this reminded me of the quote “everybody wants to save the world but nobody wants to help mom do the dishes” it would be great if we could all help everyone in the world but it’s very unrealistic. instead like simone said we should focus on our family, communities and expand further in future. love this vid as always!!!

Omg so true I always take on friends that are drowning, help or want to gain something but dont really help me in return. I will stop that because the base of the relationship is due to they wanted something from me.

Feeling guilt is something i dealt with as a medical student when i started visiting the hospital and dealing with patients. However, over time i learned to dissociate and turn that feeling into im glad im healthy and pray for them that it becomes less painful. But i’m still empathetic and i dont wanna lose that cuz i do see some of my mentors literally having no sense of empathy for the patients their dealing with.

This is so true. I had this friend of mine which I got crush on and the friendship turned into situationship, okay but whenever I talk to him I immediately start to feel so low, as if I've worked for like 18 hours, at start I was not paying attention to it but I now I really have to.. I can't let him steal my precious energy. I will put myself first, save my energy and fill in my cup first. Thanks so much Simone. I am so lucky to found you, you just don't know how grateful I am. This video spoke to me because I have let go of wanting to "save" my brother like my mom would always ask me to, I would also always say "I will be able to help people unless it involves sacrificing myself" and I have lived by that. I got called selfish but I am taking it as a compliment at this point. Thank you for this wonderful video.

Same with friends and family, I have a lot of emotional vampires in my life, people with relationship problems, hate their jobs etc. i had to switch off my guilt after a while. Because they didn’t want to be saved, and no one was realising just how much I was pouring into everyone else, how much everyone was taking - but no one was filling my cup and I was too exhausted and depressed to pour into my own cup too. They look down on me for being “savage” and ending relationships and friendships and even changing jobs - but it’s because I need to, to make my life better. They would rather wallow, and complain about their relationships and life and jobs - and just never change. I also had to stop complaining myself, and cut my own shit, so that I could chase my own dreams and create a good life. I’ve ended up attracting much better people too, who wanted better for their life and who were more focussed on positive things.

This is so true. I’m realizing this as a teenager but it’s very sad when people will be so used to having help from people who have severe empathy. I remember I would be stressed out because people would call me at 1 o clock in the morning venting about something or telling me they want to end it all. It got to a point where I got so panicked I would have breakdowns. Eventually I end up blocking people that turn friendship into “free therapy” and nothing else.

Damn this came to my feed at such a right time. I have been working through my goals and it becomes debilitating because people usually dump their problems towards me because that used to make me feel self fulfilled because I was able to save someone by helping them with their problems. Now I'm kinda slowly realizing, no one helped me be better, I helped myself and it becomes frustrating when someone comes to me but wants my empathy not solutions because as someone who now prioritized making a solution first irregardless of how I felt. It felt almost suffocating when they would just ask and drain my empathy and not listen to actual solutions. Some people don't actually want solutions they just want you to stay in a miserable state with them as company and it's true that if I wanna get ahead in life, I'd really have to put me first and be selfish.

After hearing what you mentioned in the video I was reminded of a person in my life who has a lot of medical obstacles (mainly insomnia among other things.) As a result they oftentimes are SUUUPPEEERRR negative which is understandable given their circumstances, but at the same time they’re not trying to look at the positive side of things whatsoever. For example, if I have a good night’s rest and I mention that I’m proud of myself and I feel good, instead of being happy for me this person will act like even getting sleep at all is good enough and how they wished they could even have an hour or two of rest, which always leaves me feeling guilty. Another example is that I always take the time to write this person long, original motivational messages that I carefully thought about so as to help them feel more positive about things. Whenever I do this, they respond like everything I said is pointless because it’s not going to cure them. I always feel guilty after these conversations, wishing I could do more to help them. But like you said, some people don’t want to be helped and you can push the life raft over and they’d rather push it away and leave themselves to drown because it garners more attention and climbing up on the life raft takes effort that they’re not willing to put forth for themselves. Everyone is dealing with their own issues and overcoming their own struggles, it’s not up to us to shift their negative mindsets to positive ones especially when they ignore the genuine advice we have offered. It really is a sigh of relief to be able to tell myself that I’ve already done what I could and that these are not my problems.

I had enough of being the one who always help and get nothing in return, it sucks man, good thing I just got rid of people who were like that, guys be careful when you help out people, in my experience I got guilt tripped into doing things for them, thankfully I have distanced myself from such people. I have literally been thinking about this for a few days now, i need to be a little selfish to be able to function properly. I've always put other's needs above mine And, my mom recently had an accident and it's been four months since she has severe pain in her leg and it's been hard for her and for me as well since i have to pick up some of the work load and also caring for someone for this long is hard and takes a mental toll on you Anyway, I really needed this right now, thankyou so much (I've been saying that for a few videos now but i really mean it)

So agree about the friends drowning. I did that too. And I ended up with a hanger-on for 6 years and she never has a positive thing to say. I’ve given her multiple life rafts and she won’t get it. It’s always negativity, and it’s sad because she has been through trauma - but so have I! Objectively a lot more than her, which I know it’s not a competition, but I’ve poured tens of thousands of dollars, committed my life to getting through my trauma. She just wants to wallow.

I'm a very highly empathetic person and now I'm trying to set boundaries and if u want I would like to see a video talking about boundaries (especially 4 empaths) because I think that they really matters and can save u from uncomfortable situations. Being selfish is important and when we can feel guilt about it we have to remind ourselves that we have the power to decide how we can feel even if can not be always easy. True if u keep being sad about someone u will end up being the one others will become sad looking at u. If u really wanna help 1 person help YOURSELF. That 1 is u or at most ur family. Whether u know it or not everyone is playing victim role game, emotional games, making u feel that U should be helping them coz u blessed than them. So dont fall into others games and focus on urself. (This advice is coming from my own multiple experience 😓)

I'd like to add my story of why am I here watching this video. I got issues with to be or not to be selfish. There it is: WORK. I've had 2 jobs during dis year: tutor & dance trainer. Both need so much energy, dedication, preparations and attention to each student so I couldn't carry on that way anymore, I started realising that it leads to burnouts and even hate to what I used to love doing once. So the decision came - to quit something. On one hand It was hard but logically at some point. From other side: parents & kids were RLY upset. They were trying to stop me, to change my mind. And I was like a Selfish person refusing them... It's what I'm going through now. I should understand if it is right for Me - it is GOOD. Even though it might appear bad for someone, but those are feeling and they are okay. I do not obey them all my Life. I have my own too, my own career changes, priorities. And yes I'm thinking of my wellbeing, benefit. If it's Bad, sorry. I have to admit - I am selfish...

When I started going to my local high school, I was a new kid bc I went to catholic school from k-8. There was this one girl who I befriended bc both she and I didn’t have many friends, and every time I told ppl that I was friends with this girl they would scoff and ask me why I’d ever give her the time of day. I thought ppl were just being mean to her, so I tried my best to be a good friend to her but I eventually realized that no one liked her bc she was a complete b-h and that I should just let her be by herself. I’m not saying don’t reach out to ppl who are in need of a friend, but I am saying that some ppl are lonely for a reason and they don’t deserve your time and energy.
