grown up however and you provoke me I will treat you as an adult. Enjoy it while you are young, after this you will have to own the shit you do.

Ah this sucks. But thanks, London buses are great and the drivers are a big part of that. I guess I live in a quite nice part of town but I have a few times seen people get annoyed in situations where the bus is full or whatever - but some people are just angry people I guess. I've had many times where a driver has waited for me, which is always appreciated but never expected - after all I'm only one person and holding up a full bus when there is another one not too far behind could be seen as a bit selfish.

This is the problem in UK - open doors from outside/inside with emergency button seems to be far too easy compared to Europe. In Poland eg. emergency doors valves are sealed, so this prevents people and bored kids to do so.
@itsrenderman
@itsrenderman 9 ай бұрын
That is true, but it also elevates risk during emergency situations if the door releases are not easily accessible and readily available. If there is a fire, the driver becomes incapacitated, the cab controls no longer function, emergency crews need easy and quick access to a vehicle - in any of these scenarios and more passengers should have a simple way of opening the doors in an emergency. While this does make it possible for people to abuse the emergency functions, you could say the same about many other things - fire alarms, fire escape doors, emergency stop on trains, and so on.

@@itsrenderman By "sealed" I think he means the kind of seal that you tear or break in an emergency. In my city, each door on the train has a clearly marked emergency handle inside a box with a sheet of plastic over the front. In an emergency, you tear the plastic and pull the handle. The fact that you heave to break a seal to use the handle discourages people from using it casually.

As a bus driver in London, I personally wouldn’t have terminated the whole service but I don’t think many of you understand how unsafe this is or why the driver is annoyed. He had already indicated right and told traffic he was leaving the bus stop. You can’t open the doors after this point. For the passenger to then walk up to the bus at the traffic light and press the emergency button to open the doors and enter the bus was 100% wrong. I would’ve stopped at the next bus stop and told the passenger to exit the bus and wouldn’t have moved the bus until he left.

You cant stay more than 3 minutes on the bus stop without terminating. The moment the passenger spoke to me at the traffic light I knew how this will end up. Thats why I terminated. The moment the passengers spoke to me on the traffic light they became an liability as well. Also I dont negotiate in situations when I know the end result if the police is called. Its useless to change anything or negotiate when you know the end result already.

The rule is "If you have closed the doors and your indicator is ON for safety reasons, you must not open them again." That is, because you may have moved the bus too far away from the curb for safe boarding. The hand break may not be engaged and a person can fall under the front wheel if the bus moves. There are multiple safety systems in place to make boarding the bus safe, but they are in place only during specific circumstances. Not to mention that a bus that can't make his mind if he is leaving the bus stop or staying there will cause BIG discomfort to other road users. The person that knocked on the front door, as I was departing broke a minor rule by knocking on the door. When he opened the front door from outside by operating the emergency door release, and boarded the bus without the driver's consent and yes, to board the bus you need the driver's consent. The rule is something like "When you stop at the bus stop, open the doors only after you have looked at the people outside and you have decided, they are safe to be on the bus." It's important to say, that we as drivers aren't allowed to ask people to leave the bus, we must call the police. However we can refuse to drive, this is what I did. The moment he opened the door, the correct action was to request immediate police response, stop at the next bus stop and inform the passengers that we are waiting for the police to arrive. This will prevent escalation on the situation. However it was peak hour, so the police arrival will have been long after he was gone from the bus, and that will waste tax payer money and the police officers, have more important things to do, than deal with disrespectful people. However when a passenger started shouting at me, the first time I immobilized the bus, I realized that there is now a second person, that is disrespectful towards me and my judgement as a driver. If they aren't okay with my decisions as a driver, they have no place on the bus that I am driving. So I decided to empty the whole bus, because I don't want to have people that are disrespectful and to show them, that if I as driver, make a request that is reasonable, it will be done or the bus wont move (especially when safety is concerned). I handled the situation poorly, but the safety of the passengers is my primary concern. End of the day, the guy with the big mouth that was yapping, accomplished nothing, the guy that boarded bus accomplished nothing, and the other one that was telling me to get him home, also accomplished nothing. All of this, because they decided to ignore my request and start arguing with the person that is driving (me). EDIT: Also Red Busses aren't TFL buses and the drivers are contractors, they don't work for TFL. The people that pay for tickets, think, they pay the salary of the driver and own the bus. They own nothing and don't pay the driver's salary. They are allowed on the bus, not because they pay, but because the driver allowed them to be there. The TFL however can fine them if they are found to have no valid ticket, since TFL rules apply to buses as well as the company owning them, having another set of rules. It's very complicated system.

For all the people who don't understand the response: This video shows a single instance of this happening. Now imagine that this is your job, and that you have to deal with obnoxious people who think the world revolves around them instead of the person getting them safe to where they need to go the whole day long, and think that this is the 5th time something like this happens. You decided to let it go 4 times, but at the 5th time you are done with doing that. It's the same with some people boarding a bus without a ticket and it being obvious they are just trying the driver out to see if he will carry them. A bus driver might ignore it a couple of times, no matter how much it is dishonest to the rest of the people who do pay, but then another one on their shift tries the same stuff, and the driver is done with it and tells them to buy a ticket or leave the bus. In my area, when there is someone who does this with the obvious intent of simply not wanting to pay, it can happen that upon someone not making a fuss and leaving the bus, but the driver noticing that they tried this before, informing all other drivers what bus stop it is that they have to watch out for "because there's someone without a ticket there trying to get on." And if you still don't get it. Imagine if some colleague of you at the work that you do keeps pulling the fire-alarm during the day. First time you might feel like you normally feel around a false-alarm situation, second time might also not cause much of a stir, but when it keeps happening during your shift, you are getting pretty riled up and probably would want to at least mention something to said colleague. But if the rules do not allow such a thing because it should come from the people higher up that you can't reach easily, what would you do? Knowing it'll lead to a new evacuation at some point during the day? Stay at home at some point? Yes? Ok. Now understand the perspective of the bus driver for terminating the service? By the way, when I once missed a bus I needed to have and knew the route, I decided to run my ass off between several stops knowing that the U-shaped part of the route that I was cutting off straight through towards one of the next stops would hopefully save me enough time (which it did). Missed the bus? Wait for the next one or just advance to the next one walking... it's not that difficult, and for once I am seeing a reasonably generous area for pedestrians.

London is the the biggest city in the UK. As such everything is multiplied by more than 4. I was driving in areas where religious disputes were happening as well as drug gangs were fighting with knives. So what if you're the driver, what does that make you, a king? Nope. You should also take care of the passengers, besides the "threat" you're scared of just because he didn't enter at the bus stop, already left the bus, you should have let the others on board stay on board, you didn't need to kick em out because of 1 person because they didn't do anything. I think bus drivers have a lot of ego, and less communication skills - You could have continued driving to a safe stop, called the person over and explained why it’s dangerous to open the doors. It is not fair that one driver can interrupt an entire route because of one person who walked on the bus which is not their fault. Why is a driver doing a job if they feel threatened by a guy who they refused to pick up at a bus stop, he just wanted to terminate the bus and go home early. It is people like this driver who make London a difficult place to live, he has opportunities in the UK that he would not have had if he was back home in his country. People should appreciate that we are all here in the UK as migrants together, we need to work with each other not against each other; wasting each others time and calling the Police wasting public money and taking them away from actual serious crimes. TFL Should make leaflets as to why you should not use the emergency button or an audio announcement to educate and inform; you can’t just expect people to be dangerous and violent because they used an easy accessible button. This is why I don’t take Bus Public Transportation in London, I much rather travel by Tube; this wouldn’t happen on the Underground.

I know what you did. It was the right thing, but you shouldn't emergency park in the middle of a traffic light junction. As the junction is one way, you are blocking other vehicles from continuing their journey. The time was 18:00, therefore people need to get home. I don't think it's the right sense in straight up parking in the middle of the road, where people are rushing to get home. Maybe you could emergency park at the next bus stop. I don't know. The bus might not have been able to move immediately anyway because the emergency button on the outside was pressed. Modern Wright buses tend to not like it if you take off the parking brake half a second too soon after the doors have closed so I wouldn't be surprised if ADL had something that upset the bus if the door was opened with the external emergency button when "D" was selected (parking brake was on by the looks of it), I don't have much experience with newer ADL but I have been told there are more weird safety features than the older Trident chassis. I have always preferred B7R to B11R so I probably wouldn't like to work with the "MMC" range.

Which is in the highway code that you should not do so. You take the piss with your driving. And have you got permission to ware that camera? @@JM-or3ze sort yourself out. Drivers do not have time to wait for people, people wait for the bus, not the other way round.... TFL give 30 seconds per stop. The doors were open for more than 30 seconds. A late driver gets booked, and the operator fined/penalised for being late. Lets be real, the bus behind was probably no more than 10 minutes. And if it was any longer, it's a low frequency service meaning the times are scheduled and the guy should've been at the stop before the scheduled time. Don't like the timings? Contact TFL Did you see the guy running in the mirror? Watch the video and tell me you saw the guy running because I didn't. I would've drove off then too after everyone at the stop boarded. Did the guy in the video "drive off laughing"? I didn't hear a laugh?? You're making up rubbish to excuse the dangerous actions. Do you know using the emergency release buttons halts the bus and prevents it moving? Imagine the bus was about to pull away for the green light, the bus is then halted and gets rear ended or worse. Obviously, you made the right decision and these people suck talking to you like that, but as a small possible improvement for you, your communication wasn't helping either. You used technical terms and gave a rather exact explanation of why you stopped. The people entering the bus for example, just tell them the bus isn't going because of an emergency. Simplify your language, most people are morons or have no idea about your job. Think of it like talking to 5 year olds.

It is unfair for the paying passengers to have to find another way home or wait until another bus comes doing the route. But I do understand why you would want him off the bus because God knows what that guy is willing to do. I probably would not have completely terminated in the middle of the road, though, because it could cause issues. So I would have just kept on going until the next stop and then terminated like you did in the end.
